Nintendo didn't do anything against 2D games at all, in fact I'd imagine they would've been happy for any games they could get for the N64, in the early days of the PS1 however Sony on the other hand actually refused permission for 2D games to be released, saying that 2D was in the past, for instance they actually refused the release of Worms repeatedly on the system until it reached the level of popularity where it became a stupid decision to deny it's creation.

Where it come to the Saturn/N64 comparison however you have to take into account that the N64 gave a very different experience to the PS1/Saturn and the few games released in the early days, most notably Mario 64 and Goldeneye gained a lot of critical acclaim, and were seen as a benchmark for a long period of time.

At the end of the day the Saturn was basically a PS1 with less games, and the games it did have virtually always looked inferior compared to the PS1 games of the same era (unless said games were developed by Sega themselves)

I wish I could afford more consoles so I could REALLY try them and then compile a list what I dislike about them.

So I'll guess I have to go with the Saturn, because:

1 lack of decent games (released in Europe)
2 when released cost way too much money
3 load times too long
4 original controller isn't practical at all, and
5 I never felt as disappointed about a console I spent money upon.

Okay, point 5 isn't really a reason on its own, but I still feel that way, and I still am bitter about purchasing the Saturn and not waiting a few months and then buying a PSX instead

Excuse me if this is a big bump, but anyway. I have to say that one of the worst consoles I've played on is the Game.com. There's many reasons for that.

1. Most of the games are pretty much unplayable and hardly works on the console itself.
2. Way too large with a bad pen.
3. Almost all of the games have big problems with glitches and so on, Sonic Jam have some of the worst frames per seconds I've ever seen in a game in my entire life.
4. The console runs just too slow and the pen almost dosen't even work right.
5. How many batteries are there, four AA-batteries to run a lame and huge console like this? I can't even fit it in my pocket.

If you want a console with a pen that actually has a good battery time and that works CORRECT, get yourself a DS. Even if I don't like the Nintendo DS, I would rather play on that one then on the Game.com. The only positive thing with the Game.com is that you can have two games in it at the same time.

I always wanted to get one of these for less then 5 bucks so I could play Resident Evil 2 on it.

I'm feeling saucy today. I have two systems to complain about.


DreamCast:

5. Awkward controller. I refuse to believe that they couldn't have positioned the cord so it comes out of the back of the controller rather than the front.

4. Hard-to-find games. Every other system in my collection is pretty easy to collect for. It's pretty rare to find a Dreamcast game in my area that doesn't have "NHL," "NBA," "NFL," or "Browser" in the title.

3. The VMU. I like the idea of a memory card with an LCD screen and buttons that allow you to play games on it separate from the main console, but the former is pretty superfluous and the latter wasn't really used too much at all, as far as I know. Those "innovative" features just added together to make a memory card that required a battery.

2. Graphics. So, was this thing PS1 quality or PS2? Most of the games I've seen point to the former, which means that developers clearly weren't taking advantage of the hardware's capabilities.

1. The Games. The DC wasn't around long enough to build up a particularly robust library of games, and most of those games were available on the other then-current systems at the time. Then the one time exclusives got ported over to the GameCube & PS2, making this the most redundant system in my collection.


PSP

5. The Screen. Oh, it's better than the DS screens, to be sure. But the DS doesn't have streaks and contrails from moving objects.

4. Unnecessary features. I prefer my systems to be dedicated gaming systems rather than trying to be full media centers and GPSs (eventually).

3. The analog nub. It's too damn hard to use.

2. The battery life. A fully-charged battery only seems to last a couple hours. And for whatever reason, the battery goes dead even when I don't use the damn thing.

1. The Library. Seems to be marketed towards people that would rather be playing a full-sized console, but need something to do on the bus or the toilet. There are very few game available for this system that don't offer an identical experience to something you can get on a console, resulting in a primarily forgettable library with only a few bright spots.

I see there's not enough hate for the 32X. Let me add on an additional vote for worst system/add on ever!

5. So many fucking hookups to make this thing work and you have to use an extra power adapter!

4. The games looked like they were SNES quality (graphics wise)

3. Not enough games on the system nor were they worth owning especially since most of them can be replaced on the Saturn with way better ports. A massively pixelated port of Doom is not fun nor is a generic fighter with pixelated body parts that has a character pull off a worthless ballerina-style move is considered jawsum. Yes I'm talking about Cosmic Carnage!

2. Poorly designed hardware. Where was the sound chip to improve the audio!? It didn't even improve the Sega CD. What was the point of releasing it if the Saturn was just coming around the corner?

Lolz? Plenty of Dreamcast games look better than Wii games, even. Basically all were 480p, too. Playstation 1 games all look blocky and play at like 10 frames. I do not like Dreamcast a lot either compared to other consoles, but that is totally wrong.

