MGS2 help

I'm trying to get to the room with all of the hostages and Ames in it, I've looked on guides and it says all I have to do is is push square behind the guard to choke him, so that I can get his face into the retinal scanner, but what winds up happening is for some reason, Raiden feels the need to trip the guard over instead of hold him hostage.

Then I wind up having to beat the ever loving crap out of the guard, knocking him out, when I try dragging him to the retinal scanner, I can't seem to get Raiden to scan his eyes so I can get into the room.

What do I do?

Just that....drag him ti the scanner and turn around so that Raiden and the soldier are both looking towards it.

yeah, you have to apprehend him, but not knock him out. IIRC, it triggers a small cutscene and you have to either hold a button and drag him or just drag him. I cannot remember though I have beaten the game a few times.

This is going to sound stupid, but how do I get a hold of the guard with out knocking him out?

Press the square button WITHOUT pushing the joystick. It must be in the center position for you to drag him to the scanner. I've had that problem many times.

and you have to sneak by him without him seeing you - IIRC, he is standing next to the door and doing the whole scanning thing, so once his cone passes away, you can walk (WALK) and then wall crawl and apprehend him.

I may be mistaken about that, but once you are done with him, you can just hit him in the head with your gun, otherwise they chase you for a while.
