SEGA Saturn -- 13 years old in the States

Sold my original UK launch Saturn and complete PAL collection in 2003, began collecting again xmas 2006, now back up to 188 PAL titles and have every piece of PAL hardware boxed and mint apart from the VideoCD card and IR pads, both of which I own multiple times but have no boxed examples of.

Also have every issue of Sega Saturn Magazine, Total Saturn and Saturn Power.

Easilly my most played system just above my MegaDrive, some amazing games to be had and when the programming was on the ball multi-format titles always stood up better on the Saturn.

Long live the Saturn!

Duke Nukem 3D on the Sega Saturn was a great port.

Yes I remember those days (I always mix up Babbages and Electronics Boutique) and both were a billion times better than now, Game Stop BLOWS HARD.

Best damn chain video game store around in the 90's and early 2000s. Now they suck.

On a side note, I called EB the other day and asked about a used computer game. The clerk said "there is no such thing as a used computer game..." and I said "I've been buying used computer games from Electronics Boutique for like 15 years and you tell me there's no such thing?" and she said "yes." I wanted to kill myself at that very moment.

Yea, we can't do that anymore. Company policy because people rip the cd keys/copy the discs and that sort of stuff that makes the game unusable to the next person (Reason they gave me). Dealing with used games on a case by case system is just ridiculous so we just don't take them in at all. There's other reasons why but its probably a good thing we don't do that anymore its more trouble than its worth.

Anyways, I'm so pissed that I never got to play a Saturn until I bought one a year ago. Awesome system, albeit expensive if you wanna do it right. Tonight when I get home Ill make sure to rock some Soukyugurentai and Saturn Bomberman like the video game gods intended.

You can always get them used PC games on eBay. You just gotta be careful.

I bought Red Orchestra for $7 and it works perfectly. Take that, Steam!

We used to have 10 player Bomberman parties at my mom's house when she was out of town. I think that is reason enough to own a Saturn. By the time we were doing this the Saturn was dead in the water and multi taps and controllers cost peanuts.

I bought a Saturn on Dec. 31, 1995. It was my main system for almost three years. I loved it at the time. Being a Saturn owner in 1996 was crazy-good, in terms of the games that were coming out (yes, in the US). Lots of classics. I still remember the day I took home Night Warriors, and my Playstation-owning, Darkstalkers-loving friend wept. I sold it off in late '98 after beating Magic Knight Rayearth and bought a Playstation. I bought a Saturn again in 2001, and still have that one, with a collection of over a hundred games. Great system.

I'm just wondering what great games I'm still missing out on, I have to snatch up Space Harrier and Lemmings

I love the system, but I must admit I haven't touched it in well over a year if not more. I think I dug it out to finally beat Princess Crown, and then wept at how much my Radiant Silvergun skills had deteriorated. At best I tend to hook it up once a year or so now to play Elevator Action Returns and Necronomicon. As far as video games are concerned, I most enjoyed those late Saturn years on USENET discovering all of these unheard of imports and enjoying the closeout prices of gems such as Saturn Bomberman, Panzer Dragoon Saga, and others.

Lotsa good times on there indeed. Between Bel, the KKC guy who ended every post with his trademark "who just did [x] for the [x] time ever" signature... we sure had some good discussion over the years over there.

I actually busted out my Saturn today. Didn't get a chance to play it on Mother's Day after all. Devoted an hour plus to it today playing Puzzle Fighter, World Heroes Perfect and QUAKE. I had fun, and will probably play it more this summer than I have in a LONG time. Playing Quake did remind me of something though. Quake was impressive to me 7 years ago when I first saw it. Not so much today. That's why beautiful 2D games rule. They remain ageless for eternity IMHO.

Still, had a blast, pardon the pun, blasting the Shambler to hell and back.

Any game that's truly beautiful will be ageless (at least aesthetically), 2D or 3D. Quake was never beautiful, it was just impressive.

I wish I could find that quote from back in the day where someone explained Quake only being ported to Saturn and N64 by saying that Playstation wasn't powerful enough to handle it or something. That quote always made me smile, even though I know it's not really accurate.
