Most overhyped system since the 3DO?

Isn't the Wii a bit of a con job? I mean, as overhyped and gushed about by every magazine/media outlet as the Wii is, what the hell is the point? I mean aren't the best games for it just re-hashes of GameCube and PS 2 games anyway?

I mean, its doing well, unlike the 3DO. But it seems like there is just as much hype and almost no real substance. Much like the 3DO library, almost all of its good games are ports from other systems, and it has a massive library of utter crap.

Am I wrong?

I am currently considering diving into this generation with a 360 (upon news of the Splatterhouse game and hopes for Sonic Unleashed) and some enthusiastic Nintendo fanboy was like "Man, get yourself a Wii!! You can't go wrong!" almost with some desperation, like that people are starting to catch on and he can fool me or something.

I have to give Nintendo credit. They filled many niches. It is cheapest system and the kiddies usually go for the Nintendo stuff so why not go all out with the gimmicks. The kids eat that stuff up. While I feel its controller in some ways is a gimmick oh what a Gimmick it is. I think Nintendo had to try something different this time around. The Gamecube never really stood out that much. Personally like yourself I would go with the 360 but I still think Nintendo really managed to tap an untapped market with the Wii. Unfortunately for real gamers a system targeted at parties, families, small children, senior citizens really doesn't not cut it for me.

Considering the fact that the Wii is the only console I've sold since the SNES years ago, I'd say yes.

Wii VC makes the Wii woth owning IMO but then again, I only have a Wii because it was a present for my 7 yr old kid brother.

The 360 is a no-brainer, as far as gaming consoles go. The 360 has the best online service and the largest online userbase of all the consoles. The achievement system really sets this system apart, from what Nintendo and Sony has to offer.

The PS3 has a decent online service, but they kind of killed the use of a headset, by requiring it to be Blue-tooth. I had Call of Duty 4 for the PS3, but the online userbase was pretty much dead, even though the title is selling quite well on the system. Even during gaming sessions with Warhawk, it was pretty rare to hear a team-mate talking through a headset.


The Wii will be the first Nintendo console I have not bought, within the first year and a half since its release. I probably won't buy the console, until it hits the $150 price range.

Like any game system, your purchase should be based upon if a system has games on it you *want* to play.

It sounds like you want a 360.

My take on that Nintendo system.

It is a gimmick system, it is exactly as Nintendo said it was...a system designed for people who aren't into video games. Take away the "innovative" controller and its library looks part Gamecube (some good 1st party games) and part shovelware.

I'm sure the Nintendo Army would have my head for these comments...

I haven't bought any of the current generation of consoles, as I do not wish to cheat on my PS2. With those games now dirt cheap, and my library still relatively small, I see no point in buying into the latest generation.

The Wii is the only current generation console that I have never played. While I cannot deny it seems to be quite revolutionary in it's interactivity, I feel it is more a family based console, or something a metrosexual would buy, owing to the faddish-ness of the Wii. I don't feel the Wii is a gaming console in the way other consoles are. The golden days when nerds made games for nerds are over. While the Wii is quite a step forwards, I wish they had made the step forwards in a more masculine manner.

The Wii is indeed over hyped. I didn't really notice that they were intending this for the casual gamer market pre-release, so I foolishly picked one up at its release. Now I'm stuck with it for this console generation unless I can magically conjure up money for a 360 or PS3 (highly doubtful) and that's making me a bit sour.

The games are extremely poor except for a few first party titles and maybe one or two third party titles. The only thing that is causing me to keep it at this point is the homebrew support, which is shaping up VERY nicely.

The Wii is great for a bit of fun, mucking about with the missus & friends, but as far as any sort of 'hardcore' gaming goes it's very dissapointing.

Saying that though, I think even before release that was surely to be expected?

Nintendo returning to their 'Family Computer' market was always going to be of little/no attraction to the average gamer.

Having the unfortunate experience of having owned, and sold, all the current gen systems the only one I wasn't dissapointed with was the 360, and I shall be re-purchasing one of the newer elites as soon as I can.

The GameCube isn't so bad. It has some great stuff (Resident Evil 4 and Ikaruga to be exact). I understand it didn't do so well compared to Sony and Microsoft. It is also dirt cheap, which is why I have one. Got mine, used in box for less than $20.

So I guess Nintendo has just given up then? Like they know they aren't going to be able to compete anymore so its on to 2 year olds and old ladies?

I've had my Gamecube since day one, and the component cable since last year. It's a great system, but its software didn't do it justice.

The console is great for its 1st and 2nd party titles, but the 3rd party support was just barely okay.

One day I'll get Twighlight Princess for the GC, but for the most part, the 30+ games I have for the system is about as large as my collection will get.

I love the GameCube too. It's pretty much the only system I've actually grown up with from the start of its run to the end. Shame though that I only got $3 a week allowance in its heyday... I missed out on so many games that I now have difficulty locating locally. Despite that, I have more GC games than any other console and it's probably the system I play most from this decade.

BTW, gamevet, Twilight Princess for the GC is wonderful. I like it far better than the Wii version (I own both)

The Wii was the first 'next-gen' console I bought, and that was for the likes of No More Heroes, Trauma Center, and Castle Shikigami III.

I have a feeling it's going to be a great system for niche games, since it's so easy for publishers to put out games for.

Also, if O3 release Radio Allergy for it(which was supposed to be one of the last GC games, and it got cancelled), that's a selling point right there.

Is there really a need for another "preferred system rant" thread? Sounds like you don't get the point of the Wii. Cool. I love certain games that utilize the Wii-remote, like Zack & Wiki or Boom Blox, so I don't think I could ever knock the system for being "gimmicky", especially since I like that "gimmick" so darn much. And being a "hardcore gamer" (labels are getting old), I actually tend to think that the Wii-remote is better suited for certain genres than traditional control, a great example being the shooter genre.

Like Rusty said, YOUR purchase should be based on what YOU want to play. Personally, I despise FPS in war settings... which is around 90% of the 360's library... so maybe not the best choice for myself. But I understand that, and I plan around it ;)

Hmm, better keep that kind of revelation to yourself for now. jk but I know what you mean. Being practically a slave to Nintendo, I have grown an enormous amount of hate and respect for the company. No matter how much you may like or dislike Nintendo, you gotta admire what they did this time around.

Like Iron Lizard said they brought a whole new market into play. Thats really a genius approach because if your targeting kids, most likely these kids aren't going to have $300-500 to throw down on a system so they have to beg their parents. Parents have a much easier time throwing down $250 on a system they're attracted to (The Wii) then 400 or 500 on a system that they don't really understand (PS3/360). Plus whether intentionally or unintentionally, the way Nintendo can't keep supply up with demand continues to keep people excited over the Wii with the old "I can't have it, so I obviously need it/want it even more than before" mind trick.

I personally don't think this approach will work in the next generation of consoles once it becomes apparent that aside of mini-games and cheap thrills, the Wii offers little more.
