Hacks & Homebrews: Unofficial Ports

Over the years, many would-be programmers have tinkered with the Genesis in a myriad of ways. Game hacks are common, and today's scene even has completely new games on the horizon. Along with the common stuff, there are some efforts that deserve closer examination, including some unofficial ports of several games from the SNES (and even one from the Playstation!). Excellent article! I was hoping these pirates would be documented somewhere in the Sega-16 encyclopedia. Arrgh, matey!

For what it's worth, I really enjoy Shui Hu Feng Yun Zhuan (aka SUIKO FUUN DEN for astute evil bay shoppers). It's an awesome beat 'em up similar to Knights Of The Round. We have a thread about it on this forum if you want to learn more. Too bad Super Fighter Team decided not to port it!

Ghost Hunter is a fantastic remake of Super Pang aka Super Buster Bros. It has nothing to do with ghosts or hunting - instead, expect bubble popping simplicity at it's finest! This one's absolutely worth the trouble to hunt down.

Yang Warrior Family doesn't fair as well. It has an old school Asian action movie charm to it, though. Worth playing if only to enjoy the music.

Here's hoping Super Fighter Team moves ahead with a Magic Bubble port. Mr. Cobb mentioned elsewhere that they've acquired the rights to the game. I don't suppose there's any more news on this, is there? Pretty please?

Oh, and if anybody knows where I can find a copy of Link Dragon on cart, I'd be very grateful. Thanks.

The Rockman X3 screenshot is not 256 pixels wide, but 320... the frames are to hide the exta area, so the play area would remain 256pixels wide...

Just noticed a mistake I made: The Rockman-X-series has not 5, but 8 games entries! (1-3 for the Snes, 4-6 for the PSX, and 7 & 8 for the PS2). Melf, could you fix this?

Regarding the Strange size of the Genesis-screen shot, when starting up the game in an emulator it is displayed in a weird wide-screen. However, when playing my cart in a regular Genesis, the screen pretty much looks like it does in the screen shot, so the comparison is pretty accurate.

I think I know that one as well... I own a cart that reads "Lord of the rings - Return of the King", of which I know that it's actually a hack of a chinese-made, medieval-themed beat'em'up (plus one orcish and one green-skinned-character), their names having been replaced by Lord or the Rings-charakters. Could that be the same game? (Now that would be odd: Another example of a hack of a hack! ;) )

It would look accurate if you stretch the 256pixel wide SNES shot to 320 pixels wide... that is how it would compare. ON real HW, the image, wether it is 320 or 256 pixels wide, is always stretched to be as wide as the TV screen is (I'm being slightly simplistic here).

Wouldn't it be easier to just use the 256x224/240 resolution mode of the MD?

it would have been... I guess they looked at Saturn version, version had such borders...

Can any suggest to me a good homebrew Sega Genesis, SNES, or Neo Geo compilation for the Dreamcast. I've been looking for one.

I agree about the Rockman screenshots, and also the Mario World port that deserves to be mentioned. I am still looking for the cartridge or ROM for this one.

I have these in the works since about 2004, but there were several circumstances that led to delays on the releases.

I hope I can release all three during this year. :)

If I had a copy of Super Mario World, I'd have discussed it for sure. However, I never have seen any proof that such a port existed, neither as a cartridge nor as a Rom. So far I've only heard of it from rumors. I can't really discuss a game I don't have, and as long as I don't see some verification that this port even exists, I see no point in doing so.

I have three Mario-versions for the Genesis: The hack of Squirrel King/Chip'n'Dale (which, by the way, carries a label that reads "Super Mario World", and whose title screen says so, too, but, well, it's not)., the one discussed in greater detail in this article, and a simple hack of Pugsy called "Warioland 3" (all in cartridge form).

I hate how people are able to make clips from these games but finding a rom is impossible!

same with Super Mario World for the NES, you can never find the final finished version,
its always th unfinished version that you see everywhere.

but still people put clips of the finished version on youtube!! :daze:

And i'm kinda confused about the Alladin article, do you mean that the Sega version of Alladin 2 was a legit game?
I always thought it was a pirate port of the Snes version and thats why the gameplay was off.
