Top five reasons why you dislike a particular console.
Well, we all have great opinions and ideas, do you have a console you really don't like. I HATE IT when people just piss and moan over your opinion and don't give you time to explain yourself by triple posting and then everyone thinks you're an ass. I have a strong dislike for the SNES.
5 Reasons for saying so. (yes SNES fanboys, don't post OMG HAATORZ, yet)
5 - Purple Lunchbox design - This is a weak complaint so it takes a back seat at number 5. YES I KNOW THAT IT'S LARGER THAN A FAMICOM BECAUSE OF FCC REGULATIONS, and everything and a toaster had to had 2 foot long RF sheilds. I wish that it had been a larger Famicom but whatever, the past is the past. This is the weakest complaint and the bottom 4 are really important, I originally had 4 really good complaints prepared for real life game arguements but this one is sorta tacked on.
4 - It's an RPG machine - Which is great for RPG fans. BUT RPGs are a really big niche. I don't mean big as in big amount of fans, I mean it's a real specific group of people. I don't like RPG's outside of Chrono Trigger. It's okay that they have long huge stories, but come on, by Final Fatasy 10.4, slash 5, the new challengers, the spin-off, part 3 of part 1. It sorta feels that long running series just mine their resources and just re-hash crap, or add a little to an existing game. (a la Mega Man Battle Network). Plus RPGs don't really handle sequels well, Seriously. Games like Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana have sequels, but how many surpass or even get close to the quality of the first or second game.
* I've never played Earthbound in any form so I have no room to give my opinion.
3 - The Soundchip - I know SNES fans say the Genesis sound chip is too harsh sounding. Occasionally, yes, but 80% of the time, No. Some games like Double Dragon sound like squeely crap, but games made specifically for the Genesis, Sound okay or great. After listening to all the games in Stereo sound, harsh or not, then going to the SNES side of the spectrum, I've noticed all the games are mono (some exceptions). They sound really quiet and some games sound alike and may have forgettable songs. I do love Actraiser's, Pilot Wings, Earthbound's, and Chrono Trigger's soundtracks, but after that, what else is there that doesn't sound like muffled, they all have great compositions, but other games sound like the reject tracks of Final Fantasy 7.
2 - Big N's Censorship - Okay it's great to censor games, but all of them? Thing is, I love Mortal Kombat, but the thing is I don't play it for OMGZORS L@@K AT TEH BLUDZ, I acctually play them for the gameplay and story that is somewhat better then Street Fighter 2 in my opinion. Back on topic, They take Mortal Kombat, They take out the blood, okay, they take out fatalities, okay, they alter the gameplay by slowing it down and supersizing the sprites, OH HELL NO. MK got kiddied up, and Street Fighter 2 got a special treatment by 6 revisions to cater to fans, but how did games like Killer Instinct slide through ? Is it like how on NES where all the games were neutered to get to America but stuff like Golgo 13 and Bionic Commando got through.
1 - All you want to play (for the most part) are the first party games - Like with any Nintendo console, they mine their resources and release sequels for long-running franchises. Some are okay and some are just crap hashed out to show the sereis hasn't died. But that's modern day, back then some great games were receiving the first game in their series. (Although, It gets to the point where we get the Mega Man X - X8 type of whore-outs). I'm going to admit the SNES was probably great for it's time, but after dealing with a high amount of Zelda games, Mario games, and Star Fox Adventures, It's hard for me to take these games seriously because of the recent desicions Nintendo has made for their franchises. After seeing the crap-house Wii, and the flop that was the Gamecube. It makes me not want to even deal with earlier games of the series now that the franchise may or may not be a sick parody of it's former self.

* please don't get derailed on one persons opinion, keep it to a paragraph at the beggining and list 5 reasons.

so we're not allowed to comment on people's opinions? I have some thoughts on your number one . . .
And I've never owned a console that I've hated, and any console I haven't owned I know nothing about . . . and thus have nothing to hate.

Oh no, go ahead and speak, just don't go on for pages and pages about it.

I cannot really say I hate SNES but :
1. The d-pad sucks on its controller
2. US version should have been like the EU and JP models.
3. Pain in the @$$ sound part (analog components). Real SNES sounds nothing like emulators... I'm working on a sound mod to achieve it (hopefully).
4. Stupid thinner cartslot so regular boards you can buy from shops won't fit, too thick...
5. Too little RAM for sound, aka sound through pillow in many many cases.

