Anyone know if the older 16bit era copies have been scanned and archived... somewhere?
Yeah, those mags were usually more than 200 pages each. That's a lot of scans even if you omit the ads (and that would be taking out half the fun).
I still have every issue I've bought of the magazine. I'm missing the first 4 or 5 issues, but the rest is all there.
This guy is trying to resurrect the name with this website and Halverson's blessing.
Even though they only have a random issue of GameFan last time I checked, "Retromags" is your friend:

GREAT site. Because of it, I've FINALLY been able to (and still am ATM) reading through Electronic Gaming Monthly #65 (December 1994), which at 402 pages is still the biggest issue of EGM ever. Also, having a digital copy of their "1999 Video Game Buyer's Guide", which contains an archive of all of their reviews from 1989-late 1998, I can finally put my battered, incomplete copy of that Buyer's Guide to rest.
I myself only have a few (physical) copies of GameFan from 2000, including their next-to-last issue. I LOVED their crystal-clear screenshots and eye-catching layouts, but in retrospect their writing reeked of fanboyism and hype-machine-ism. Still entertaining to read though.
I'm going to have to join that site. I didn't start buy the UK's Saturn Magazine, until it was in its final year of publication.
+1 rep to Aarzak for the link!
Gamevet: haha -that's right "Gamefan".
Thanks for the link Aarzak. I signed up and donated. EGM's were ok. Too bad there are no Gamefan mags on there. I have quite a few japanese from 92-95 that I can upload if they let me.
Yup, GameFan was a legend back in the day, and fun to go through when you're 10, but when you're 25 and read it with a brand new perspective, you see the flaws creep through the surface. Its writing quality was VERY erratic. A magazine that is still good, but not as legendary as I once thought it to be.
Most of the issues aren't 200 pages either, they were actually 100-150-ish. Sorry, I'm a bit of a nit-picker =p
As for the diehardgamefan.com website, the site was absolutely GRILLED on DP a few months ago. People were criticizing the webmaster for blatantly using the GF name to drive up viewership, and that the spirit of the site didn't come close to matching what GF Mag stood up for in the '90s.
GameFan was noted for its genuine love of the game, which is implied by the name. If you wanted something more sophisticated, with consistently high-quality writing, you'd get Next Generation.
I still don't understand why people talk about EGM as if it were ever actually good. I'm not saying it was horrible back in the day, but it was never as good as the other (now defunct) mags of the time, IMO. Even Game Players was better than EGM.
I think Egm stomped GamePro into the ground back then. Not sure about the others mags. I only read Megaplay which I think they also put out.
EGM was more fun to read than the likes of GamePro and Game Players. They had information about upcoming games that wouldn't appear in the pages of GamePro and Game Players for up to 6 more months. They talked about Japanese games. That's what made EGM better.
PS - That Retromags site won't let me download anything.
Did you register for a free account at the site???
Also, free users have a daily D/L limit (via RapidShare downloads) and a small weekly D/L limit via their own downloads, which will usually allow you to download only 1-2 mags before locking up.
The sites also hosts torrents of its magazines at other, private gaming torrent sites which I don't think I can mention here.
"Game Players", from the lone issue (August 1995) that I currently own, seemed like a mix of both EGM & GamePro, with lots of emphasis on humor (they really WERE funny IMO). I wasn't too fond of their reviewing system, with the percentages, "ups and downs" and whatnot. They were alright, better than "GamePro".
I also own an issue of "VideoGames" magazine (September 1995), which is where the now-defunct "Tips & Tricks" spawned off from. From what I've read, the aforementioned revamp of what was once "Video Games & Computer Entertainment" forever ruined the magazine, but its a nice compliment to "Tips & Tricks".
"Next Generation" was always too sophisticated and boring for my tastes. I don't think I ever owned more than 1 or 2 issues of it.
GamePro, despite going toe-to-toe with EGM throughout the 1990's, was ironically amongst the worst of all the mags at the time.
I say:
EGM>>>>GameFan>>Game Players>>>>>>Video Games>>>>>>GamePro.
I agree that Next Generation was ultra-boring. It had less enthusiasm than an instruction manual.
I guess it was an age thing then. I have every issue of Next Gen and was a member of their forums. If you're a fan of the UK magazines Games and Edge, you'll find the substance to be quite simular to what NG offered.
Ultra Game Players magazine was a small step above Gamepro. The humor was beyond stupid and it didn't help to show that gaming was more than a juvenile hobby.
NG>Gamefan>EGM>Game Players>>>Gamepro
I always thought Next Generation became IGN. Except it seems IGN is a little more interested in fun. I have never read an entertaining UK magazine.
