The scaling in the Saturn version is just the same as the arcade. Yes, Saturn scaling in ABII is much much smoother than the software scaling in the X68000, MegaDrive/Genesis, FM Towns versions. It's also smoother than the hardware scaling of the 32X version. But Saturn scaling is no better than the Dreamcast/Xbox ABII in Shenmue II or Dreamcast Yu Suzuki Gameworks Vol 1
1a.) Arcade 'X Board' (100%)
1b.) MAME-Saturn-Dreamcast-Xbox (near 100%)
2.) 32X (close port but half the framerate)
3.) FM-Towns (pretty good translation but no hardware scaling)
4.) X68000 (decent but downgraded from arcade)
5.) MegaDrive/Genesis (nearly same as X68000 just a notch below).
I'll let it be tied with PC-Engine version, overall. PCE version is better in some ways, Genesis version is better than other ways. that's why I'm letting them share #5
6.) all the other massively downgraded console, IBM PC, and other non-PC computer translations (some 8-bit, some 16-bit) that are not even remotely close to arcade in gameplay, sound much less graphics.
I have both the U.S. Saturn Sega Ages (3-in-1) AfterBurner II, Space Harrier, OutRun
As well as the individual Japanese Saturn release, and the Mission Stick which has some problems with the trigger but usually i can get it to work 100% and it's overall the best way to play ABII at home other than MAME, but MAME has too many glitches still.
I love the effort done on the PC-Engine version, the landing sequence is there unlike the MD/Gen version, and even though PCE cannot do real scaling, the software 'scaling' of the landing strip looks & animates wonderfully.
