Dreamcast doesn't fit in...?

I don't know what it is, I'm a die hard Sega fanboy, but it just seems like my Dreamcast never fit into my collection.

It gets the least play of all my systems, and it amounts to like never. I adore my Genesis and have played it non-stop since '89, just about the same with my Sega CD and Sega Saturn.

For some reason, though I love some of the games, I just have never felt the Dreamcast belonged. Does anybody else feel the same?

Thinking about selling my very meager collection and two dreamcasts (always have a backup ;) )

Yeah... I don't have a Dreamcast anymore either. It was great to play Virtua Tennis and Ikaruga, but it always felt more like a gimmick than a console. Whereas my Genesis is like my best friend/roommate, the Dreamcast is like the guy who rents the basement. It just pays the rent on time.

I agree and I don't. I love my dreamcast, but I understand your point. Maybe it's because it was the last Sega console I bought? I don't count my genesis that I bought about 5 weeks ago because I've always been around a genny at my cousin's house.

Well that's because you guys aren't using it to it's full potential! There's so many great games that system has including some cool homebrew ones and it has the ability to emulate other systems as well. Can you do that on a Genesis or Saturn?

The Dreamcast is more like a Nintendo console: the controller is tosh, it is of light colour and has many games for children.

DC has the best controller !!!

my DC sits right next to my MD2, ready to be used. It gets less attention than my MD2 though, but lot more the SMS2 I have.

As far as 'not fitting in' or 'doesn't feel like Sega', can anyone actually formulate a coherent reason for this emotion? People say it all the time but can't ever back it up. Maybe it's because you don't have childhood nostalgia attached to the system because you weren't an unjaded, uncynical little kid when it came out.

Dreamcast is an awesome system, especially when it came out in comparison to the blocky playstation and blurry n64. Theres plenty of great sega games for it. I think what makes people have less respect for the DC is the fact a lot of the games were ported to or had sequels on later systems.

People who say they don't like the dreamcast are probably trying to cover up their guilt for not buying one when they were new and therefore letting sega go broke, just so they could save up for a PS2 and fabulous games like Fantavision!

Dude, first of all, I didn't say this as a rant of hate against the DC. It's just my agreement to the statement that it doesn't fit in as a Sega console, mmkay?

The DC controller has been discussed before, and I hate it. The D-pad hurts my thumb, those clickety-buttons on the right and left back are awful, it is shaped for midgets, looks ugly, has pointless slots for vibrator-crap and memory card which just makes it heavier and etc.!

More than Saturn and Genesis are too many for me. If I bought the system, it would annoy me to skim through all the children games when searching for the non-children games - it even does when I buy Genesis games!

DC is the least played SEGA system I have, but that is because there are very few games I have/want to play on it.

Pretty much it's "Power Stone 2".

I never said it isn't a Sega console. I just said it felt more like a Nintendo console, and I gave my reasons. I also never said the console is tosh. What the hell is there to argue about?

While I do love the Dreamcast it does seem a bit different then the other Sega system to me. First off its white with colorful something not seen on a Sega System outside of Japan. Secondly no diagonals (grr), but what really stood out in my mind is that how popular it was at first. I know it died against the Ps2 but the buzz was huge at least where I lived. Kids waited in line for the Dreamcast. All the normal "I hate Sega Nintendo/Sony" is better talke vanished for a few months. Tony Hawk, Resident Evil, Crazy Taxi, Jet Grind Radio, SOnic all were huge. At the time it felt like Sega was really going to do ok for a change. It was like the second coming. Of course in hindsight it is easy to dismiss this. If there were not kids waiting for lines for the Dreamcast where you live and no one cared I believe you but in this town it was a big deal. That is what always sticks out in my mind.

You make a good points, the cartridge slot comment was a joke, more of a shot at the Saturn really. Yes by the time the Dreamcast came out I was a bitter angry teenager, who still felt burned after such meager support of the Saturn by Sega. That doesn't mean I have never given the damn thing a chance and at the same time I do really like Sega's systems. I still think the Dreamcast was far beyond anything that came out at the time and I'm honestly not slamming the system for what it can do. I truly think the damn thing can go head to head with anything thats out now.

