Läderlappen: Arkham Asylum

I have seen the first screenshots of this game and must say: WOW. This looks awesome. Could it be we finally get to see a dark Batman-game worthy of the franchise?
I am really excited about this game, as I am about the Dark Knight-movie (us Germans have to wait ´till August 21st). It really looks like this game might catch the gritty, dark atmosphere....!

The Leather Lapp. Lapp = racist word against the "same" (sah-mä) people, the minority who lives in northern Sweden, takes care of reindeers and lifts tax money from Swedes with real jobs.

A Lappen is a piece of cloth to clean things in German.

Babelfish tells me it is a rag or a face cloth in English....

So you can translate Läderlappen either to Leatherlap or to Leatherrag, with the latter one being most likely the intended meaning.:D

I respect the Hoff ruled German empire, but the German translation of "Batman" is just dumb.

Well, he never was called that here; he is one of the few superheroes that kept his original name from the start. Läderlappen is from Sweden, but the languages are similar enough that I understand it. We had our share of strange translations in Germany too:

-Spider-Man was Die Spinne (The Spider)
-Hulk was Halk (in order to be spoken like the English Hulk)
-Daredevil became Der Dämon (The Deamon, in order to give the two Ds on his costume a sense)
-X-Men was Gruppe X (Group X)
-The Flash was Roter Blitz (Red Lightning)
-Ironman became Der Eiserne (The Iron One)

And in the very first 3 German Superman-comics (Supermann), Clark Kent was renamed Klaus Kent.

I wonder why there have never been European superheroes....I mean, the US comics were quite successful here too, so how comes Marvel and DC never tried to do European heroes for the audience here?

It had been retconned to Batman again. He was called Läderlappen before the Tim Burton movie AFAIK.

DC've created some minor German superheroes for the series 'Kingdom Come', as well as some Japanese superheroes. Marvel's X-Men series have some European mutant heroes/villains/etc. I remeber flicking thru an issue of X-Men a while back - and found the story was about a moronic justice mutant team from Wisconsin. D: Anything is possible, but I thought the Continent enjoyed more indie comics, manga and Tintin than US superhero bile.

Maybe because it fits with the overall cheesiness of 60's Batman? And the polar bears are in Norway, in Svalbard specifically.

Well, it´s an up and down with superheroes here; superheroes were very popular from the 60ies to the mid 80ies. There was a Superman/Batman combo- series that ran straight almost 20 years in that time....a record in Germany for superheroes. Beside that there have always been various albums and pocket books of superheroes from the late 60ies until the mid 90ies, although interest got lower and lower in the 80ies....there were no monthly DC series for almost a decade then, and Spider-Man was the only ongoing Marvel series monthly.

From 1994 on superheroes made a huge comeback with high quality mags; meaning great translation, hand-lettering (comics had always been lettered in typewriter style before) and big parts with fan mail and background infos; those comics then by far surpassed the originals. But with the market getting flooded with even mediocre series (Image crap like Gen 13 or WildC.A.T.S.) an the dawn of Mangas in original format and uncensored the superheroes were pushed into the freak corner by the beginning of the new millenium again.

Today Marvel-/DC- comics cost more than twice as much as in 2000 and are no competition because of that. It proved unfortunate that Marvel opened a European division of themselves, as they began crap like publishing various Spider-Man-series per month, each requiring the other to understand. That´s not unusual in the US, but here the market is not crazy enough for that; people were used to the ongoing story in ONE series and one-shots and sidestories in special issues. And instead of lowering the price to reach kiddies again they just raised it to compensate the shrinking print numbers.

But back to the topic of your comment: For me and my friends superheroes were the coolest back when we were young. So, they were popular here; I can´t recall us ever playing Tintin or Asterix on the playground, but we did play superheroes, the Turtles, Ghostbusters....all American stuff. I presume Asterix etc were always prefered by a somewhat older audience; adults here always have this attitude that comics need to be big art or intelligent. For me, this is not true: I can enjoy comics by Moebius or Enki Bilal, sure; but I love just turning my brain off and enjoying the naive, stupid superhero-stories.:)

I always wanted to be a comic artist; but unfortunately with the fall of superheroes and the uprising of Manga my own style is no longer demanded. Either I move to the US (which I will never do) or I must hope for another golden age of superheroes that might spawn interest in German-made-heroes of the same style.

I still have a few Marvel UK comic's with Death's Head in them. I always liked that character and the different versions of him

I loved the Turtles and Ghostbusters back when I was a young sprout; recently I've been re-discovering shows from the 90's that I'd watch after school (Freakazoid!, Pirates of Dark Water...). I guess, for me, TV was over-saturated by American cartoons at the time. Freakzoid! is a million times funnier than Azumanga DaiOh! now that I've re-watched it. :D

BTW, if you ever want to get into comics, or make this niche for yourself, self-publish. I've worked with small labels and big (American) publishers, and the latter's just been a pain in the hole, as well as having their editors wringing more un-neccessary reworked art from you (all this for a delayed pittance check valued in dollars). If you can make a book from good quality photocopies/print and sell it in specialist and music stores, or put it up online, you'd be much better off than I was. :(

Except it needs more cyborgs

The Kaiser is raised from the dead and turned into Germany's first cyborg ruler. Nefarious other factions have also figured out how to raise the dead and soon have Zombie Hitler and a Zombie Nazi nation take on Cyber-Kaiser in a battle to end all battles.

Needs more super soldiers, AND NAPALM. More scientific abominations and demons and other occult creatures

Maybe Zebbe can make an appearance.
