Most overhyped system since the 3DO?

I always saw the hype as claiming there would be really innovative titles that took immersion to another level because of the motion sensing controls, I have yet to see anything like that. Wii Sports is the closest thing.

The N64 was very overhyped. Since Big N had always dominated the console market everybody was expecting the N64 would wipe the floor with those lowly 32-Bit-systems. I remember how Howard Lincoln called the PS1´s and Saturn´s sales peanuts in the face of their silicon-valley-quality new dimension of gaming.
And then it came and offered....very few games. The huge pixels of the 32 Bit consoles had been replaced by incredibly smudgy undetailed textures. And instead of having things pop up suddenly there was loads of fog like 3 meters away. That was definately not the long-awaited revolution, just a system with different flaws from the others and less software.

But the N64 had Goldeneye, one of the best games ever. But I can see if you bought the console for a lot of money why you'd be dissapointed in it, as there wasn't a whole lot else worth playing, especially if the Nintendo franchises didn't appeal. I don't remember the 64 being hyped that much, but then I wasn't interested when they came out didn't buy one untill they were cheap anyway.

I think the Wii is definitly over hyped, because a whole lot of people are buying it purely based on the fact its the cool system to own, and on the strength of getting Wii Sports with it. As fun as Wii Sports is for a while, there really isn't an awful lot to it. The fact so many people buy the Wii, then get bored after the intial wow of the controller and then don't really play it unless to show it off to a friend or relative who hasn't played one, says it all.

The N64 also had Zelda:OoT. That and Goldeneye are, in my opinion (which makes it correct), the greatest console games ever. Shame the majority of other games on the system were abject tosh.

Games that take immersion to the next level:
Zack & Wiki, Pro Evolution Soccer 2008, Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, No More Heroes, Resident Evil 4 (believe me, the difference is astronomical), Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz (Joe's going to disagree with me on that one), Okami, Wario Ware, and BOOM mother fucking BLOX! How has no one played this game?

I think the Wii is helping revitalise gaming and introducing new people to my favourite hobbie but I have no respect for A console when 98% of all the games on it are mini games and re-release's. Plus im convinced Nintendo's the most evil thing since Star wars episode 1.

The Wii-mote was originally planned for the Gamecube. Nintendo just repackaged the GC, added 512MB of flash memory, added the new controller and called it a Wii. ;)

Yes, its certainly over-hyped because your overestimating the competency of these consumers. Of course to gamers like us who have long been into video games, we knew what Nintendo claimed basically right from the start with the Wii and what they claimed is basically what they delivered.

However like you said, a large percentage of the people who buy the Wii are people who wouldn't otherwise be into video games. Most of these people have NO IDEA what they are doing, trust me. They make their decision based off of 30 minutes of playing it at a friends house and the overblown hype they hear from other said consumers. I sell these things and no one that buys them ever knows exactly what they're buying, they buy it purely because:
A: They heard it was cool and everyone at the office has one
B: They stumble upon them when they're in stock at my work. They practically have to buy one when they actually see them because turning down a Wii is like a pothead refusing cheetos its not gonna happen often.
