European Mega Drive Contest (coming autumn 2008)

After the awesomeness of our Anglo-Irish Mega Drive Tournament in September 2007, it has been decided to attempt to expand the competition for 2008. Currently we are looking for further nationalities to participate with England, Ireland and Portugal this autumn. Zebbe is working on getting Team Sweden together, while we are also in the early stages of establishing teams from Scotland and Wales (for geographical reasons primarily). We hope that in time there will be representation from across the globe at the Mega Drive Championships, but due to financial and time purposes, we are currently only looking at Europe.

Each national team must be made of five people, with the teams selecting the games played upon. The competition will probably be a league structure with two-points given for a win, one for a draw and nothing for a defeat, although we shall come up with exact details when it's established how many nations are taking part.

The contest will be held one Sunday in either September or October and shall last for five of the most awesome hours in the history of the world. The winners shall receive a trophy and a hearty round of applause for their endeavours.

About the Swedish team:

We currently have three members, me and two other guys I know who play Mega Drive. One of them is at a vacation in Thailand at the moment and when he is back he will try to ask another lad if he will join us, the other lad is going to ask his pal (again) if he wants to join if sponsorship cuts off costs. Chances are they will both turn the offer down, so any Swede can contact me here via PM and take a place in the team. It would be good if you live close to Täby, north of Stockholm, since the three current members live there.

What is this about? It sounds pretty cool - I'm from The Netherlands, so is there anyway in which I can participate?

Unfortunately, I ain't sure if I can come to another country just for playing a tournament. Also, I'll be probably too lazy to assemble my own team...

Sounds interesting but I have no clue about any other MD gamers in my country, nor have the money to travel to other countries...

We should get some American lend-leasers out there to help the Anglos...If you guys will fork out the $$$ I'd gladly take a trip to Europe to play Megadrive/Genesis games...SIGN ME UP BABY!

Damn too bad doing something like this on an inter-continental scale isn't really possible/feasible yet. Almost purely because I'm 90% sure Team Tucson would seriously injure the competition.

This sounds really fun though and I'm actually kinda jealous of all you guys that are gonna have the opportunity to do this. Playing great games with great people, what more could you ask for?

If I wasn't poor I could've helped Sweden, oh well.

If you are from the Netherlands and if we can find four more Dutch people to take part, then you can participate as part of Team Holland/Netherlands ;) - it will be the greatest experience of your life if you took part!

Hopefully within the next few years we will be able to expand this to include the Americas, however, at the moment we don't want to set our sights to high and have the entire contests fall like a house of cards. Should the 2008 Mega Drive tournament be a success then we shall look to further expansion for 2009.

I cannot get over just how awesome these events are. When Team Ireland travelled over to face Team England we had a wonderful weekend; meeting up on the Saturday for a drink and chat, before playing some fantastic games on the Sunday. I am confident the memories of that weekend will endure for a lifetime for everyone who participated. Obviously there are also U.K. and Portuguese domestic competitions, which are also fantastic.

We have been able to get Sega's consent to pursue sponsorship and should we find a business willing to stump up the cash, our primary channel for the revenue will be to help cover the travelling teams expenses. Naturally, since we do not have sponsorship yet, we cannot promise to cover any costs and it is a case of if we get sponsorship as opposed to when.

Mr Smith: I think getting sponsorship will immediately bear fruit to form new full teams. Especially for Team Sweden :).

I hope so too, however, obviously it would be silly to promise money that isn't there.

A minor point: The USA isn't part of Europe. I wish we could afford to accomodate a Team USA at the event, but sadly it is beyond our current means. Hopefully for 2009 ;)

Well, I won´t be able to "train" for at least two months, since i´m still abroad in South America, but if a Team Germany would form I´d gladly be a part of it.

You and McTom are welcome to join as part of a Team Holland/Netherlands if you can find three more people wanting to take part. In the interests of fairness and balancing the competition we need to be reasonably strict on the amount of people in each team.

England need no guns to defend ourselves. We have controllers and an elite group of soldiers handpicked from the finest in the U.K. Mega Drive league. Granted the Irish battered the English at the Anglo-Irish Tournament, but I'm sure both nations would be able to see off any challenge from the Americas.

I’m from Munich and I would like to join Team Germany if enough other players can be found. A few years ago I even organized Mega Drive Contests. Back in 2000 we had two 16-participator tournaments, a 2001 competition attracted 15 attendants. We actually had a rulebook and a magazine which informed about the intermediate results of the tournament. Unfortunately I’m pretty sure that none of these guys is willing to travel abroad for a tournament. Nevertheless I’m confident that we can raise a team. 2008 will be a great year for Germany: Two european championship victories (football and mega drive) in just a few months.

