New Generation Shmups

I have a question regarding the dominant consoles out there today (the Wii, the Xbox 360 and the PS3). I own the last one and don't know much about the first 2, except the fact that the PS3 hasn't got any shmups released in retail yet.

As you all might have noticed by now, I'm a shmup nerd, and I'm fairly disappointed with my PS3, to the point of abandoning my hopes with it and shifting to the competitors. I know of some shmups that were released for both the Wii and the Xbox 360, but I would like to have a complete list before diving into another system.

So that's it... What shmups were already released for the Wii and the Xbox?
I mean retail only, not PSN or XBLA. And I don't care about handhelds.

Xbox has tons of original shmups and ports of games like Ikaruga and Rez. Wii has tons of 8/16-bit shmups, as well as a few new ones like Star Soldier R and Gradius Rebirth. For new stuff, 360 is definitely the way to go.

The Wii has a bunch of shooters, but the only 2 modern releases I know of are Star Soldier R and Gradius Rebirth(the latter being a Japanese-exclusive). You should get them both, but I think Gradius Rebirth is superior.

I often find mysef forgetting how few SHMUPS are available for the PS3, mainly because I play all my PS2 SHMUPS on the PS3...anyways, if you haven't already, try Everyday Shooter for the PS3 - also, Superstardust HD (both are PSN games).

You really should care about XBLA and PSN. Triggerheart Exelica is out on XBLA and is a fantastic shmup.

Thing is, I'd expect most shmups are really too small / simple to be sold at retail. There are a few exceptions, but they're mostly downloads.

Actually, there's another original shooter for the Wii. I forgot what its called - its almost like f-zero . . .

Yeah, there are a couple others - Protothea, which is a really boring Geometry Wars ripoff, and Gyrostarr (probably the one you're thinking of) where you have to destroy enough enemies before you've travlled a certain distance or you die; it's based around speed but like 45 of the 50 levels are slow, multiplayer is fun though.

Also, I should note that Star Soldier R isn't a full game, but merely a "caravan" game, with a two-minute mode and a five-minute mode. I love it, but it's an acquired taste.

Word up. Super Stardust HD is AWESOME, Shame on all of you for not mentioning Geometry Wars, which is on XBLA and Wii. The XBLA sequel is incredible.

XBLA is full of great shooters:

- 1942 Joint Strike
- Aces of the Galaxy
- Every Extend Extra Extreme
- Geometry Wars 1 & 2
- Ikaruga
- Mutant Storm Empire & Reloaded
- Omega Five
- RezHD
- Triggerheart Exelica
- Xevious

There has to be something there you'd like. Omega Five plays a lot like Forgotten Worlds, and GW and E4 are point-driven adrenaline frenzies.

Oh crap, I missed the "retail only" thing. In the Wii's case, there's:

Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved (not quite a port, not quite a sequel of the original game)
Castle of Shikigami III
Blast Works: Build, Trade, Destroy (remake of Kento Cho freeware game Tumuki Fighters, comes with ports of his other games plus a fully-featured level/ship/enemy/bullet editor and the ability to trade your creations online, this game goes for cheap and is an absolute steal)
Ultimate Shooting Collection (Dreamcast shmups Karous, Chaos Field and Radilgy all on one disc, US release in a month or so, until then there's only a Jap release)

then if you take Gamecube games into account, there's also:

Ikaruga
Castle of Shikigami II (Jap-only)
the remake of Star Soldier (also Jap-only)

I actually purchased this game locally for about $12 and promptly sold it because A) shooters aren't my thing and B) I knew what people would pay for it on eBay.

However, I recently downloaded it from XBLA because [prepares for ridicule] I thought the light/dark mechanic would make the game more accessible than the average twitch shooter.

And yeah... I'm considering taking a look at the downloadable games. Even though I'm not fond of having them virtually instead of physically.

You guys need to play "The Red Star" for PS2 (before it costs as much as MUSHA to get your hands on a copy). Beat 'em up+bullet hell shooter=holy hell where has this game been all my life. Completely original, I've never played anything else like it, and its technically a budget title.

SHMUP's will probably be DLC for the most part from now on. I did hear that a DoDonpachi game might be getting a physical release for the 360 but as a PS3 owner I'm pretty disappointed with what's been offered in the way of SHMUPS. The 360 got so much good stuff all we got was 1942: Joint Strike, which is really fun and well worth the 10 bucks but still how much does it take to port some of the games the 360 got?

Oh, crap, this reminds, me, I didn't mention Thunder Force VI! The game is only getting a Japanese release date so far, for October 30 exclusively on the PlayStation 2. Why couldn't TecnoSoft(or whoever is making Thunder Force VI) have this on the Wii or something?

Could someone explain me why it's being released in a console whose life cycle is at its very end?

[ BTW, I know the PS2 is still sellin' like water in some places... ]
