Favorite Street Fighter Character

Hi all, Its Edge bringing you my first post. As I have seen from some of the threads everyone here seems to know their stuff about technology. I on the other hand am not so technologically literate so here is a simple thread for everyone to talk about.

SF Championship Edition

Super SF New Challengers

I have to say super because it has the complete set of characters also their is a combo system and some small upgrades here and there. Favorite guy is Vega and Guile.

Guile - I only mastered him when I bought it for genesis because the arcade was too hard to use him.

Super SF New Challengers is tosh. The sound is even WORSE than in the prequel, there are fewer speeds available and the new characters don't add enough to all those bad points.

The best character is without doubt Ken Masters, who also starred on the Japanese Golden Axe II boxart and in any random 80s glam rock band.

From the SFII series it has to be Ken for the guys and Cammy for the chicks. (Wonder why, hehe.) From SF Alpha/Zero I'd choose Dan for guys because he's actually funny, and Rose for the ladies. And my SFIII picks are unquestionably Ibuki and Twelve.


I prefer Super to SCE because of the additional characters.

I like the Alphas and the character Dan is hilarious but I never really found a character I like to play with on them. I tried Birdie, Cody, and Guy and got tired of all of them. I then went back to just using Ken. I dont know which to pick!

SSF II is too slow for me on my PAL MD.

Special edition is OK. I like Sagat the most :)

Overall, I prefer Akuma and Magneto in X-Men vs Street Fighters (my favorite Fighting game of all time with Eternal Champions). Killer Team! Zanglief is great as well.

It is really hard to tune up perfectly a Fighting game. And there are so many as well!

I am another one who enjoys Sagat, although I'm not as good playing as him as some of the other characters. I also like Blanka and Bison.

The four new characters in Super Street Fighter 2 are tosh.

I think there is an option at the opening screen that if you hit right on the D-Pad you can add stars to the game. Each star speeds up the gameplay. I usually play SSFII with two stars four is the Max. At max stars I guess its kind of like hyper fighting minus the silly colors.

I must admit that for playability it's Ken or Ryu, followed closely by Guile.
I think E. Honda is also really cool to play with.

Super Street Fighter 2 is far better than Championship Edition in all but sound. The sound in SSF2 is truly awful. They have somehow managed to make the fight announcer sound gay, the music for each individual stage is enough to make your ears bleed and all the characters have had their voices altered, none more so than Guile, who upon throwing a sonic boom sounds as though he should be clad in pink and carrying a Chihuahua.
The gameplay is far better in it though, it's much more fluid than Championship Edition, which at times feels lumpy and slow. The combos are also really good in SSF2.

Yes, granted, the 'New Challengers' are a load of old tosh in reality, but it adds a little extra spice into the game nevertheless. I would never choose to play as one of those useless characters though.

Street Fighter Alpha 3 proved you could successfully introduce new characters into the ageing format however, with Dan, Akuma and Birdie (who's appearance in the original Street Fighter game was crap) all being good quality additions.

My favourite character to play as would have to be Ken. I have mastered Ken completely now. Although Ryu is inherently similar, I can't get on with him as well as Ken.
The worst characters to play as have to be Balrog (possibly the most boring fight you'll ever have,) Vega (unnecessarily quick and rather weak when it comes down to it,) Blanka (looks cool, but is crap) Guile (just no) and Dhalsim (why would anyone want a jump to last for 4 hours?)

That is deliberately omitting the new challengers as there is very little good that can be said about them. Especially T-Hawk. What a joke he is!

As actual characters, I like Ryu and Sagat.

I like playing with Ken the most in SFIICE (I'm not a fan of 'Turbo) and probably Guile in SSFII. Zangief is really fun in both.

Yeah - I 'hinted' at this in the EC-Cftds thread, but didn't really take the time to explain it well at all. The maximum speed is pretty damn fast - even on PAL machines :)

My favourite characters (depending on mood) are Ryu, Guile and Chun-Li. I tend to prefer SSFII on the Mega Drive, not sure this has anything to do with the additional characters though - I'd say on balance Cammy is probably my favourite of those. Not sure about the "England" level though - obviously, everyone resides in a castle and/or mansion, but I don't believe I've ever seen the northern lights.
Oh, and the lack of bemonocled gents is, of course, an unforgivable omission.

Don't forget top hats, you can't have a monocle without a top hat.

Ken hands down. I NEVER start playing SF without choosing Ken first, even if it's only for a single battle.

If I remember correctly the origional color uniforms are still there in super, its just a different color depending on what button you push. It cracks me up some people don't know you can change your speed in super. My friend just got it for snes and was like "Yeah, its pretty good but really slow." I called him an idiot and showed him the not so obvious for some way to adjust it. The sound does suck in super but I could care less honestly, they fixed a lot with the gameplay. I like Fei Longs stage music way better on genesis than on SNES, but maybe im just used to genesis music. I can't choose a favorite character as I like them all, but I'm cheap as fuck with Ken and vega(M. Bison us)

Aside from other minor annoyances, the gameplay doesn't feel right to me and I really don't like the way the music fades out at the end of a round. Of course, its way better than the awful crowd noise at the end of rounds on the SNES version. ;)

Would it be possible, for once, to discuss Street Fighter without treading down the route of whether or not Championship Edition or Super were better, or whether or not the SNES version was superior to the Mega Drive?

