A few weeks ago I paid $18 for two N64 replacement analog sticks. They arrived today:

I had also bought 2 N64 controllers at $2 each at my local Video Game store a few weeks ago. The store sold the controllers for so cheap because the analog sticks were ruined and the controllers were incredibly filthy.
Today I took both controllers apart and cleaned them inside and out. I then put the controllers back together, but with a new analog stick in them.
So, my haul today is a pair of clean, shiny, and like new controllers:

Nice, are those sticks as responsive as the originals?

Besides though, I was quite surprised when I first found out people on the Internet didn't like the N64 controller. I always thought the originals were fine.
Same here, but that analog stick is pure trash. Quite frankly, I wouldn't even have bought the replacement analog sticks you bought.
This is my recommendation if you find a Nintendo 64 controller with a severely mangled analog stick or if one of your own personal controllers has a crappy analog stick:
1. Get this POT-based replacement analog stick:

2. Purchase an AtMega8 or AtTiny24 and build a simple programmer for it that plugs into the Parallel port
3. Program either chip with code from Micro of the NFG forums (I will link to that later)
4. Throw out the original microcontroller in the analog stick (it's worthless junk that causes lag and skipping of steps) and solder in your Atmel chip.
This should be considerably more durable than any of those replacement sticks that look just like Nintendo's original analog stick.

Tell me where you can purchase a POT-based Nintendo 64 analog stick with that fix done on them. I have yet to find the POT-based sticks with a mod already pre-installed on them, and I'm not about to recommend any analog stick that looks like Nintendo's original crappy design.

Take note of the completely different stick design. There's no "pit" like the original N64 stick. That replacement looks like a Gamecube stick and operates the same way.
Those modules are also sealed shut, I haven't tried to open one.

If you're an N64 collector, than good luck finding a CIB copy of this game. You'll need it.
You will need something to crush the seams in a little bit as they're held together by glue. Those sticks NEED to get their microcontroller replaced; they've got a microcontroller in them that serves as an ADC to make the analog stick compatible with the Nintendo 64 controller, and said microcontroller is crap. This is why I insist on people replacing the stock microcontroller by an AtMega8 or AtTiny24; the stock microcontroller has noticeable lag and skips steps. Don't believe me? Watch this video:Quote:
