Thanks for the info. Always great to dissect region differences, and this is one I had no idea about! The collision when grappling in the NTSCJ version is so flaky sometimes.

So maybe extra voice overs were removed to make room for extra bug fix coding?
I can't imagine the code changes required to fix the Japanese version's bugs would be so great in size to require the removal of the vocal track. I'd imagine the "all sons of old gods die" line was removed to mitigate potential controversy in the West.
Has there been an effort to perhaps make a directors cut rom hack, that has all the good stuff from the Japanese version along with the fixes from the US release?
can someone breakdown the changes from the JP version?

I've had strider on the Genesis since the day it released in the states. I still play it. It's one of the best arcade-to-console ports ever made, and one of the best games on the console. Period.
I still can't beat this game on one credit on hard difficulty. The last level just chews me up. I actually wish there was a few more difficulty levels.
I wouldn't call it the best arcade-to-console ports ever made. Maybe for its time. But when I got the game at launch, the one thing that irked me was the sporadic intermittent flashing of the sprites. Did anyone ever notice that? The one thing that was enjoyable was the amount of variety in the game. Every stage practically had a different enemy and different environment. Audibly, I think they did a good job matching the musical score from the arcade original.
With respect to beating the hard difficulty, I suspect you need to practice on a lower setting in order to memorize enemy placement and where to place your character for maximum damage.
Confession time, I do not own this game but loved it when I played it at my friend's house in the 90s. Which version is the more definitive to own?
I would imagine that most people would consider the arcade version found on the Capcom Classics Collection Vol 2, or that came with the PSX version of Strider 2, but as far as the 4th gen port, a vast majority consider the Genesis or X68000 ports the most accurate. The Genesis port is really great though, it's worth hunting down and owning a complete copy. It's Ghouls N' Ghost's-level of importance when it comes to Genesis collecting, in my opinion.
The MD version's soundtrack sounds better to my ears than the arcade original and the redrawn sprite is cool too. Definitely worth owning the console version as well in this case.
The US version fixes some of the glitchiness of the original JP release and ditches Hiryu's cries when swinging the cypher, along with the more questionable removal of the 'sons of old gods' speech from Grandmaster Meiyo. It also allows continues unlike the JP version. On anything other than easy the game can be quite challenging despite being short.
The bad - and you probably already know this one - the western cover art makes a mockery of the subject matter at hand.
