I'm wasting my vote on a third party. I live in California, and our electoral votes are a foregone conclusion. Therefore, I see no reason to force myself to vote the lesser of two evils. If we didn't have the electoral college, or if I lived in a "battleground" state, I would vote Obama. McCain has made some absolutely ridiculous statements, such as claiming that Iran is training al-Qaida. Having someone that ignorant with their finger on the launch button is just scary. And Sarah Palin is extra scary. We've had 8 years of a stupid president, I think it's time to elect a smart person for a change.
It's really hard to believe that California was the home state of both Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan, given how liberal it is today.
Reagan, was after all from Illinois not California...he moved here.
The Republicans controlled California unopposed from around the end of world war one until the early 1960's. there were one or two crazy governors here and there but they ran it solid. Which is why they are a dead party here now. Too much time of one party rule is always a disaster, as the democrats are proving here too. They've really FUBARd the state like crazy.
Tell me about it. In elections for City Council and Mayor where I live, Satan (D) would defeat Jesus Christ (R) if an election were held between them and those were the letters by their names.Quote:

Which means no competitive elections, which makes the city government beyond corrupt. One of our former mayors used city money (I kid you not) to get a penis implant, and our school board chairman was found 2 years ago posting inappropriate photos on a gay dating site even though he opposes sex ed saying it would lead to "deviant behavior".
I generally lean Democrat but we NEED Republicans here just to make things competitive.
I don't think that's why they're a dead party now. Our energy crisis from circa 2001 is still bitterly remembered by many, and lots of people blame the Republicans for it (and quite rightly, I might add). Also the California Republican Party is way out of step (for California) on the issues of the environment, gay rights, and abortion. Notice how the only two Republicans to be elected to statewide office in the last however-many years have both bucked their party on those issues (but are very Republican otherwise).
In California, all local/municipal elections are nonpartisan. Which pretty well fixes that problem. Not that we're completely problem-free, but we (almost) always have competition.
I think Europe would be a cool 51st state and maybe Japan could be state #52. Puerto Rico could be state #53 despite the fact that I hate the name of the place. All names should be English since English is the BEST language EVAR. The rest of the world would be state #54 and the moon would be the 55th state. I bet Nader would be governor of the moon.
Mars could be the 56th state, and DOCTORRONPAUL could be the Governor of Mars.
Sounds good. Joe Redifer '08!
No he lives in SF I think...
This election is a big deal for me, since I am in the armed forces.
Anyway, I'm more keen towards Obama. But the fact he has Merrill Mcpeak, the USAF Chief of Staff from 1990-1994 is a co chair kind of has me worried. If he Mcpeak was made the next Secretary of Defense... then the US Military is, well... if you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything nice at all. Go Wiki Merrill Mcpeak, and it doesn't hold back.

We need this guy in charge.
Nope, I can't say I know much of anything about LA politics. But in SF, where there are practically zero Republicans, it's not really about partisanship. "One party rule" is beside the point; the point I was making is that there is still competition even if one party rules the roost, because candidates of the same party compete with each other and with independents. In SF, a registered Green got 47% of the vote for mayor (and was outspent 10 to 1). On city councils and other local positions in the Bay Area, I find that people vote based on the issues.
any place where the green party wins 47% of the vote is a place I want to be far away from. If I lived in a place like that, I'd still drive my 1981 Chevy Silverado with its two twenty gallon tanks and 6 mpg. In fact I would leave it running all the time hooked up to a gas pump just to pollute. I would also burn leaves in my yard and burn all my trash in my front yard just to stick it to the man.
I'd also build an outhouse made of glass panes and when the tank/hole got full I'd burn all that too.
L.A. is getting bad enough with it's up and coming everywhere in sight smoking ban...if this passes, people won't even be allowed to smoke on sidewalks which is insanity.
Fascists...Hitler passed the first anti-smoking laws...now I know where all the lefties get it from.
They claim it is to make the city look cleaner/healthier and protect people from 2nd hand smoke. If they wanted to do that, then they should ban the homeless from LA. They sleep everywhere, parks, sidewalks etc. It's outrageous. I demand to be protected from 2nd hand poverty.
If I lived in SF I'd burn the homeless in my front yard too... :D
and don't give me any of this bleeding heart "if you were homeless blah blah blah" nonsense. If I ever get to the point where I'm homeless, sleeping at the bus stop and urinating near the payphone then I will put a bullet in my head or jump off the freeway overpass just to help out my fellow man.
I guess I don't need to mention that I'm voting for McCain :O
