Why Soul Calibur 4 is Unnecessary....

The reason why Soul Calibur 4 is completely unnecessary is because from what I have observed there is no real difference from the last 3. The only ones that are valid is SC1 (DC) and the SC3 (PS2).

All else can go take a flying leap!

The reason I bring this up is because yesterday I was playing SC 1 on Dreamcast and I said to myself

"Jumper Gidders! This game was Swell"

I then started to think of the failure which was the Second and forth one and then a cynical wave swept over me.

How can a game stagnate so badly over the years and yet amazingly people continue to purchase it?!

What I have noticed from the review movies of SC 4 is that they have kept everything relativley the same hence! the stagnation. The only thing that is different is that its in HD and the levels in which you battle have NPC hanging around them (Birds walking around, Spectating Lizardmen, etc)

So in closing, Save thy money, play the Soul Caliburs games that you already own and feel free to gloat everytime you defeat a friend.

Thank you, I recently got Soul Calibur (DC) and It really is the SAME game since 99 ( With Better Graphics and some added chracters ) . One thing that is great about about SC is that atleast they aren't getting Guitar Hero Syndrome, OK LETS NOT USE DOWNLOADABLE CONTENT, LETS SHIT OUT 7 OF EM IN 2 WEEKS AND CHARGE FULL PRICE FOR 20 of 80 SONGS YOU WANNA PLAY!

Lets list the games.

Guitar Hero

Back in Spring of this year (2008) we got thes games all within 3 months.

Then we have

Guitar Hero 3

(Upcoming Guitar Hero 4)

Ok so thats 7(8) games within the past 3 years, and 3 of them were within 6 months of each other.

NOTE : I LIKE GUITAR HERO, I JUST DON'T NEED TO PLAY IT ON MY FUCKING VCR AND MICROWAVE. (and have the VCR and microwave ports within the same week.)

The same could be said for:
every madden since 1998
every NHL, NBA, MLB etc since 1998

The graphics get better and the players change, but so what?

Ehh I see what your saying but some people aren't going to be happy either way. Change the formula, you get the whole "They forgot their roots/butchered a franchise" argument. Keep the same proven formula you get people complaining say that its "stagnant and redundant."

I agree with you on SCIV, however it IS a fighter, and I don't really think you can change it up a whole lot more in this day and age. Halo is another story, as its a game which (at least to me) is the epitome of "If you played one, you played them all."

If we're really gonna go there, you could argue that nearly every sequel and 90% of games built off a popular engine are unnecessary as they don't bring much to the table that wasn't already there.

I went from SC2 to SC4. What a joke. I can't believe they charged $60 for this game. It feels like it's missing features. I'm very disappointed. Also, the tower is lame compared the story/map of SC2. :(

So Namco pulled a Capcom on gamers.

Oops too late! Namco has just announced that they will be offering Yoda for PS3 and Vader for the 360 for download soon! The "exclusivity" of each game for each system are not exclusive anymore! Degradation in value!

Soul Edge/Blade was pretty good.
Soul Calibur was awesome
Soul Calibur 2 was ridiculously awesome.

... And then I stopped playing them.

I hear in the new one though, Vader is OP yet skillfully balanced, and Yoda's another "freak" like Gon in Tekken 3, totally unbalancing the game due to his height.

Mmmm...Ridiculous license abuse for money.
Such is the current industries widespread downfall into mediocrity.

Soul Calibur 4 was great (cool new characters-yoda!!!) and best of all continuing awesome graphics and finally online play. SC3 was far too hard didn't seem very balanced. Like marvel vs capcom 2. argh.

Although generally speaking I agree with you, most of these games do offer a slow evolution of the series. Ok, they whore out the same type of game each year, but if you can skip a few years the features inbetween can be enjoyed. :ok:

i think the special characters detract from the olde worlde feel of the game,as did that bloody stupid necrid/spawn/heihachi mistake.stick with sc on dc , it rocks.

I have to counter the argument where someone said that Capcoms SFII is the same stagnating franchise like SC. I don't believe this at all. SF had a clear, yet slow evolution.

SFII, Alpha, EX, SFIII, SFIV. All of which is different then the other. So yes, they had SFII on life support for quite a while.

I just played SCIV and its even worst they I thought. It seems that its not only a stagnating mess with better graphics BUT it has devolved in gameplay. Meaning that the gameplay has degenerated into a slower version of even the SCI (DC) version. They completely forgot about the fluid combo style of SCIII and further fell into the bottomless abyss of other failed franchise sequels.

I guess you'd have to ask Tekken, Dragon Warrior, Madden, Dead or Alive, etc. to find out. Games are as bad as Hollywood when it comes to sequels.

SC3 was far and away the worst of the series, with SC4 ahead by a significant margin and SC and SC2 at the top of the list. SC4 fixed a lot of what was wrong with SC3, and looks gorgeous, but the fact that online and offline play are so fundamentally different is what kills it for me.

What was so bad about SCIII? There are no examples here. Throw me a bone tell me what you think was bad about it. I thought it was the most fluid but they did screw up Raphaels character.

I'll be picking up Soul Cal 4 when the retail price hits $30 (or perhaps less).
I like the series, and appriciate the online play.

Soul Cal 1 was great, but when sequels are released, I tend to get used to the extra moves and polish that they ad.
To me, it's about as awkward as trying to do Smash Bros: Brawl crap in the original N64 game.

I have to correct myself though on my last few posts.

I just played SC2 and SCIII after making my last comment and I have to say that SC2 is much more fluid than SCIII but I have stick to my guns here and say that I would rather have SCIII than SC2 just because of the upgrades in the Characters, Graphics, and some fighting engine tweaking.

The game balance was completely broken. They wanted to make the game more "fun," and they decided to accomplish this by making certain characters more powerful even though they already had other advantages, like Xianghua. In the hands of even an intermediate player, Xuanghua could be ridiculously overpowered. And then there's the Create-A-Character feature which also had some very questionable balance with its exclusive fighting styles.

SC4 has vastly improved balance, very pretty graphics, and a decent online mode (as long as you're not playing against Kilik, Astaroth, or Cervantes). There are still many balance problems, sure, but at least now they have a game that's updatable and revisions can be issued in the future.
