My PLAY 'N' TRADE SNES exploded

Play n' Trade, yes the store, makes their own snes/nes duo consoles, so I bring it home and it feels like a steady piece of equipment.(although the controller ports are a real piece of shit.). So i plug it in and play Mario World, so then i wonder how do i play nes games if there isnt a switch. i turn it on without anything in, and the light that indicates the nes slot turns on, then since there is no game the snes light turns on then after a second, it powers off. the av cord was laying underneath the console I move the cord gently like I do with all my consoles and It made a loud popping sound like someone poked a ballon with a toothpick, and then steam poured out of all of its ventilation shafts. The a-hole sorta sent a zap through my forearm. I was scared and didn't move for a minute because when something like this happens, 101 thoughts race through your head. Did I blow up the TV, did I blow up the VCR, am I electricuted are some thoughts i had. Great thing i have an NES Yobo FC Console to play my NES games, 17daysolderthannes has one and those controller d-pads are like the genesis controllers d-pads.

oh yeah, the Play N Trade FC Dual is a total piece of shit, by far the worst clone system I've ever been exposed to (with a 72 PIN NES slot anyway), everything about it is cheap shit. Buy a revised (jeweled) FC Twin or (preferably) a Retro Duo if you want an SNES clone.

Today I went and got my cash back and found a new(ish) actual SNES with Doom and the Doom cartridge I bought looks like no-one played it, and seeing the way Doom scrolls on SNES is sorta too fluid and wierd and there isn't any textures for the ceiling or floor.

The popping sound was a capacitor blowing it's top. Nice voltage regulation.

Doom on the SNES sucks, its probably the *worst* [wtf, mistake?] version out there (official, homebrews don't count). Yeah, the sound is good, the SNES controller is actually well suited (shoulder buttons for strafing), all the levels and enemies are there, but aside from that its just shit. The graphics are pixelated to hell, the framerate is bad, the lighting is all screwed up, the controls are mind numbingly unresponsive. I beat the 32X version of Doom the first time I played it recently. On the other hand, after playing Doom on the SNES for months when I was younger I never came close because of the terrible gameplay. Doom just wasn't meant for the SNES.

I thought that capacitors were only used in PC's and PC related equipment like printers, oh well, just shows what i know :D

It runs like a PC with 4MB of RAM thats ATTEMPTING to play doom, thats almost the same thing, like someone playing doom on a really weak 286 from 91'.

They're used in almost all electronics: TVs, NES (and other) cartridge games, phones, the works. They work sort of like rechargeable batteries, but not. I think the reason some cartridge based games don't always start up the first time you put them in (assuming they haven't been played in a while) is because the capacitor needs to be charged and it breaks the game until its properly charged and reset. To be honest, I don't even fully understand their function (that's next semester :p ), but I think its to kind of smooth out the pulses of A/C current, but I haven't learned enough about them to really make that call. It sounds like this one got blasted by a short circuit, though.

*please no one chime in here like a know-it-all with a periphrased Wikipedia article when you have no idea either. On the other hand, any degreed Electrical Engineers may feel free to elaborate.

You don't like Electronic's Technicians?

A capacitor charges up to a certain point and then discharges the current. Think of it like a dam that opens up, once the reservoir is full. When the current tries to flow the other direction, the cap blows it's top. You're more than likely to hear that in your lab-time, when some noob puts a capacitor in backwards.

The best practical description I have heard dealing with capacitors is that if you had a battery, a capacitor, and a lightbulb in series with one another, the light bulb would light initially and then get dimmer as the capacitor charged. Once the capacitor was charged, the light bulb would go out. Then, if you removed the battery, the light bulb would light again until the capacitor discharged and then it would dim and go out. In other words, it only flows current if the capacitor is not fully charged or if the charge source no longer ouputs, which means it only works with a varying current. What I don't understand is what function that would serve in an electronic device, unless it just used to convert A/C to D/C current or to smooth out irregular current.

However, yes, putting it in backwards is no good.

However, the use of a capacitor varies from circuit to circuit; What you've described was a capacitor used in a series circuit. Placing a capacitor in a parallel circuit with an inductor, creates a whole different use for the capacitor.

In most electronics circuits, a capacitor has dc voltage applied, combined with a much smaller ac signal voltage. The usual function of the capacitor is to block the dc voltage but pass the ac signal voltage, by means of the charge and discharge current. These applications include coupling, bypassing, and filtering for ac signal.

Oh, Now I see. I thought capactors would be too large for placement in a SNES, let alone any other small electronic device. I didn't know they could differ in size, I've seen capacitors and the ones i've seen are all the same size.

Capacitors can be as small as a resistor, or as big as a coke can.

I can't recall what console picture I had seen, but I recall seeing one with capacitors about half the size of a C-Cell battery.

I've never understood why one would want to purchase a clone system when you could play on the original hardware. Sure they're cheaper and possibly easier to find, but I always hear nothing but problems with them, but who am I to judge? To each his own.
