Also, keep in mind there are 3 models of disc drive, the disc scratching may be specific to one disc drive and there is no way to know which one you have without opening the system and looking. Hope to god you don't have the Hitachi, those are the most unreliable and failure prone.
in my experience PS2 problems are all from user abuse. Every PS2 I've fixed was damaged from physical abuse (read dropping) or from getting obscenely nasty to the point it obstructed the laser, tray mechanism, or simply rusted/corroded the internals. I have had my PS2 since a year after launch and am happy to report absolutely zero problems with it.Quote:

The PS2 had a different problem. Overtime you had to either adjust the tray as the laser couldn't focus on the disc as effectively on the disc (you can clearly see this when the lid is off as the light from the laser appears on the opposite side of the media/disc). Reading CD games (blue discs) was the first thing to start showing problems, then regular DVD games. I've fixed a few friends unit temporarily, but they eventually fail completely. Watching movie does put additional time on the module, shortening the life span that's already premature. They fixed the issue with the slim line PS2s.

Gosh, I suppose that if you tally up everything you COULD buy extra for the XBox, you could come up with around $300. But look at it this way: if you bought the 360 arcade and then purchased a harddrive separately, you're a moron (that's "you" in general, not specifically). You mentioned controllers earlier. I don't know why; I don't know of a console that shipped with two controllers since the SNES, so there's another $60 that you can deduct from your $300 in necessities. And as for the XBox live account; to download games and videos, you only need a silver, which is free. To actually play online costs $50 a year.
Yes, if you want extra controllers, fancy-pants cables and additional memory, you're going to have to pay more, but this has been true of every major system since the PSX.