Just a quick update:
We have decided to reduce the number of members in each team to three in an attempt to, hopefully, gather together more nations for the event. It means we'll all have to play more games, but I'm confident we can live with that consequence. :D

Also, our 18th U.K. Mega Drive Championship is to be held on Thursday 10th July, in Nottingham. We still have places available so anybody who is interested please get in touch. We aren't totally hardcore (in fact some of our players don't own Mega Drives and turn up for the awesome atmosphere) and request all our members have a sense of humour :p

I think we need a massive annual megadrive world tournament, all nations and large teams of the best gamers and huge prizes and trophies. Im not worried about the europeans so much, its the japanese that worry me. Ive seen what they can do in Ikaruga, and it unsettles me. I want to move to japan so I can train with the best sega playerz and also to master ninja training, but thats another story.
How do you guys plan to organize this Euro tournament? What games etc? If I ran a tourney I would do it like they do in Vegas with the pool championships and bowling

This is a massive annual Mega Drive world tournament, well the closest there is to one. Hopefully one day we shall expand to have all the things mentioned, although we do have a trophy for the winning team :D

The contest is held in the U.K. and the other teams must come to us. In a few years it would be fantastic to take the tournaments to another country, however, organising it on a mutliple-nations basis is going to be difficult enough at the moment without the added pressures of finding a suitable venue in another land.

The players on each team select their games and then, at the event, each team nominates players to play on the other teams games. All players must play the same number of games and no player can play the same game twice. The exact format is difficult to decide until we know how many countries are actually taking part, but the main part of the competition will be a league. Should there be 6 countries taking part we will divide the league into two groups and, after each team has played about 12-15 games, the top two from each group will advance to the semi-finals. If there are less than 6 then the team who won the league will be declared champions.

These International Mega Drive competitions are still very much in their infancy, but with increased growth, exposure and outside financial support (which doesn't exisit currently) it could certainly thrive on a global scale.

I'd GLADLY take apart in any of these, but I lack funds, and I don't know any good(or bad) Estonian gamers, who have heard of the words "Mega Drive" :(

Ah TmEE, if we could afford to fly over three Estonians to take part then that would be awesome. Sadly, the competitions are currently too small for us to afford such things :( A Beglian Team would be amazing too and you're just a Eurostar ride away...

Making a team will another be pain in the ass, since I know only few people who know about MD, and I introduced MD to them, and they all suck at MD games...

I hope future I'd be able to take part in future...

Mr Smith... how many hours will last the competition? because I don't think you will get lots of people if the competiton lasts only 1 day.
How do yo know who wins a Bio Hazard Battle match with 2 players? and single Player? Hardest setting or normal ?
What about Street of Rage or Golden axe?

Hi Guys. I represent 33.33% of the Scotland team :). As with probably alot of other guys here, Its not a case of finding people who love the megadrive its a case of the distance. Alot of people I know say they would like to do it but are not wanting to tavel such a distance. So if people from Scotland dont want to travel to England, it will be even harder for the guys in central Europe to get teams together. Its such a shame that some people feel like that.

I'd like to take the travel, but my financial resources won't allow me to :(

You can, but everything is so expensive here it is actually cheaper to fly to Croatia than it is take a train to Scotland.

The Anglo-Irish Tournament lasted for five-hours and I would imagine a similar thing for the European Championship. It becomes harder if the contest lasts for more days, not only to organise, but the cost increases too. Certainly if the tournament expands beyond Western Europe we will need extra days, but at the moment the focus is solely on trying to get this to happen as cheaply as possible for all involved.

We have found the best way to play a tournament is with quick, action packed, 2-player competitive games. We're probably going to let the team who nominates the game select the winning conditions, although will reserve the right to veto such conditions if a game is going to last too long or the scoring become too complicated. Simplicity is a wonderful thing.

Where DOES the championship take place, exactly? London?

Bramcote Memorial Hall, Church Street, Bramcote, Nottingham, England.
The nearest airport is East Midlands Airport.
The nearest train station is Nottingham and there are regular bus services to and from the city, although we should be able to provide transport for visiting teams when in Nottingham.

Say if something like the channel islands wanted to compete, could they or would they have to compete under England? Also same goes to other places like that in Europe

How long does a busride from London to Nottingham take?
