I got basic cable recently, along with internet in my room, but I share the TV for cable with internet and it is pissing me off. How can I connect my cable signal to the PC and watch it that way.
And I've seen USB adaptors and PCI cards, but do I need to use the remote? Or can I use my own HTPC remote, as the software is customizable as I please.
Get a good PCI card with a common tuner chip on it and you should be able to use custom software and your own remote. Get a cheap USB one and you may not be able to. You can get HD capable cards on PCI-e 1x slots also now but of course they cost much more.
I'm no expert on TV Tuners so I can't say whats best for what. Just do lots of research and don't buy one at random if you want it to work with other programs like you do.
Be sure to get a card that supports HD due to the impending February abandonment of analog cable signals and air transmissions.
I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the digital switchover does not affect cable. They can continue to push whatever they want over their lines.
Technically it's only over the air that's affected by the transition. For example, my local cable company will continue to forward analog.

So if I have BASIC cable with a coaxial. it'll work after February 2009? I can get a PCI Tuner card REALLY cheap here... Curious here. :)
Yes, it should be. I'm shocked no one has actually watched and listened to the commercials.
They keep saying "OVER THE AIR" over and over again. And then people ask, "is cable affected?".
BUT! As always, cable companies own their wires, they can do whatever they want. Just make sure your cable company hasn't changed plans. My cable company keeps reminding that their wires will have analog.
I will call them up... Where I live is old as hell and not really worth switching over it seems :/

Wouldn't they free up bandwitdh and be able to get more channels down the cable? If so I'm sure they would EVENTUALLY switch to digital only at some point in the next few years.
I will only be living here for a few years at the most... and then I get $$$ for living off base, and trust me i want to live off base.
I doubt Comcast is going to go digital only. I live in the DC area, and I doubt most sane people have the $$$ for digital.
