Apple II question.

In science class today, we were talking on which metals/substances can conduct electricity. So, we had figured out that gold was the greatest conductor period. Then my Science teacher told us that old computers like 80's macs used these, and were found at thrift stores in the early 90's and basically scraped for gold. I asked "Since you mentioned old Macs, did the Apple II have gold components?", he said yes ( and was surprised that anybody in a 9th grade class would know shit about an apple II ). I was thinking on picking up, specifically an Apple II and Commodore 64. Would I have issues finding these without havng to go and get a C64 & Apple II that was used for scrap gold.

...you realise it's the tinyest amounts of gold, on the ends of connectors. Some audio plugs these days are gold plated.

But, did you know that in one cubic mile of sea, there is over £1million worth of gold? The only trouble is that collecting all the gold particles and processing them would take several million.

No, I'm not buying them to use the gold connectors. I WANT TO USE THE COMPUTERS THEMSELVES. I wonder what people got old ( awesome ) computers at thrifts storews for $20 - $50, got tiny amounts of gold, then got about $ 3 for it at a pawn shop and later got pissy because they wasted awesome things to get a little fraction of the overall cost. :p

yeah I know what you were saying. I doubt people scrapped old computers for gold/silver... I reckon more would have been broken down for spare components. It's like what people did in the great depressions, they'd melt down their fantastic ornate faimily heirloom solid silver teapots because they could get more down for 200grams of silver in the shape of a lump than they could for 200g of silver in the shape of an ornate teapot.... Now there are not many 200gram ornate silver teapots left in the world, (or apple IIs :( )

There is a seller at the chuckwagon site that has a lot of computers like those that he intends on listing, and is really looking for a reason to list them.

I just bid and won a Texas Instruments TI 99-4/A (vintge 8-bit computer) for $25 shipped. There was also an Atari 800XL and a few others I can't remember that didn't even sell.

There's also www.vintage-computer.com/vcforum, and there's a marketplace section. There isn't that much there, but they don't have the same zing as a vintage video game place does, regrettable.

And I bet your teacher used an Apple ][ back in the day, and was frustrated along with all the other teachers cause he didn't know how to use it, either.

I had a lot of good memories playing Apple II games. But it also made me hate command line shit too.

I would love to play old school Apple II Number Munchers.

The Apple 2 was a beloved computer to me in its time. I learned to program for the damn thing and even draw "high resolution" graphics on it. I loved that crap, typing line after line of code, running it and hoping it worked. At least it would tell you the line it crashed on. I don't think I could get back into the thing now, so I'll let my good memories remain that way.
