It was different with 3DO though, I remember reading an article on it, the 3DO company designed the hardware and then different companies manufactured it, but of course companies like Panasonic and Goldstar weren't particularly interested in making money off the gaming side of things so they just bumped the price of the console up.
You have to remember that most consoles are sold at a loss, but the companies make their profits on the software, this tactic couldn't work with the 3DO because Panasonic and Goldstar weren't receiving royalties from the software sold.