BUT, that doesn't mean that the sort of games that are on the system really appeal to me. I DON'T mean childish "nintendo" type games, because I kinda like those type of games. I LOVE the Dreamcast controller and it is the best of its Generation.

For one thing, I do like the Sonic games but it really did it for me when Sonic started talking...call me a bitch...but it ruined it for me. I might add I never watched the show as a kid either.

Okay, its a fairly small library, and I do like the Sonics, Karous, RE 2, Toy Commander, Rayman etc. But all these games fall flat somehow and it just might be that the 3-D aspect in some of the games is really annoying. It might just be that I played these games to death and its going to take about 5 years before I start getting back into them. It seems heavily weighed down by fighters, Shenmue is TEDIOUS, period. Ecco sucks. RE games are great, so are the Sonic Games but none of them really pull me in to keep my attention. Rayman 2 has its moments but nothing special, and the fighters are all real disappointments to me. Marvel v. Capcom 1 was the biggest disappointment, though I've been told its worth something nowadays.


The 3-D Saturn Sonic games REALLY excited me...Sonic R blew me away, so did Sonic Jam. I also, unlike most people, really really loved those games. However, by the time the Dreamcast came out I guess I was just expecting what came. It wasn't so special anymore to see something in 3-D, the gimmick had worn thin. Especially when my favorite games on the Saturn/Genesis/SCD are either 2-D platform games, 2-D Shmups, and hack/slash games. The 3-D was occasional and it was a treat. By Dreamcast era 3-D was rammed down peoples throat.

Now, this might be good, people love 3-D games and they work on so many more levels. For some people, that's fantastic and more power to 'em. I love 2-D games with a peppering of 3-D. I never liked how sloppy 3-D control often seemed, especially on consoles, and the new dynamic has a tendency to really make games far more tedious. I'm NOT ATTACKING people who like 3-D/Dreamcast BUT damnit these games are nothing special to me and don't I have a right to say these things are nothing special?! Maybe I don't know what it is exactly BUT I DON'T love the Dreamcast and if I'm a traitor then so be it. But, its my damn opinion, I'll hold it if I so please and I don't need any other reason than that.

This isn't a p.H.D dissertation, the only way I need to backup my argument is say I don't like the damn games, I don't...argument so defended.

Yea it definitely gets the least amount of play out of all my systems. I bleed Sega, just not the Dreamcast. I know it has great games and a lot to offer its just I really haven't gotten into it. Don't crucify me or anything its just not my thing.

In fact if I decide to pick up one of those MGS4 PS3's when they come out then 1 console gonna have to leave the console room. It sure as hell won't be my genny, or my Xbox, OR my Saturn so DC is probably gonna get the ax soon :/

I might also add Genesis knight, that I freaking grew up with the Genesis (got it xmas of '89)-Saturn. Those were prime gaming days. The Dreamcast came out when I was getting into High School. I was still renting Genesis games up to the day the damn things left the store in '97-98. Its hard to transition from the Saturn to the Dreamcast because the Dreamcast was/is so different. Saturn was 1995...Dreamcast was 1999. A lot changed in gaming...but I 'spose I just didn't want it to.

Maybe the quality DC games don't yet seem timeless because they aren't really that old yet. I distinctly remember being enthralled by Sonic Adventure and wishing the game was longer than it was (and it was a pretty long game to start with). Personally, I really do consider it timeless, even moreso than the original 2D games because it gave Sonic a persona so much more completely.

Also, you will ALWAYS have a greater affection, I think, for the console or consoles which were your first(s). I don't play my Genesis as much as my Dreamcast or PS2, but it's still my favorite because it was my first and I had the time then to be a very avid gamer (I'm lucky if I can sit down to play more than once or twice a week now).

