When bought at retail it's JUST A DOWNLOAD CODE AND A BOOKLET IN THE CASE?

I figured this last few month's slew of great "announcements" was too good to be true.
They better not "DLC Only" MHFU since I've been holding out on buying that one for 5 months.

That's exactly how I reacted when I heard about Patapon 2's format. I will NOT be buying it.
I'm afraid that's the direction games are moving. Nintendo's DSi has the smartmedia card slot to support downloads, and Xbox Live has spawned a whole online gamine scene. Currently, all the major platforms support both formats to one degree or another, but you know the bean counters want to go to download-only as that increases their profits.
This game had better come out alongside the console versions.

Way Forward's done well enough in making Contra 4 a feature rich game, I can only hope they pack this title with a fucking huge amount of fan service in a similar fashion.

It pisses me off too, because I like having a physical game collection. I don't tend to take a product too seriously when it doesn't exist in the physical world, and I can't see it on the shelf or hold it in my hands. $5-$10 downloadable games are one thing, but $40-$50 games in the future? Outrageous.
Oh, and as 17days is so fond of pointing out, what happens when something goes wrong with your system? We don't have a completely reliable way of protecting download-only purchases now, what about in the future?

I tend to agree. Think about the younger gaming populace. These people are all trained to buy music via iTunes, without ever owning the physical media. A whole new generation of gamers are being acclimated to non-physical media and digital distribution. I agree with you, Metal_Sonic, in that we can vote with our wallets. I won't d/l any DS games, and may or may not with PSP. But unfortunately, I think we will be in the minority, I'm afraid.
I appreciate Digital Distribution's convenience.
I appreciate owning physical media.
I DON'T appreciate the half & half scenario, or the empty case offered by Patapon 2.
All or nothing is the way I see it, they should have held off on full Digital Distribution for the next generation with the PSP Go.
As far as protecting your online purchases, I can only hope that in the future, Open ID technology actually opens up to the point of being a protected centralized hub, or a massive shift of support from all markets occurs and ownership is linked. Sure there are big privacy concerns, but it's still progress as far as the future of the internet and cloud computing is concerned.
I'd hope that 3rd parties would be able to bypass vendor lock-in the same way and offer their own software platforms via this method, while offering a portable client for various hardware.
It's asking too much I guess.
I'd really like to know WTF they were thinking by distributing empty Patapon 2 cases. One of the advantages of digital distribution is that publishers SAVE money on things like cases, inserts, and instructions, so that risky IPs like Patapon can recoup development costs a bit more easily.
How much money did they actually save by ONLY skimping on the UMDs?

After selling my PSP a few months back (got a good amount for it, helped land a few big games), I now desperately want to get the system back into my hands for one game: Lunar: Silver Star Harmony. I can't help it, I'm a sucker for the Game Arts classic.
Any-who, I've been looking around craigslist, and there's quite a few available for between $60 and $100. My question is this: is there a huge difference between PSP versions? I used to own a 1000, the launch model, but wouldn't mind slapping down an addition $20 if the 2000 or 3000 are worth it.
If modding for homebrew/emulators is your thing, the 1000 is the one you want. If not, it all becomes a matter of preference. Personally, I would buy the 1000 to save cash.
I'm pretty sure the 2000 units can be loaded with custom firmware as well.
But aren't those harder to mod? I haven't kept up with the PSP modding scene but I know that the 3000 aren't moddable yet. I think, I don't know for sure.
Looks like I'll be getting a perfect condition 1000 unit for around $70. Can't really be disappointed since functionally, it can do everything the other versions can do, save video out and mic stuff. Again, I'm plopping down a sizable chunk of change for one game, so I might as well save a few bucks if possible.
EDIT: Oh, and the battery sucks.
I have nine games for DS (it would look like only eight since I only have eight boxes). I don't use my DS frequently and since I moved, I could not get my DS on WiFi in my house because my sister has her router blocked off for some reason.
I don't have many DS games, and don't use it that much either. I bought Tetris, Mario Kart and Animal Crossing in the first week I had it, and Elite Beat Agents, Electroplankton and Ouendan later on (all £5 each).
When I do occasionally use the DS, it'll be for Tetris or Elite Beats/Ouendan. Mario Kart didn't take long to complete to death (and wifi has too many cheaters / quitters to make it worthwhile) and I got tired of Animal Crossing - after I collected nearly all the things, there was nothing else to do. I'm sure my place is a cockroach ridden, weed-filled craphole by now. :)
I used to have Starfox Command (so disappointing) Sonic Rush (not bad, aside from the shitty bosses of tedium) and Bleach: The Blade of Fate. I gave the first 2 away, and don't know what happened to Bleach. :/
So... yeah.

I just got one of these in today and I have to say: every PSP owner should own a grip extender. This makes the PSP infinitely easier to hold for people with big hands and makes it feel like a big PSX controller rather than a pancake with buttons on the edges. The triggers are still hard to hit comfortably, but you can reposition your hands if a game has heavy use of them. I was surprised at how solid this thing was for only being a little over $3 shipped on eBay. Even better, you can still use the power adapter and A/V cables, etc without removing it from the grip. You can also use a PSP Fat battery by just removing the cover and putting on the grip (I don't think there's room for the Fat battery cover to fit too). Awesome.
Reminds me a lot of the grip extension for the Wii Classic Controller, which also sold for around $3 in shops over here. My only problem with buying a grip is that it takes away portability. Of course, there's a lot of times when I do simply play on the couch at home, so it would serve a purpose.

What kind of good? I see this game in bargain bins everywhere. I've never liked Rhythm or music games and have always wondered why people liked Parappa, Rez, Guitar Hero or ANY games like that. Is Elite Beat Agents still a fun game even though it's a Rhythm game?Quote:
