so is this the legendary SCPH-1001?

Is there more than one version with the separate audio/video jacks on the back? Also, is that the laser that everyone says was poorly designed? The sticker on the bottom that says "refurbished" gives me hope that maybe this one was one of the ones with the bad laser and was fixed with a better laser and re-sold. I have to say, Tony Hawk 2 never sounded so good.

What's so special about the SCPH-1001 model. I hear people talking about it, but the never get into specifics

supposed to have really good audio, there are articles claiming it is on par with a $6000 CD player. I don't think its THAT good, but it seems pretty good and at $20 its good enough for me. I just like owning original versions of systems, it makes me happy :) .

If you like owning original versions then maybe you should try to own an SCPH-1000. The real original Playstation with the s-video connection and NTSC-J only...

well, I don't mean ABSOLUTE first necessarily. Besides, the only difference between the "0" or "1" at the end is the region, that's all. Plus, NTSC-J games don't seem like they would be very accessible...

anyone know if this looks like it has any "revised" parts? From what little I can find it said the first ones (the bad ones) were all plastic and the later ones were part die-cast (which this one appears to be). I am far from a PSX hardware expert and really can't distinguish one model from the next besides whether or not there are A/V jacks on the back.

The lasers always wear. They don't use a metal shaft for the laser, just a plastic thing.. Of course, plastics wear down easily.

well of course any laser will wear to some extent, the question here is if this one is more wear resistant than the initial batch of 1001's since its been Sony refurbished at some time in the past.

edit: wow dude, it was manufactured in September 95! This is so weird, I always end up with launch systems whenever I buy used. My Dreamcast was also made during its launch month in September 99. I wonder when that XBOX I just bought was made...

PSX actually is 1994, technically. ;)

In the picture it's the plastic rails. It'll fail prematurely sometime.

is it true I can swap drives from any ol PSX? I might be sneaky and do that :twisted:

And btw, 1000 had S-Video jacks. Where I believe the 1001 does not because America didn't really have it yet.

Do you mean the black thing thats encasing the laser ? I don't think thats plastic. I have an original PS1 and and portable one w/ screen. I've touched those before because I cleaned after I got them used. It's not really plastic, it's really a very thin form of tin or aluminum. Also, the laser is controlled by a metal cog track, so there aren't belts to wear out. Plus I think the only thing that could die on ANY Playstation is the laser lens. (as long as you take care of it of course.)

Is the cd audio really that good compared to modern electronics? I normally use either my cheap RCA dvd player or 360 for playing music. I've got a 1001 PSX right here, it's got a dead CD drive, but if it's really that awesome I might fix it.

might as well, buy a working non-scph 1001 one with no cords off of eBay for 1¢ and swap the drives. I can't say for sure exactly how good the sound is compared to other players, but its pretty damn spiffy. At the very least I'd say its the best way to play PS1 games like the High Definition model 1 is the best way to play Genesis games.

I think the wear problem was usually related to the laser sled rather than the rails wearing out. Yes, all materials wear out, but I can't imagine a lubricated rail with an extremely light laser could wear out in any conceivably short amount of time. According to Wikipedia (yeah yeah, wikipedia, I know) the KSM-440AAM was the problem laser, this one apparently got a KSM-440ACM when it was refurbished (I'm going out on a limb and guessing the laser was cause for being refurbished, especially since it was a launch or near launch model and I think all SCPH 1001 models had the AAM laser).
