Saw this in the used game store while wandering around killing time in a mall while waiting for my alternator to be repaired. Seems cruel with like new copies available for $3 on eBay. :)

maybe there was a mistake or those are old price tags. At least I hope they are. My local Play N Trade has most games (even complete) for $3, with slightly better/more popular ones for $5, and then the super fanboyed games (usually NES or SNES games like Mario, etc.) for more.
Wow, those are relatively high.
My regular place to pick up Genesis games is a little used games store locally owned and operated and even they price reasonably despite the relatively slow and nearly unprofitable (at least around here) business they get. They only price things up if they actually deserve the price, so most titles can be had for $5 complete. Carts are like $3, and rarities usually float up around $15. Not really too bad. Highest price I've seen there is Final Fantasy 3 on the SNES, priced at $35 cart only, but even that seems reasonable because a quick scan of Ebay turns up similar prices.
You should be glad you can get them in a store at all. I haven't found a store that sells old games for a long time. There used to be one in the mall up this way, and it was my sole reason to go there. They moved, sadly. Now I use eBay
I think I need to walk into the local used shop here and with a camera and take some pics. When they ask why I'll tell them I posting used game store with ridiculous prices here.
Could be worse. I've seen a copy of NES Contra - cartridge only with a ripped label and encrusted with many boogers going for $50+ locally. I always wonder if the store owners ever wonder why the game still hasn't sold. They have it in their "rare" case I think.
I walked into some retro store a few months back and they had SMB2, SMB3, and Contra *CART ONLY* for $30 a pop.
I laughed to myself and walked out of there. I have a complete copy of SMB3 (I pieced it together) and I didn't even spend $20 (total...including shipping) for all that.
Bait for the lazy I say.
I've got you all beat, guess what I saw at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge: Mario/Duck Hunt/Track and Field for:...
drumroll...
THIRTY DOLLARS, yes 3 and 0. Yes, you heard it (read it), 30 effing bucks for a game that once sold on the EB Games website for 97¢
And by no means was that a fluke, Sonic 2 was $20 loose (and in none too great shape either) and a few months ago I saw a copy of Metroid for $40 loose. Its MADNESS!
I still can't believe Nintendo charged $20 for SMB1 on the GBA.
One of the most dirt common games on the face of the earth and you have to stones to charge $20 for it?
I'm not really sure who is the bigger criminal, Nintendo or game stores.
That wouldn't happen to have been a branch of Game Trader, would it? That's the store where I took the above picture (the one at Clearview Mall in Meterie). They're a ripoff chain, and I'll always hate the Kenner Esplanade location for literally stealing a huge PS2 dual arcade stick from me, but it is sorta nice that they do weekly crummy video game tournaments.
I buy most of my Genesis stuff at Half-Price Books. There's always someone cleaning out their attic and selling their old games there. I believe I'd bought a mint copy of Eternal Champions, for about $4. My best deal was a PS2 game called "A dog's life" which I'd bought for a $1 and traded it in at Gamestop for $12; it turns out the game was pretty rare.
I have many painful experiences with brick and mortar stores, even though I try to cherish those few here in the UK that actually stock retro games. I have seen copies of games that have been absurdly cheap purely to try and push the games out of the store so that they can make room for more modern rubbish, however more often then not they think that the games are like Templar gold. They keep poor quality games in glass cases and charge a fortune for many games. The worst example was a copy of phantasy Star II - just the bare cart - that was £30. £30! I managed to get the carts of Phantasy Star II, III AND Shining Force II for less then that! ¬_¬
