Incredible Hulk

Marvel is trying to get the ball rolling again with its Hulk franchise, and things seem to be looking up for the big green lug. However, they always say "never forget where you came from," so let us now remind everyone of just how far the Hulk has come. Those who have played Radical Entertainment's awesome Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction probably don't remember an older game bearing the Incredible title, namely U.S. Gold's stinker on the Genesis. This little gem exists in a world where the Hulk is hurt by bullets and takes a pill to turn into Bruce Banner, and where a pool of water means certain death. Yes, I'm serious. We were offered the choice of taking the full brunt of a Gamma bomb blast or reviewing The Incredible Hulk, and trust us, the review won by only the slimmest of margins. Read the full article and try to imagine the famous Lonely Man theme playing in the background as your desire to play the game slowly walks off into the sunset.

Man, did this game suck. I used to own it, got it for 3 bucks. I traded it to Microplay and got my 3 bucks back. Should have called it the Unplayable Hulk.

Hah, and I just bought The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction for Xbox, after hearing it was soooo good.

I thought the 2003 game was garbage also? I do remember seeing a review around that time, and it didn't look bad but I'm sure there's better.

I'm just mad that the new "hulk hands" say a ton of stuff instead of just "HULK SMASH!"

The 2003 hands were more fun.

Hmm, I wonder if the SNES version is any better. I've heard equally disparaging remarks toward the SNES version, and I've seen it many times for $5 shipped or so but even I have never bothered to snatch it up. I hear some enjoyment can be squeezed out of it (you could say that for almost any game that's not 100% incompetent) but that it's really repetitive and not worth your time when there are 100s of better games to be explored.

U.S. Gold? Should be U.S. Brown, if you get my drift. Ive never heard of this game, let alone played it. Looks like crap, like the Indiana Jones U.S. Gold platformer. U.S. Gold should have just stuck to the mediocre Olympic titles they did.

Well, to be fair, the Hulk's problem is the same as Superman's in that he's just too powerful to be well represented in the standard 2-D platform format of the day. I honestly think the systems of the day just weren't powerful enough to do a good depiction of them since the sky's the limit when it comes to their abilities. This is why the comic game successes tend to be with the weaker characters.

Even then, Sunsoft's Batman is a poor Batman game but a great platformer featuring Batman. You could have easily swapped out Batman for any other character sprite, and the game would remain the same. You can't say that about Sega's Spider-Man, which is uniquely a Spider-Man game, but that works since Spider-Man isn't near invincible and can be grounded to an extent.

Yeah, Hulk for the MD was indeed below average. The review was right down to the point.

And I agree with the statement that Batman for the NES is one of the best super-hero games ever. It was one of the first NES games I bought after I restarted collecting.

Hulk looks like Ralph Wiggum on steroids... and peas. :)

I've played this game at someone's house a few years ago.

I own both the Genesis and Game Gear versions of The Incredible Hulk, and I gotta say, I think the Game Gear version is the more polished of the two, gameplay wise. Hulk seems to control tighter, enemies don't fire so incessantly and annoyingly, and the boss battles are a little more challenging.

Nice review, though. I still kind of like the game, but it's more of a nostalgia thing.

I rented this once years ago, and I think I couldn't get past the first level out of pure lethargic action.

the game is fun but the Bruce Banner stealth missions slow the game down
