Games actually have to be installed onto the consoles. You know, the whole reason I stopped playing computer games was because of all the constant needs to update, install new crap etc. etc. etc. etc.
Games are quickly losing their 'pick up and play' quality. Which is what console gaming is all about. I already have a computer, I don't need another one. Nor do I need a blue-ray player etc.
I just wanna play video games man...and with my other stuff, I don't need to update it, register it, etc.
I agree with you on your last point, as most modern games require a fairly sizeable commitment of time.
As far as the internet is concerned, it's not as necessary as you make it out to be. Playing online obviously requires an internet connection, but you don't really NEED to do that.
Now, to get the "pick up and play" games that you like (which are available through all three consoles), you're obviously going to need to download them and load them onto your system.
Its worth it for me, though. I actually like the "all-inclusiveness" of today's gaming systems.
But it would take more time to have to go out and get the game from a store than just downloading it from the comfort of your own home. The only thing that irks me about downloadable games is that I don't actually own a physical copy, but what're you going to do.
I'm going to hold onto my Genesis/Sega CD, Atari 7800 and Saturn till the day I die thats what. I'm going to go into the future kicking and screaming!
Your loss I suppose.
You are truly a savage creature, John Spartan
Im not against any of these new Gen consoles, they don't really interest me all that much but some games look cool. I agree with Tanegashima about a lot of the points he made about just picking up a game off the shelf. It kinda turned me off when I watched my brother hook up his 360 to the internet and he had to install a bunch of crap to get some game running.
The thing about new systems that is unappealing to me the most and prevents me from getting into them is that in a couple years down the road they will become obsolete. I don't want to shoot my load on a ps3 when in just a few years there may come out another system that makes it look way primitive in comparison. Everything that people boast about in these new games primarily graphics and shit like that will become obsolete just a few years down the road. I never stopped playing my dreamcast and my pc engine and various other sega systems. They have a nice classic feel to them. I have more fun trying to beat my high score on galaga than I do when I go to someone's house and they are shooting people in high def online. One day when Im making over 50 G's a year I will get the new systems, but for now.. Actually strike that, if I ever make any money I am just going to start buying classic arcade machines. I was so so close to buying this great condition donkey kong arcade machine just a week or so ago. I really don't have a whole lot of room in my current apartment, but I would definitly squeeze it in there. I would like a good street fighter arcade machine for when people come over. I just want one really good machine.. Or maybe just two. Fuck thats how my genesis habbit started, just a few classic games then im done. Fast forward 3 years and I have hundreds of games for crazy systems.
Sorry back on topic. Yeah alien hominid was a fun little game. Definitlymetal slug inspired which is a good thing, need more of those. Fallout 3 I will admit that I wanna play when I get the opportunity. Might make a good X-mas gift for my brother.
Has anyone played Fallout 3 yet? How is it?
Hey, I'm not bashing the new stuff. I'm just saying its not my cup of tea anymore. Pretty soon computer games and console games will be one and the same. Not for me.
Some of games I've seen on the 360, PS3, Wii look FANTASTIC, the few I've played are really really excellent games. They simply don't hold my interest. Many people would disagree with me.
I will admit, however, when I was in Denver I picked up a DS...that thing is pretty damn awesome. What swayed me was I saw Impossible Mission (one of my all time favorite games) for it! I couldn't believe they re-released it. So I grabbed that, Sonic Rush, Contra 4, and N+ . I love that little DS. I'm not much into hand-helds, but it's pretty awesome.
Then again, they really don't make games like those for the big home consoles either.
N+ is also one of the XBLA games I have.
If only the DS received games like Patapon and Loco Roco, there would be no reason for me to own a PSP
Metal Slug anthology was really pulling at me...I almost got a PSP for that reason alone...