I'll start off by saying I don't agree with most of the SNES stuff, especially the only stuff worth playing being 1st party. Capcom has a ton of great games on the SNES, as does Konami. Even Jeleco has a pretty fun game called Utopia.
I've yet to play a console I completely hate. I can think of at least one title worth playing on the worst of consoles, but there are consoles out there that really make you say: "WTF?"
It was a close one, between the Jag and the 32X, but I have to give the nod to Sega's worst idea ever. The 32X was/is the biggest peice of crap to ever be passed off as a gaming platform.
5 - software:The software wasn't all that great and what was good, usually had a poor frame-rate, or someone else had a simular game that looked and played better.
4 - soundchip: Or lack there-of. Sega added what, one extra channel of sound, while most was produced using the existing Genny soundchip.
3 - Several games could have been done on the original hardware or Sega CD: Everyone knows that most of Sonic Chaotix relys on the Genny hardware to produce the graphics. Sega basically took a Genesis title and slapped it into a 32X cart. B.C. Racers was already done on the Sega CD, Amiga, and several other hardware platforms; did we really need it on 32X?
2 - Price: Why would anyone at Sega think they could sell a device, everyone knew was DOA, for $199?
1 - Craptacular hardware design: I have (2) 32X systems and both are a pain in the arse to get working on my Genesis. I could play a game, take it out and play a second game. I'd then try to go back to the game I played before and have a frozen Sega logo in front of me. Nice!
I'd say the only thing they got right with the 32X design, was the mushroom appearance. Obviously someone thought of it as an atomic bomb going off, leaving nothing but a mushroom cloud in its wake. The radiation from said cloud, is probably what killed off the Sega we knew back then.

For the most part, this is true. Nintendo's first-party titles on anyof their consoles are massive beasts that overshadow most third-party games. For good reason, though: Nintendo makes damn good games, which is why you regularly see Super Metroid, Super Mario World, Mario Kart, and Link to the Past on virtually every single "Best Game Ever" list out there.
But the Super Nintendo had a fair amount of notable third-party titles - not as many as the NES, but certainly more than the N64. Mega Man X is absolutely one of those games (the series quickly went to crap after X3, though).

I think you're kind of reaching there. A high amount of Zelda, Mario, and StarFox games?
After the NES, Nintendo produced one "true" Mario game for each successive systems: Mario World, Mario 64, Mario Sunshine, and Mario Galaxy. Gamers typically have to wait 5 years in between each game. The Zelda series is even more rarely seen (except on the Gameboys), as you don't have Zelda Golf or Zelda Party titles cluttering up the shelves. And StarFox is one of Nintendo's least-used series.
I hate to do this . . . but as a "Sega Fan" do you really want to start pointing fingers at Nintendo for "mining their resources" for sequels and "making questionable decisions" regarding their characters?
Hold on, I gotta sneeze . . . ahh-SONIC!!!
(sniff) Excuse me.
And I'm not going to fault you for calling the GameCube a flop, as it is commonly thought of as "Nintendo's Dark Period."
However, it is perfectly unjustified, as there was an incredible number of fantastic games like Metroid Prime 1 & 2, Zelda: The Wind Waker, Smash Bros Melee, Pikmin 1 & 2, and to a lesser extent Mario Sunshine. The GameCube also stood out from other Nintendo consoles because it also had a like number of quality third-party titles like Rogue Squadron, the Resident Evil remake . . . and of course Resident Evil 4 (which began as a GameCube exclusive).
I respect your opinion - go ahead and hate the SNES. I'm not particularly attached to it. But unless I interpretted you incorrectly (which I very well may have), I think you were way off base with your number one.

Yeah, the games are great (I just hate Guitar Hero Syndrome, even for great games) and your arguement is fantastic. PLUS EVERTHING SEGA MAKES AFTER THE DREAMCAST DIED WAS CONSISTENT FAIL, DON't PLAY ANY SONIC GAMES RELEASED BETWEEN 2002 - current day.
EDIT : So nintendo fans don't flood the forums calling me OMG HATORZ ON OUR HARDWAREZ
NES = Fantastic
SNES = Meh
N64 = some of the best 2nd party support I've ever seen.
Gamecube = Meh (but a tad better then SNES)
Wii = Fail

The genesis and snes are two completely different consoles that appeal to two completely different groups of gamers. Period. I love the Genesis because I was an arcade rat and always loved arcade style game play. Which is pretty much action action action, little if any story and more action. The snes has a flood of games with very deep story lines, slowish and meticulous gameplay and really appealed more to this style of gamer.
The genesis appealed to the more action oriented gamer:
Much more extensive shooter library
Arcade sequels and ports: Shinobi for instance, which is just action packed!
Arcade style gameplay in general, I mean Sonic is far more of an arcade-esque platformer than mario is. You have so many different ways to play the game. This doesn't make Sonic better, it makes Sonic different. Personally, I much prefer the Genesis style of games.
Both are amazing consoles, period. The 16-bit era was the greatest era of gaming ever. The SNES/Genesis competition alone made it fantastic. With both sides constantly pumping out amazing titles year after year to keep pace. That sorta competition is really gone with the flood of cross platform titles. In reality there is no way to distinguish between the different modern consoles besides a handful of games.
Back then:
SNES had final fantasy and Zelda
Genesis had Shining Force and Beyond Oasis
SNES had Mario
Genesis had Sonic
the list goes on. They were two very different 16-bit systems that appealed to two different sorts of gamers. I don't dislike the SNES, though I have that tongue-in-cheek anti-Nintendo kid in me, I'm not really serious. It was a great system.
Genesis rocks its world though.
---------
Systems I've disliked:
Atari 5200: The system itself is shit. The games are amazing. The 5200 really is an amazing platform BUT:
It's gigantic and the controllers are utter crap. The controllers are why I gave my 5200 up. By far the best system Atari ever made and they screwed it up beyond all comprehension.
I hate Sony's controllers with a passion too. It's a cool system (Saturn is better) but I hate hate hate hate Playstation controllers. Saturn controller FTW!