4) Market Domination: Everyone is trying to copy Nintendo, now all the games on XBLA suck.

Gotta agree with Kogen, My sister just got a Wii and lets just say I was very upset by the constant slow down while playing a simple railgun game like Umbrella Chronicles. Also Dreamcast Tennis 2k2 shoots Wii tennis out of the water in all departments.

And feel free to list off all these Dreamcast games that look better than, say . . . the best GameCube games (which is essentially what the Wii is).

5. Battery-powered Rumble Pack

Explain this to me. I need an explanation. In the same generation that Sony was able to create a controller with two rumble motors that were powered by the console itself, Nintendo introduced the Rumble Pack, which required ordinary AA batteries.

Are you f**king kidding me?! Batteries?! This is 1996! Unless it's a Gameboy, I don't want to see batteries! This was still the day that rechargeable batteries were joke, and I'm not going to waste regular alkaline batteries on a game console that I plug into the wall!

4. Memory card port.

Why is it on the controller? Why is it not on the console? Why does a cartridge system even need a memory card port?

...Oh, I suppose it's for that rumble pack that should have been built into the controller in the first place. Thank you, Sony!

3. Cartridge system.

Not that I don't love the cartridge, but Nintendo ensured that the N64 would be incapable to keep up with the Sony's third-party line-up, leaving it to rely almost completely on first and second party games, which leads me to my next point...


2. Rare.

F*ck Rare! God damn, I hate this company! Here's a company that that basically attained success by cribbing from Nintendo first-party games. Banjo-Kazooie!!! It's just like Mario 64!!! ...except that it sucks.

And Diddy Kong Racing, a game in which you take shortcut after shortcut and you still only marginally cross the finish line ahead of your nagging AI opponents. And what's worse is that they make you do all the courses a second time, while collecting coins.

Collecting arbitrary items?!? IN A RARE GAME!!?!?!?!

The ultimate abomination of Nintendo's annoying "let's reinvent the controller with every console" policy. Oversized, awkward to hold, and completely outclassed by the Dualshock within months of its release. And then when Gamecube came out, they basically copied it. Way to innovate, big N!

The N64 controller was so bad, that I wasted a lot of money to buy a third-party controller that reorganized the controller into a more traditional configuration, like the Dualshock. Unfortunately, these had an annoying habit of breaking.

The GameCube controller is nothing like the DualShock controller (which came out much later than the N64 controller). Still, I completely agree with you about the suckage that was the N64 controller. I remember loving it when I first bought the system, but after playing it recently, I really think it was Nintendo's worst decision besides the Virtua Boy. Good intentions, but my God that thing was awkward.

I respect the N64 controller only for what it contributed to the GameCube controller (which was, other than the 360 controller, the best analog controller I've ever played)

It wouldn't be so bad if the N64 controller didn't have one of the worst "analog" sticks in video game history.

I suspect in designing the controller, that was done to avoid interfering with the VMU slots. In either case, there is a clip on the rear for people who want the cord to extend out the back, so that mostly addresses that (of course, seems like lots of people aren't award of it :p ).

It's a dead system. Goodluck finding a variety of SMS or Neo-Geo in your neighborhood while you're at it. :) During its lifespan, the Dreamcast had no game shortages and even lower print titles such as Mr. Driller or Record of Lodoss War were obtainable on release.

Quite a few VMU mini-games exist, and it spawned an active homebrew scene for the time. The VMU screen was a boon for sports games (re: American football) but nothing more than a novelty in other titles. The real drawback was the battery life, which absolutely stunk if you attempted to enjoy some of the better mini-games. A later release supposedly extended the battery life, but I never noticed any great benefit from it.

"Most of those games were available on other then-current systems?" Not during its life time. The Dreamcast, during its life, was loaded with exclusive titles. Sounds like you came into the system late and really don't know what you're talking about (no offense -- though your "games are too hard to find" comment would point to that conclusion as well). I will agree that now there isn't much incentive for most people to pick it over other competing systems at the time, but it still has some great console exclusives such Seaman, Record of Lodoss War, Daytona USA 2001, tons of shooters (Gunbird 2, Mars Matrix, Border Down), and so forth. Of course, your own personal preference would dictate if its worth keeping a system around for those exclusive games.

I use the clip on my controller, but I wonder if it would have been especially difficult to position the cord so it at least point towards the rear of the controller. The clip seems more like a "band aid" than a deliberate design choice.

Most of the other systems I own are "dead," also. It's not as hard finding those games, though (although SMS games are admittedly even more rareeven on ebay, and I've never seen a Neo Geo game)

Very well, I'll put this point on hold until I can objectively compare Sonic Adventure to Crash Bandicoot. But I haven't seen a Dreamcast game that compares too favorably with the PS2 or GameCube.
