I'm hooking up my Dreamcast to my new-ish monitor for the first time. But when I turn it on, instead of showing me the Dreamcast picture, the monitor gives me a message that says "Not optimum mode. Recommended mode: 1440 X 900 60 Hz". I have never run my computer at 1440X900 (and don't you have to use DVI to get that? This is definitely plugged in to the VGA port). It displays my computer image fine. What gives?
your monitor doesn't like what DC outputs... at least mine didn't say anything when I hooked my DC to it with a homemade-a-bit-different-than-original VGA-box-that's-inside-the-DC
DC outputs regular VGA sync, supported on ALL VGA equipped monitors.
Sadly LCDs bitch if not the NATIVE res. Go into options and turn off "Warning mode" or whatever it calls it. My LCD has this, and it's switched off.
not quite... the VGA that DC outputs has quite some room to move... my DC has custom AV outs... a DIN8 for TV, and a D15 for VGA, and so I hook the monitor to D15, and have TV on DIN8, I get 2 images horizontally (and 480p hehe), the sync is exactly double as of "normal" RGB... now I put in SA2, and my TV starts showing messed up pic.... the sync has changed... also, I can see in my LCDs info menu that sync is a bit different.
a non modified DC will always output propper VGA when in VGA mode.. it never changes sync.

I figured out why I get some sync fluctuation with my DC, the VGA box I made is not like original, its way simpler, but it works with my equipment so I don't care...
anyway, answer the the first post : your monitor sucks when other monitors work... and if they don't, your VGA box has some issues...
Hmm. I didn't notice any "warning mode" or anything similar.
what's the make and model? i'll go through the manual..

I ordered 1 from 2 different stores and they both came broken! Now I have to ship both of them back tomorrow. Urgh!

I suggest to use a CRT monitor instead - or a modern HDTV, which nowadays are capable of a decent upscaling and look excellent when fed with 480p in RGBHV.
LCDs are a bit slow too... I have a 4ms one and my brother has a 2ms one and both were not too good to play SA2... nothing beats a CRT

Ok, checked the manual and service manual. Sad news, the warning screen can NOT be turned off. It's there way of forcing native resolution (though oddly it does allow 800x600 and others, to atleast activate 1440x900 resolution, but VGA 640x480 is not allowed).
Aw shit, that's hella lame. Oh well, thanks for finding that info.
edit: But I just tried putting my computer in 640X480, and it worked with no problems.
