Why do they refer to it as "The OC ReMix Team"? Anyone who frequents the site knows that 90+% of the music there is pretty bad (and the site takes itself waaaay too seriously). There are some good "remixers" but I have always been really disappointed in the collaborations and such. Even the officially licensed stuff from certain members like Square Dance, etc, was pretty dreadful. I do not have high hopes for the music in this game now. Oh well, I guess they were trying to be cheap since I hear this project isn't looking as rosy as it once was.
Wait, didn't you contribute to OverClocked, like YEARS ago?
I remember after hearing the Punch-Out remix ("Mr. Dream had turned into a nightmare, his fists had a taste of steel. I flinched from his assaulting, apprehensions became real") and I found the site hoping to find the band. I vaguely remember reading your name some where.
Joe, I'm guessing you haven't actually heard Blood on the Asphalt? I agree that OCRemix is largely rubbish, but the stuff that's right is very right, and BotA is one of those cases. If you disagree I'd like to know what you think is inferior about the album...
Since you asked, here are my opinions of EVERY single tune as well as links:
Opening demo:
Sounds grungy and removed from Street Fighter 2. Not really in the spirit of the game at all. There is only a small hint of SF2 in there and the rest is useless. Sounds too dirty.
Here Comes a New Challenger:
Why does this exist as its own extended track? I'd hate to be playing the game and have to wait over a minute for this nonsense to complete before the second player is allowed to play.
Blanka:
I like the bass, the tune is OK. Goes off on a tangent in the middle for no reason that is not even Street Fighter related. Still, it's better than Yasunori Mitsuda's version which was complete anus grease.
Chun-Li:
Wow... waaaaaaaay too downtempo to actually play the game to. They are seriously putting this shit in the game? This music is more appropriate for leisurely urinating out a glass of milk that you drank a half an hour ago than having a fast HD fighting match.
T-Hawk:
T-Hawk's music was never outstanding to begin with. This doesn't do too much to improve on it other than the nylon guitar. Still too slow.
Dee Jay:
What the fuck is this? The squishing sound of me repeatedly stabbing my ears is more pleasant than this! This is a great tune to contemplate suicide to.
E. Honda:
Nothing stands out here and it seems pretty far removed from the original source tune. Even more bland than the music in Flink (cart version, at that).
Dhalsim:
It is alright, but still too far removed to be included in an actual Street Fighter game, even if it is only on PSN and Xbox Live.
Guile:
This sounds more appropriate for maybe a puzzle game or perhaps a rousing bout of braiding ass hairs.
Zangeif:
Well it takes 45 seconds before it even starts to resemble the Zangeif theme. The generic drum beat probably came stock with Fruity Loops or whatever retarded program was used to make this nonsense. No skill found here.
Fei Long:
Amazingly, I actually approve of this one for the most part. The drums are too overdone, though. Doesn't anyone play REAL drums any more? Does anyone even remember how? Other than that, a good listen.
Cammy:
Way too slow to fight to. However if I were ever in a coma, this would be the perfect soundtrack to keep up with all the action.
Ken:
Sixto is one of the very few "remixers" whom I still appreciate in this day and age. He usually pumps out extremely awesome stuff. His Ken theme remains true to the original as it should for a game yet jazzed up. His guitar skills are incredible and the write-ups he gets over at OCR by DJ Pretzel (who uses the information section of each song as his own personal blog) seem very ho-hum. He deserves more recognition than he can get at OCR. His works on www.VGMIX.com are incredible. This song is not his best work but it is still great.
Ryu:
I guess the musical trend these days among the kiddies is the trance drum beats? C'mon, you guys can be more original than that... can't you? Otherwise this is decent.
Balrog:
This is OK at best but seems too distant and disconnected from the beat which seems simply laid on top. Is it trying to sound like Metal Gear Solid or Warhawk on the Playstation 1? I like Yuzo Koshiro's version MUCH better even though it took 9 years to get going.
Vega:
Oh shit. Have you ever been jealous of deaf people? As of right now I sure am!
Sagat:
I never cared much for Sagat's music, so I guess this is OK. It doesn't make me hate it or anything. I do appreciate how it's not as overly flamboyant as many of these other tunes.
M. Bison
Oooooo fake orchestra, always a sure bet! This is complete ass, trying to sound all evil, dramatic and suspenseful. Instead it sounds more like I need to blast out some serious diarrhea and the nearest toilet is 50 feet away. Will I make it in time? Since I can hear this music, it is clear that I did not.
Akuma:
Another dirty-sounding tune that would sound better if I were deaf.
Dhalsim Ending:
Just as boring as the Dhalsim tune above. What a coincidence!!
Guile Ending 1:
This doesn't make me want to commit suicide or anything, maybe just a little overdose requiring a hospital stay and an expensive stomach pump.
Guile Ending 2:
I'm thinking Van Gogh may have been onto something... that takes care of one ear. Need to make friends with Mike Tyson AND QUICK to take care of the other one.
Ranking Display:
They made a whole song out of this? Why don't they make a song out of the punch sound? This is nothing. It has no right whatsoever to exist. Whoever created it should be forced to pay extra taxes this year.
Staff Roll:
Yuck! The sound quality is gawdawful! The arrangement sucks as well. I have a huge urge to cancel my internet to make sure stuff like this never finds its way to my ears again.
Sweet jesus, the obscenities...........*faints* *THUD*
Damn, Joe, life must hold a lot of disappointment for you, because you sure are hard to please.
(Yes, the rap tracks - Vega and DeeJay - suck.)
Maybe I should lower my standards?
I've never paid much mind nor listened to any fan/unofficial remixes of video game music.......and to a certain extent not even official remixes/arrangements like the arranged music on the official "Thunder Force III" soundtrack. It sucks.
I agree with that (about the official Thunder Force 3 arrange soundtrack). The arrangements TechnoSoft included on the Saturn Gold Packs were much nicer, although there were only a few tunes included.
to be fair Joe is right! Half of those tracks suck balls! Especially the RnB rappy rubbish in a few of them