And even if one console or another doesn't seem to fit with the others, that's a GOOD thing because it mean you'll have a wider variety of choices when you sit down to play!

I would also suggest getting a copy of a Game Shark CDX or something similar and playing a little Headhunter or Shenmue II. As with the Saturn there are a number of imports and/or less easily located games that will only increase your appreciation for the console. Personally, I'm still looking for a copy of Stupid Invaders and have yet to try either of the Power Stone games.

One thing that was different by the Dreamcast era is that Sega was no longer the bad boy alternative to the goodie-two-shoes Nintendo machines. The playing field was more even and others (Sony) had really stolen the spotlight to a great extent. At this time, the Dreamcast, though a fantastic piece of hardware with really good games available, was just another seemingly similar choice with no clear distinction between it and a machine with a Sony or Nintendo nameplate. It is just a dirty rotten shame it didn't live longer so the game offerings could have continued to further define the console and its personality more fully.

Good point, I think it goes back to a phrase someone said on these boards ages ago, something like "Your favorite time was whenever you were 6," or something to that extent. Makes sense though, as I always look back with fond memories of the early 90's. Pogs, my Genesis, pool boards, the Simpsons when they were funny, badass action films, all that jazz. I think thats unique to people of every generation, hence all the "back in my day" sayings.

The Dreamcast is great, period. I fell in love the very first time I played Japanese Sonic Adventure at Babbages months before it came out in America. The only reason I got a PS2 instead was because I had a bunch of PSX games and no PSX because I played them on Connectix Virtual Game Station (think Bleem! minus graphic enhancements) and because DVDs were just becoming popular and I was able to talk my parents into it based on the fact we needed a DVD player for that room. In the end I guess it worked out because I bought a great condition dreamcast and currently have about 15 *good* games that cost me about $100 altogether including a total of 4 memory cards and 2 controllers. Also, I always like to wait and see which system really shines and which one kind of flops. I really wish I would have waited with the Wii, its garbage. I think Wii should diaf and Sega should bring back the Dreamcast. Then good times would be had by all.

On the other hand, I do see what some people mean by "not feeling like Sega." To me, the Dreamcast feels like what the N64 would've been if Nintendo was smart enough to use CDs instead of stone tablets for game storage (stone tablet reference to emphasize how outdated and inadequate cartridges were at the time). I think Sony kind of stole the "more adult" torch from Sega sometime around the PSX. Then again, Sega was always known for having games with lots of fast action, and the Dreamcast certainly delivered on that front. No matter how you slice it, I love my Dreamcast, but as dumb as it sounds, I think I agree that black would've been a better color choice since they've been making black systems since the 80's.

Although not necessarily a bad game, Sonic Adventure was decidedly un-Sonic, un-Sega, and might as well have been designed by Rare. And that game kind of encapsulates the feel of the system. Up to Dreamcast, Sega had always been king of action games, with a few great RPGs and arcade racers for good measure. With Dreamcast, they didn't know what they wanted to be. The Sega of old would never have made a game like Sega GT.

I feel no guilt, I was in my PC game phase from 1995 to 2003. I also don't feel guilt because the games made for the DC never appealed to me like those for the Saturn (imports) and Genesis did.

I base my general feelings of a systems worth based upon its library of games and the number of which appeal to me. I have 6 for the Dreamcast which is really nothing compared to the 52 games I have for the Genesis/MD.

I'm not a collector, I only own games I like or that serve some technical testing value (Hello Budokan!).

The Dreamcast is the closest im getting to a arcade cabinet so DC rules.

Save them pennies and get a Neo Geo. ;)

Sonic Adventure is as much Sonic to me like the rest (if you leave Knuckles stages out... they're not very fun IMO)

could it just be you guys prefer the 16bit/32bit 2D or software rendered 3D feel over the "modern" hardware driven 3D world of today?? I think the DC is the best thing Sega ever did other than the controller itself.

I couldn't disagree more, I think Sonic Adventure is the culmination of everything Sonic was trying to be in the 16-bit era. The exploration areas add depth and meaning to the action stages and the action stages stay very true to the 16-bit counterparts. Sure it doesn't make total sense that Sonic is running around amongst normal humans, but thats just Japan for you, that stuff is normal in their culture. Personally I think Sonic Adventure is the second best sonic game behind Sonic 2.

yeah, but Awesome Possum was made by Tengen, not Sega. But then again, that's just another point that proves having games like 102 Dalmations doesn't mean its a kiddie system, it means developers felt like making a kiddie game for a quality system. Does Big Bird Learns to Spell for PC make a PC a child's toy? hardly. And, need I remind you, Barney had a game for Genesis, and Barney is a god awful abomination to mankind.

lol true but the black ones (at least over here in Canada) all say "SEGA Sports" on them! I think it looks great in white and grey but yes it does stand out from every other major Sega system in NA. I once sold a Saturn to a dude in town and he had a clear pink "Hello Kitty" DC that was pure JDM!

I don't think this is my problem, I learned to love (some) "modern" games with my XBOX.

But I've always considered the XBOX to be an adopted Sega system anyway (bought it for a Sega game, black in color).

No, not at all, you misunderstand. I don't think Dreamcast's library is dreadful, and in fact my opinion of it is pretty favorable overall. I was merely opining that compared to the 10 years of Sega that preceded it, the overall feel of the Dreamcast and its library was kind of a departure. It had a few games with that Sega feel, but it was largely a different vibe. Sonic Adventure was a launch game, was the most hyped and most heavily promoted DC game, and also the highest-selling title for the system, so I think it's appropriate to say it "sets the tone" of the system, in the same way Mario 64 sets the tone for N64.

Also, really, there were just a lot of little things that made Sega in the DC era not seem like Sega anymore. Like the advertisements (at least in the US). Every ad campaign starting with "Genesis does" going through to the Saturn ads such as "fly plaything, fly" had a sort of trademark edginess to them that was lacking in "it's thinking" (although that was clever) and the one with Tails in a bar fight (retarded).

Exactly my point. When exactly did Sega get reduced to developing copycats of other companies' hit games and promoting them as the next big thing from Sega? Part of what made them Sega was that they don't follow, they lead.

Awesome Possum was not developed by Sega, but substitute it for Greendog and your point (kind of) stands. The difference is, Sega's few un-Sega (or outright bad) games previously were kind of obscure (Greendog and Sonic Drift 2 didn't exactly burn up the charts), whereas Sega GT and Sonic Adventure were two of Sega's most heavily promoted games.

If you rub the 'Sega Sports' logos with silver polish they come off very nicely ;)

A lot of the Dreamcast games were ported to the last gen systems or had sequels on them, sonic, shenmue 2, crazy taxi, jet set radio, virtua tennis, virtua fighter and phantasy star online. And not just the sega games - Unreal tournament, Quake 3 arena, half life, rayman 2, resident evil: code veronia and metropolis street racer (which grew into the awesome PGR4). Even nights 2, toejam and earl 3 and streets of rage 4 (cancelled outright) all skipped the system.

Can anyone clarify these rumous I heard a LONG time ago about the dreamcast Sonic & Knuckles 2 / RPG and Halo (Before microsoft aqquired Bungie and back when the game was an RTS or third person adventure game).

I think the type of games that the DC needed in order to grow and compete with the PS2 were "J-RPGs" LOL! The Saturn Had RPGs and tactical strategy games, but they were primarily only available as imports. It seemed as though we were going to get a lot of great RPGs like Grandia 2 and Skies Of Arcadia, but for some reason, the DC ended up being mostly a console with fast paced action games, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

Well, that's what I like about it, lack of RPGs :)

Seg has made lots of copycats. Golden Axe Warrior, Streets of Rage, Columns as much as I love them were to at least to certain extent. They had to do that when they didn't have the license. Can anyone forget how much they hyped Eternal Champions?
