I want one with the metal plates that atttach to the Genesis cart slot so the system won't get damaged. Also do the complete ones come with a link wire for the Genesis 1? That is the kind of Genesis I have at the moment.

Yep. A complete 32X package comes with the 2 metal plates for the Genesis 1, the connector cable for the Genesis 1 and the other cable that links the Genesis 1 to the 32X (2 connector cables altogether), AV cables, AC adaptor, the 32X unit itself (obviously), and a spacer for use with the Genesis 2. I love the 32X!! I wish it got way more support...
They are certainly rare here in my area. I have seen one in the last five years.
If you're interested, I have a complete in box one, with everything you need including metal plates etc.
I also have games if you're interested. Just let me know.
I thought the general consensus was that the grounding plates were laughably senseless FCC nonsense...
You're better off just finding one with a model 2 genesis in a lot than trying to scour out the crap to get it running on a model 1. Then you can be just like me and have every freakin 32X game run great except the best one: Knuckles Chaotix.
There's an abundance of them on ebay ranging from $20 to $100. I have an extra I'm going to be selling soon. Still in the box with everything you need including the electromagnetic shield plates you're asking about and all hookups (yes, even the 1-32 DIN adapter and pass-thru cable). If interested, drop me an email for more info (pics and price and such).
Let me ask this: Is the 32x cable a straight through 9-pin mini-din?
I have heard that if you don't get the cable the thing sits and gathers dust. Is this the right cable? mini-din 9 straight through?
Nathan
It is indeed a 9 mini pin din connector cable...*BUT*....like I have mentioned many times before, you only need 8 pins out of it instead of the actual 9 (minus the 5Vcc pin line)...The official Sega 32X connector cable only has the 8 required pins....If anyone plugs a regular 9 pin cable between the Genesis/32X, you'll experience some issues because of the 5Vcc pin, nevertheless the extra pin can easily be removed...
And yes, without the patch connector cable, the whole combo is worthless....
Not to make anyone jealous, but I actually OWN a complete Sega 32X, patch cable plus Genesis 1 adapter, power brick and metal plates plus Genesis 2 spacer and that weird dongle that plugs into the Sega CD slot. That was the only 32X I had ever seen in my area(the first!).
I'd say that, yes, they're rare, but even rarer are complete 32X units that are inexpensive(I paid mine 25 bucks!). I remember when I was still searching for a 32X that some of them on eBay were going for something like $70 plus, shipping included to Canada.
I have a complete one too :) I forgot to mention that weird dongle thing that plugs into the SegaCD slot since I NEVER use that. What the hell is that thing for anyway??
The Sega CD Dongle/Terminator is for some Genesis models that are unstable with the 32X, but if if you have a Sega CD you won't/shouldn't have no problems.
My 32X that I bought brand new in '96 didn't come with one, nor did it have any problems with my Genesis.
Yeah, I had to use that plug on some of my Genesis 2s as they'd crash after a few seconds without it. It's for improved stability of the unit, for whatever reason. What does the 32X have with some Genesis units and the Sega CD expansion slot?
Dongle? I don't remember mine coming with anything like that. Any one have pics? I am curious now.
When I plugged my Sega CD in it actually made things worse. That side cap nonsense is a bunch of BS, all my games (except Chaotix, though I haven't determined the cause yet) work fine without the stupid little sidecar attachment.
Oh, and complete 32X units are hella common on eBay. Every other 32X auction is CIB or even sealed as there was probably lots of unsold stock back in 95~96 from when Sega prematurely pulled the plug, much like the Dreamcast as Sega prematurely pulled the plug on that as well. In the real world, 32X units are pretty uncommon (unless you live in a very tech heavy area) and the only one I've ever seen locally is the one I have right now, which I dug out of a big pile of non-working games and it just happened to have the A/C adapter and patch cable plugged in. The only problem is that I had to bend a pin on the patch cable back to get it to work.
