People ALWAYS do this, forgetting that both the Sega CD and 32X are merely peripherals for the Genesis. Nobody on the planet calls the TurboGrafx CD player its very own system. Maybe Turbo fans are smarter? Then again, even Turbo fans call the Sega CD and 32X as separate systems. Maybe Sega just promotes stupidity in every kind of person?
Because the majority of people dont pay enough attention to realize that they are different.
I think we classify them as separate systems to organize things easier. It's easier than going through a massive list of "Genesis games" and having to actually figure out which ones require the CD or 32X.
That's not what I'm talking about. Ask a person what systems he owns and he'll say 3 systems, a Genesis, a Sega CD and a 32X.

I've always counted them as one system myself. I mean, if Sega CD and 32x are each separate systems, does that make "CD 32x" a fourth system? Is my Turbo Duo three systems in one because it can play Super CD games? Is my Saturn two systems because I have the RAM cart?
Perhaps it's because Sega CD and 32x have their own logos, and the "system bar" on the left side of the game packaging is a different color. Maybe people would think of them as one system if the games had Genesis-looking packaging with "CD" or "32x" inserted in.
I'd say they are three different systems.
Genesis = Genesis
Genesis != SegaCD
Genesis != 32x
From a media, gaming, and programming prospective. Same with TG and Duo. From a programming prospective they are pretty different to code for, not to mention the medium. Just my opinion.
But you can't program for a Sega CD or a 32X without also programming for a Genesis. You can have a Genesis without the others, but you cannot have the others without a Genesis.
I think J Factor has a great point. It is all in the marketing.
the worst is how they call them a failure when the Super NES had something as retarded and pointless as the Super GameBoy. Lets see, 32X sells for at least $35 on eBay, Sega CD easily clears $60, Super GameBoy, hmmm, I bought mine for $5 shipped with tetris in the slot, you do the math. I think you should definitely mention that you have a 32X and Sega CD when you list your systems, but they are definitely add ons. Its kind of like the RAM expansion in the N64, how much was that POS, like $40? Only a handful of games required that thing, yet no one goes around calling it a failure. I bet there are more 32X games than RAM expansion requiring games. Sure some games could be played in hi-res, but only a few really looked any better and many had slowdown in hi-res mode. I think the 32X and Sega CD were both great ideas, its just that the average gamer wasn't old enough to have the money to spend on them at the time, that and they were widely misunderstood.
As much as I agree that is was kind of retarded and pointless the Super GameBoy sold very well, in Europe at least.Quote:

The Super GameBoy actually makes GameBoy graphics look worse. When playing GameBoy games on an actual GameBoy screen your like, "Oh I'm playing a game on a black and white screen." On the Super GameBoy, they try to artificially color everything using 4 colors and your like, "This sucks, the graphics only have 4 colors."
And don't forget that the SGB plays the music about 3% faster than it should.
That is why I can not play my games in it, even though my old GB Color is dead. In fact, I only have it because it came with my SNES when I bought it on Ebay.
I think it sold OK in the US too, but so did the 32X initially and considering it was only around for about 3 years the Sega CD did too. It was very clear that the Genesis alone was the flagship console and the add ons were to appeal to different markets like the budding CD-based interactive market and later the home arcade system market with the 32X. I can't think of ANY add on for ANY system that was in the home of 90% of base system owners, so how can you go around calling something that sold several million units a failure when it wasn't meant to be on every system? This is especially true when you consider how cheap a Genesis was compared to an average game, almost 50% of Genesis owners (or more) probably only ever had 5 games, so obviously they wouldn't shell out $200 for a CD add on or $150 for a 32X when they just wanted a couple games. No matter what you say or do, people just don't seem to understand the Sega CD and 32X, even after all these years, you can talk and talk to Nintendo fanboys and they still don't get it.Quote:
