So....who are you supporting?
Obama here. I was undecided until recently, but the thought of Sarah Palin being close to the Presidency scares the shit out of me.

We can't vote for the president here in P.R., but we were allowed to vote in the primaries. I voted for Obama, so I'm hoping to have helped him get elected. I don't have anything against McCain personally, but I think 8 years of a Republican White House is enough, and the Democratic Congress needs a Democratic president to lead it, so it can get on track.
Firstly, I say on behalf of all non-American members of S-16 is that we're foreign and can't vote. :nod: I'm refering to my poll choice and sorry for stating the obvious. :( I agree with you on Sarah Palin, though... :D
It's ridiculous Puerto Rico isn't a state yet. Hawaii is thousands of miles from the mainland and it got statehood.
There's the language thing, but New Mexico has Spanish as an official language and it doesn't seem to be a big deal.
Well, people here can't make up their minds as to what they want, but since Congress says the commonwealth isn't a permanent solution, people would overwhelmingly choose statehood should we have to pick between it and independence. The problem is that Congress is the only one who can truly act on the status issue, and it has no interest in the subject at all.

There is a great desire to solve the issue here, and both U.S. parties thankfully now have the topic in their platforms. The trouble is that neither one commits. PR is under the full power of the Constitution's territorial clause, and only Congress can change its status. We've had plebiscites, legislation submitted in Congress, etc., and nothing's come of it.
I'm guessing the Republicans block it because they know P.R. would send two Democratic Senators to Congress were it granted statehood.
Of course Idaho and Wyoming (two essentially de-populated states) get to send two Republican Senators.
They should have put in the Constitution that if your territory gets over a certain population, you get statehood automatically and spare us the partisan crap.
I live in Arizona and I know McCain is a whackjob. There are sooo many stories in the political circle about his underhanded and hot tempered style it leaves a bad taste in your mouth. He is also pretty old and has a very real threat of skin cancer....and if Palin takes over I can see the country just being further divided than before. ugh.
Obama all the way. I don't agree 100% with him...but by god he's the most interesting and and well spoken presidential canidate I've seen in my lifetime. So I say we give him a shot.
I didn't think much of Obama at first but he's gotten better the more he's been out there. I was a Hillary Clinton voter in the primaries--not because I like her all that much, but I wanted a third Bill Clinton term (this country was MUCH better off in the 1990s than now, even if we had to deal with slimy sex scandals) and that was the closest we were ever going to get.
Those stupid protesters at the RNC should have just blended in with the crowd and tried to start up an "eight more years!" chant. I'm not particularly thrilled by Obama, but he's a lot better than those scummy McCains and his Dark Ages VP.
Why the bloody hell am I not on that list for voting for next President? I demand this oversight is corrected immediately before I start calling for more bannings!

Would be interesting to see how much money you can earn with that...at least 4 years ago many Europeans would have paid a lot to have a chance to get rd of Bush, there never was such an unpopular American president before.^^
About McCain/Palin...well, he does seem to be very much on the bush-line, so I would not vote for him. But I do find it funny how he pulled Palin as an ace now that Obama and not Hillary Clinton is his opponent...I bet if Hillary had become the Democrat´s candidate he would have presented a black guy instead.^^ He seems to be hoping to pull female voters onto his side now...and she is relatively young, maybe to distract from him being a mummy.
Obama on the other side...well, he is (half-)black, which seemed impossible a few years before, and he kind of knows how to make a show and get everyone excited. I am not sure what is behind that show though. So I hope he really has a decent plan of what to do once he is president and the time for waving flags and wearing funny red-white-blue hats is over.
See, his age makes me fear him more with Palin as his VP.
At least he didn't pick Joe Lieberman. If he did I would have finally had to get <i>Night Trap</i> just because he hates that game so much he had a Senate hearing on it.