*sigh*, the Genesis port of SSF2 was a mediocre conversion of a (literally, admitted by the developers) half-assed coin-op that was surpassed by the superior, more complete Super Turbo a few months after its release, which in turn was released before the SSF2 home conversions (Genesis & SNES) hit store shelves, which made them even less palatable. Capcom actually took a big financial hit by overproducing carts (specifically for the SNES version, damn Nintendo brown-nosers) for a demand that was far below their expectations. Those who were wise stuck to their "Special Champion Edition" and "Turbo" carts which they paid good money for almost a year before.

EDIT: Chun-Li. Still the finest hips, legs and T&A (YES Mai Shiranui fanboys, she does have ample amounts of the latter as well) on a female fighting game character.

After my brother bought SSFII SNES, we had loads of fun playing the game until SF Alpha came out. It'd still be some time after that before I ever laid eyes on a SSFIIT machine. Alpha 2 was probably on consoles by then.

We were wise enough to skip the "Special Champion Edition" and "Turbo" carts which added less over SFIIWW than SSFII did over SC/Turbo.

Does Ken play any differently at all in the early games? Because I was never aware of it.

Oh yeah, and I prefer SNES SFIIs. Partly just for sentimental reasons, as the game came with my SNES, and thus was the first console game I ever played / owned, ever!

Stronger Dragon Punch, for one thing. There were other differences, IIRC, but in SFII Ryu was more Hadoken-based while Ken had a stronger DP. That's why I preferred Ken - because his fierce DP could really knock the shizat out of the other guy.

Ken and Ryu are the same on World Warrior, but CE onward they have different attributes. I always chose Ryu over Ken in WW, but prefer the way Ken plays in everything else..

Not exactly. For the most part yes, it did blow away every other SF2 home port at the time, but even "DieHard GameFan" (a.k.a the "hype machine") pointed out the lack of parallax in the backgrounds and a small amount of missing character animation. But yeah, they still went ahead and gave it almost a perfect score and whatnot.

Before "Street Fighter Collection", with its superior ports of Super & Super Turbo, was released in '97, SSF2T was arguably one of the top reasons to own/play a 3DO. I vividly remember, back in the mid-'90's being at my female cousin's husband's house, who owned a 3DO and was playing Super Turbo w/Akuma as I watched and salivated. I asked him if I could play, maybe even get it a round or two, and he coldly said "No." Good times. I've never seen a 3DO in person since, much less played one. :(


Ideally, the release order, as Capcom originally intended, should've been like this:

WW>>>>>>CE>>>>>>ST (which is when they planned to introduce the faster game speed)


"Turbo" was their attempt at legitimizing all of the good aspects of the CE hacks while at the same time combating and cashing in on their appeal, and SSF2 was a rush-job which I suspect they released in order to compete with "Mortal Kombat II", both of which came out in September/October 1993. To this day, people fondly remember and have good things to say about "Turbo", and still play it (and to a lesser extent CE) as an alternative to the gold standard of SF2 (Super Turbo), while vanilla Super has become a footnote, remembered only by those who owned it on SNES & Genesis and those who participated in those circa-'94 official Capcom SSF2 tournaments. Other than that it was DOA in the arcades and amongst the fighting game community. Alpha 1 was also a rush-job in the vein of vanilla SSF2 that has forgotten over time, but at least it was remembered and played briefly due to it breaking away from the SF2 monotomy of the previous four years.


Yup..............yet another regurgitation of the facts, trivia and console differences about everything SF2 that everyone already knows about, courtesy of Aarzak. ;)

That speccy one looks better than the C64 version.

Vega is so overly powerful in Super Street Fighter. He has an incredibly long reach, jumps higher then all other characters, and is faster.

Also in Street fighter CE characters like sagat, balrog, vega, and bison fighting systems are crappy and or not even finished at all. Thats another reason why I pick SSFII as better.

Philistine! C64 is and has always been superior to the Sinclair Spectrum, therefor Speccy SFII can't be better!

This is just my oppion ok, but I think Street Fighter 2 is the most overrated game in history. By the time it came out, it was the slowest, choppiest game ever made then (only rivaled or surpassed by ever other dumb fighter game that came after it for the next 6 years), and it convinced other developers that they could make their games slow and choppy as crap and still make money off of their games and so then most developers started cutting corners of sprite animation and games became choppier than they were in the 8-bit era. Most people say all the time, "it's the gameplay that counts." Yes, and it being so choppy and slow, it takes away a lot from the gameplay, since you HAVE TO WAIT 2 SECONDS FOR RYU TO CHOP HIS FOOT DOWN SO YOU CAN MOVE AGAIN!!!; and don't get me started on the moves, kick, punch, jump, those are the blandest moves ever. All it is is: I hit him, he hits me, I hit him, he hits me. Very very boring. I may have been a baby when this game came out, but I still knew Sonic and Mario were like a billion times better to play back then than these grabage fighting games.

This is just my oppion, don't take it seriously.

I also believe SF2 is overrated.

How many versions of this game came out in the first three years?


Capcom milking it for all these years has done little to change my opinion.

Damn, that Street Fighter 2 must've been a really shitty game considering all the updates they had to do for it.

Capcom just likes to drive people insane by giving every game an overdose of sequals, subseries and updates.
