Yeah I got a Genesis 3. Like it or hate it... hell you may even love it. Watch my review! I think I did a good job showing its weaknesses BUT it still had its place for the affordable price it was made available at.

Something you ought to know, is the case styling was modeled after the abandoned Neptune case. Love that case style, and would love to have just a mold of it.

it was cool because it was so cheap, but if you're buying used its not really even worth looking into since a high def model 1 is either the same price or cheaper and offers much more functionality and overall quality, not to mention that beast makes you feel like you're holding something special :) . Model 1 Genesis is the Laserdisc of the Genesis lineup.
Brilliant solid Review man!....Very informative and you have good historical and technical knowledge......Btw, thanks for your comments regarding my Genesis 3 / 32X modification and others....I'm now almost for certain that only the first revisions of the Genesis 3 system are capable to be compatible with the mods....Although, You made it sound so easily, but it sure was a pain you know where getting the 32X system to work properly... :)
Im bidding on one on EBAY, i already have a Genesis 1 so i dont care that it doesnt support 32x or sega cd. Considering 95% of the time i play genesis games i think it makes great sense.Saves a ton of space and i like the design.My only concern is the audio.
is there a documented way to tell which version you have? Or be able to ask the question of a seller, how to tell which ones would have stereo/mono?
Great Video. I'm not a big fan of the Genesis3 though I agree that its still alot better than crappy clones. I also enjoyed your other videos which I have watched a various times in the past.
that's a fair review, fairly interesting too. I've just gotten my first gen3, and am really looking forward to it.
well outside of superficial preferences, there is the advantage of easy modding. Svideo looks like a breeze. The gen3's are also usually low-milage units, so finding one which is clean isn't as much of an issue. most of the older genesis units work, but often look like they've been sitting in a warzone.Quote:

S video isn't a good idea for the Genesis, it screws with some programming tricks and causes incorrect image displays. One example is shadows/transparency effects achieved by a series of parallel vertical lines works fine with RF and Composite but just appears as lines with S-video. I found a High Def model 1 (the very first model 1s, it has TMSS but I imagine its no newer than 91, probably from 90) and it looks like it came right out of the box. I bought it on eBay for $20 shipped. You just have to scan eBay a little bit, also, you would be surprised what a little cleaning can do. I'd rather clean up a system a little bit than deal with terrible sound and incompatibility with Sega CD and 32X.Quote:

Unfortunately I haven't got the chance to write a tutorial, but for some people I really wouldn't bother to get the 32X compatibility done on the Genesis 3...Mainly, because it could be a bit complex for some and the model 1 and 2 are out there to do the job just fine....But if you are a hardcore modder, then, I'll strongly recommend it, you'll re-gain the 32X compatibility game play as well as the Virtua Racing, Game Genie and for the most part even the Sega Master converter compatibility...All within the compact design of the Genesis 3 system...Quote:

I have a Genesis 3 my cousin gave me but I have to screw some of the inner platting together.
Let me ask you, MN12BIRD, how does Virtua Racing behave on your Genesis 3? Does it show the TMSS screen and then crash, or does it not load at all(black screen from the moment you turn on the unit)?
@OoXxXoO - VA2 Genesis 3s ARE compatible with the mods, but they're harder to find, as the Sega 315-6123 ASIC in them was never used in any other revision of the Genesis. Virtua Racing WILL work on the unit(I came close to getting it working before the damn thing went down the crapper), and Sega Master System backwards compatibility IS possible(discovered it by accident; I shorted 2 pins together in the Genesis 3, and ended up getting a blue screen when the unit would be turned on, cartridge or no cartridge. Breaking the short made the system revert to Genesis mode, so I'm quite certain that the VA2 Genesis 3 has a Sega Master System mode; I will post a theory on my Genesis 3 ASIC thread now to show this).
Any Reason to get a Genesis 3 when i already own a Model 2 ?
