Zaxxon..WHY?

Okay, am I really going to have to fork out a ton of money to play the original Zaxxon?? I mean this game rocks and it seems the Atari 5200 is the only way I'll be able to get access to this game. I've found a complete in box system for $100 with working controllers :!: but the game goes for that much on ebay:!::!::!: Insanity. Why was this never ported to the 16-bit machines properly?? (Zaxxon's motherbase for 32X isn't the same, I'm sorry, it comes no where near the awesomeness of the original...)

If you have a PS2 just get a copy of Sega Genesis Collection. If you do a few things (like play through a level of one game or another) you unlock the original version of Zaxxon. It plays pretty well and very true to the original. You should be able to get a copy of Sega Genesis Collection for under $20.

Avoid the SG-1000 version with its terrible scrolling, yuck!

You could try emulation as well. The Colecovison had an arcade perfect port of the game.

I wouldn't say it's arcade perfect, but the Colecovision version is pretty good, and better than the 5200 port. I own it, actually.

The 5200 port is a disappointment. IMO, the CV version is too, but it's much easier to acquire.

But getting a working colecovision seems to be an enormous hassle in and of itself...and is it just me or do coleco games have really choppy animation?

I haven't played the CV version in ages, but I do know that the C-64 versions of Zaxxon and Super Zaxxon are pretty decent.

Then again, I've just looked at all 3 on youtube. :(

Wow that game seems REALLY similar in concept to a game on the Sega Master System called "Zaxxon 3D". I wonder if this game ripped off its ideas from that game? Zaxxon 3D had a 3D point of view and was in 3D, but this game takes that concept, adds a pile of shit to the mix which in turn makes the game isometric, which is lame. Zaxxon 3D is better and I think its makers should sue the makers of Zaxxon for ripping them off. Viewpoint is better because it doesn't have any of that climbing BS. Missile Defense 3D is better than both!

I own the "Sega Genesis Collection" for PS2, but was never compelled to play "Zaxxon" on it.

Zaxxon 3D is actually based on the Atari 2600 Zaxxon game.

Zaxxon on the 32X isn't actually a bad game, it's just that the controls are the main sticking point.

Another game where I went "how did they get this on 2600", along with congo bongo (which I thought wasnt that great anyways). I mean they did it with Jungle Hunt. I am a huge 2600 fan.

I want to get Zaxxon for 32X, even if its different.

Zaxxon on the 32x was simply a marketing strategy while labeling the game for the North American release. It was not originally intended to be a Zaxxon game at all. This very same game was actually released as "Parasquad" in Japan and as "Motherbase" in Europe.

You can check out the 2600 version on youtube. It's worse than Donkey Kong.
