What is the purpose of the VMU's and are they actually needed to play games?
They are the memory cards for the Dreamcast, you can't save your progress in a game without them. The little screen is sometimes used in games, Virtua Tennis for instance you get a little representation of the game, you can actually play it just looking at the controller. It has some more proper uses in other games, can't recall which ones though. You could also download games from the net, and play them on the VMU seperatly to the Dreamcast, like a little handheld console.
You can also get third party memory cards with no screen, ones which store a lot more data too - which is good because the standard VMU doesn't hold a huge amount.

Hasslehoff couldn't handle a proper car like that one, no electronic gizmos to help him drive like ABS, Power Steering, Knight Industries super computer...
He would not wanna drive it, he has something different in mind!:D

Anyway, if you want VMU's, buy 'em from the UK. I bought two or three from ninjabearhug, all with caps, and with shipping! For the price of one VMU in the states, without a cap.
Same damn thing, except the Dreamcast logo at the top is missing the swirl.

I just picked up a Dreamcast (never owned one), two controllers and all hookups for $24.95 (mint condition) off of eBay. Gonna pick up a VMU and some choice games next.

As David J. rightly said, VMUs are dirt ass cheap in the uk, I got 3 boxed like new in a single lot for a fiver ($10) with free shipping!
The guy even sent me a back of batteries for them, although nowadays I don't bother.
Uou live in UK so the shipping can be free for you.... I live in the other side of europe and we all know the UK shipping costs.
UK shipping costs aren't that bad, most other countries are worse. VMU's weigh very little so Airmail will be cheap

I want a clear red controller and a clear red VMU, but they are damned expensive.
