I noticed something funny while playing around with the game. At the beginning of the Marble Zone Act 1, if you look closely at the shrine in the background, the 2 lions picture seems to form a Mario Bros-like face.
I don't know why but at first, I wasn't seing two lions, but just a face. It took me a couple of seconds to distinguish the 2 lions.
Sorry if It was already discussed before or if it's old news.

ignoring the lions tails, the image looks like mario when he's in the frog suit.

I never knew those were two lions.
Possibly just a stupid coincidence, but it does make you think. If there's an artist that worked Sonic 1 that hasn't been interviewed yet we should ask this.
It wouldnt suprise me if it is not a coincidence, It's not the first time Sega have put Mario content in there games. Befor Alex Kidd in Shinobi World was released it wasnt actually an Alex Kidd game, it went under the name Shinobi Kid.

The name was changed in the released version from Mari-oh to Kabuto.
For those of you who have not played this game the guy fires balls at you that bounce much the same as Mario does when he eats a flower. After you have hit him 3 times he shrinks down to a little guy (like mario does) and fires smaller balls.
The 2 lions in sonic is a pretty strange thing for them to do, perhaps it was just the artists little tribute to Mario? perhaps a pissed off worker added it one day? For example there are all kinds of random things in Disney films that have been put in by artists.
For Sonic 1, maybe it's just pure coincidence too. Probably.
Reminds me of that letter in Gamepro where some kid thought Nintendo was poking fun at Sega with the black hedgehog things in "Super Mario 2".
Thankfully they corrected this fool by pointing out that SMB2 was released years before Sonic ever arrived.