I can't believe anyone would list the N64 before the SNES.
That's like saying you enjoy be punched in the balls more than copping a feel.

All consoles would be better off with these qualities.
1. First off if a console cannot spew pudding from it cartridge slot then I don't want it. I have said it once I'll say it a thousand times. I demand pudding.
2. If it can't transform into a robot and breakdance then what good is it?
3. If it can't beat up my neighbors console then its useless
4. It has to have a minimum of 8 add ons all which must be useless, like speakers on my back, controllers that I wave my hand frantically through light beams. gloves, pads, modems for online banking, karaoke or a robot friend for my console
5. When all of its add ons are combined it must be at least 1 foot tall and weigh so much it causes my shelves to sag. In fact it must be so big that it must give the illusion that it could only be built in space. So big that even Voltron and Tranzor Z would be envious of its mightiness.

I can't believe this thread made it 11 posts without someone hating on the 360. I'll bite though since I've been on a "screw 360" spree as of late.
5. Halo: I'll admit, I loved the first one. I then bought Halo 2 launch day and liked it except I honestly forgot which Halo I was playing, then I remembered because I was dual-wielding guns. Same with Halo 3 except I found no real difference whatsoever, to this day I think I might have just been playing Halo 2 using a 360 controller with my friends telling me it was Halo 3, I'll never really know.
4. Fanboys: Every system has fanboys, and I don't like any of them, except the rare Genesis lover and occasional PS3 fanboy, probably because they have good taste. People with different opinions offend me.
3. "Nickel and Dime" you to death, although "$20 to $100 Dollar you to death" is much more fitting of a term: Sure the Arcade will run you $200 bucks, but you wanna do more than game saves? Buy this HDD for $100 bucks. Want to go online but don't want to run cables throughout your house? Another $100 bucks. Don't want to stock pile on AA's? Cough up another $20 per controller. Want to go online? Be smart and pay $50 up front for a year, or go the route most people go and buy a 3-month card for $20 bucks 4 times a year. A lot of it is optional to a lot of people but to me those are real turn offs.
2. The massive failure rate of these systems: I don't even need to explain this one. The fact that "wrapping it up in a towel until it overheats" is a common solution is just laughable, although sweet when it works.
And the number 1 reason why I hate the 360 is....
1. It made people nearly complacent with shitty hardware. It's one thing if a console breaks, shit happens. But if its a widespread and constant problem, why put up with it? I deal almost daily with people telling me stories of them being on their 3rd or 4th 360, and I always wonder, "Why the hell would anyone put up with that shit," regardless whether or not Microsoft will fix it for free. If my Ford completely tanks on me 3 or 4 times in a year, I'm getting a new car, probably not a Ford. If my house had to have 3 or 4 massive repairs done on it in that same span, I'm moving. Hell even if my watch looses time 3 or 4 times a year I'm getting rid of it. The fact that complete system failures are so frequent and the fact that so many people are just willing to lie down and take it is the biggest reason why I dislike the 360.

I don't dislike any systems really and I definitely don't hate any. If I had to pick a console to 'pick on', it'd be the N64.
#1 Compared to the PSX, Saturn, Genesis, or SNES, or NES or GB or..or..or. Where are the games, man?
#2 Yeah! No more texture tweaking and polygon geeking. But same low res models and low framerate. Wait... is that blurry mess of 3 colors supposed to be grass texture? Hey! If I put these glasses on and rub vaseline on the lens, my PSX games look just like an N64 graphics! Yeh_hah.
#3 Cartridges. I was on the console CD bandwagon since '90, why the hell am I playing on cartridges the next gen console 7-8 years later?
#4 Oh hey look, Zelda:OOT. Okay, that was fun. Anything else? Mario64? I don't wanna play ghay-ass mario64. Pokeman? No. Oh another Zelda game... ahh too bad it sucks.
#5 Forget this. I rather go play the 3 good games for my SGX than what's in the n64 library N64.

The Jackal
It's got to be the Ps3. Got it at launch and returned it after 3 days!
1. No games - the only reason I got this shit was to play Sonic'06- how I regret that now!
2. The controler - 3 revisions of a nearly 10 year pad and they still can get the goddamn analog sticks right!
3. Power consumption - why does it have to use 250 watts? It's not like we need the blue ray drive when most games can still fit on a single DVD!
4. Blu-Ray Player - it's slow and ugly - talk about crap...
5. Design - It's weights a ton and has to be one of the most dog-faced consoles I have EVER owned...
