Don't Forget Decap-Attack!
Hmm maybe I'm having such a hard time with this because combat racing games should not be lumped with the sim racing games. I think that based on what you've shown Virtua Racing is arguably the BEST F-1 game on the Genesis, and a contender for best sim racer overall.
How the game compares to other formats doesn't matter, it's how comparable the game is to other MD racers that matters, and I don't see that many other Mega Drive racers can be favourably compared to Virtua Racer in the respect of graphics, handling or the general feeling of speed.
I never realised this list would be so damn annoying, I've cut it down to 110 games now, but every game I remove now is one that I thought would obviously absolutely have to be in a MD top 100
1. Thunder Force IV, Gaiares, Musha, Eliminate Down + Panorama Cotton and Battle Mania 2
2. 4, (1), 2, 3
3. I like no.2 a lot more. But make room for both.
4. Columns 3, Puyo Puyo 2, sokoban, klax, Lost Vikings, puzzle & action, Ecco 1-2, Pac-Attack, Doki Doki Penguin Land (pretty much the same as the 8-bit version though)
5. Micro Machines, Road Rash 2
6. Mediocre. I liked the prequel better.
7. NHL '94-96, Dodgeball: Kuy Kid, ATP Tour Tennis, High School Soccer: Kunio Kun, Tiny Toons: Acme All-Stars
I posted the other versions of Virtua Racing, to show how much the MD version isn't like the arcade game, or even the ports on most of the other systems. The Saturn and 32X versions of Virtua Racing don't even have 30fps and the Genesis version barely has a dozen FPS. The arcade game was/is amazing and fun because of how smoothly it runs and plays.
I'd never really thought of the Genesis or Saturn versions of Virtua Racing as fun. I'd thought that maybe it was because of how old the original game was and how far racing games had come. It wasn't until I'd played a perfect version of Virtua Racing on the PS2 compilation, that I'd realised why the other 2 versions just sucked.
I'd recommend every one of those racers I'd posted above the VR comparisons, over Virtua Racing on the Genesis.
You see, that's the point why there are some people who dig/dug VR for the Genesis.
Not everybody at that time had access to the arcade (myself included), so we were all amazed when VR came out. We would mock our "enemy" SNES fanboys and laugh over how Starfox looked so slow in comparison to VR, and how VR looked so much cooler.
I loved it back then, and it holds a special place in my gaming heart. However, tks to your post, I'm now out to get that gorgeous PS2 port! :)
