It's common in many SNES games. Think "Contra III".
BTW, was the Genesis version's soundtrack another Paul Furniss project? I dunno.......I don't like the guy's overly FM-synthy work.

I really dig the Snes music in that clip, like Joe Redifer says it sounds movie like,
but i like that in theme music.
Would have been better suited in an Aliens (2nd movie) based game though, but thats because i never liked the 3rd movie.
If I wanted to listen to a movie I'd watch a movie. I don't like my games trying to sound like movies. It's pathetic at best. Why try to sound like a different genre altogether?
Or, you can stay away from games based on movies altogether ;)
But the Genesis version doesn't sound like a movie. Instead, it sounds good. And other SNES games try to sound like movies even though they are not based on one.
Anyway, movie games shouldn't try to duplicate the feel of the movie. That's what the movie itself is for. Instead, it should use the movie as a backdrop for the story, scenario and characters... nothing more. That's basically what Alien3 does. Except the SNES version has shitty music. Lots of current-gen games try to have this same kind of overly-dramatic shit music. Name a current game that has good original music. Good luck!
The only game where I really liked the movie-like music was Hook (which used actual movie music instead of wannabe movie music). But then again that was composed by someone much better and there was nothing else to like.
Let's not forget Batman Returns (Sega CD) which has better music than the movie. It has videogame music!
That's one thing that kind of makes me scratch my head about SNES games. Developers seemed to think that SNES players wanted more in their games, that even the arcade-style games had to have some Mario World influence (Joe and Mac springs to mind).
The Genesis version of Alien 3 didn't have bad music at all, don't get me wrong. I really liked that it wasn't over the top (as the SNES music obviously is) and was more atmospheric.
Any game based on a film to which John Williams did the score (ie Hook), should incorporate the film's music into the game.
And Batman Returns for Sega CD doesn't use Danny Elfman's score? I really liked that soundtrack! Have you played Batman Returns for the SNES?
Batman Returns does not use Danny Elman's score. It is all original Spencer Nilsen work. The movie has a good score, don't get me wrong, but imagine all of the great original music that wouldn't exist as a result if they had used it! I have played the SNES Batman Returns and while it is well made, I grew bored with it very quickly. I also recall it being crazy-easy. Like the Sega CD version better (with the platform scenes turned off).
Platform scenes . . .
isn't it basically the Genesis game with added driving sequences and a CD-quality score? I played the Genesis version very briefly and quickly replaced it with a better game.
Yes that's pretty much what the Sega CD game is. I only ever liked the original batman game on the Genny. The others are, as our friends across the pond like to say:
Tosh. Twattle. Poppycock. Me matteey guvnor.
Yeah, the Genesis cart was a drab, purple-ish clunker. The SNES one from Konami was cool though, though its driving sections weren't as good as the SCD's legendary ones though.
I own both versions. Played the hell outta both too.
Im also a SNES hater for the most part (love Cybernator tho)
But, the SNES version is overall better IMO
The music fits the games very well, like the Alien Movies
GFX are well animated and the "flashlight" effect is nice too.
SFX are also great too, the aliens and guns are as close to watching the movie.
Control side both are pretty equal.
The Genny versions pretty good in all, but if you are going for the "Mood" of the Alien movies and Games...SNES wins here.
Plus you get the "Game over man!" sample too!
Im a huge ALIEN fan by the way, from c64,2600 tp PC! My personal Favs of all Alien games are AVP2 PC, AVP Arcade,AVP Extiction Xbox.
As much as I love our dear MD games, I'll have to side with the SNES here.
It's a better game overall.
And I think that good music is good music, regardless where it comes from. The thing with these games is that the music is so different in each title that it's really just a matter of taste.
The intro BGM on the MD is one of the catchiest themes ever to grace the machine, and it's one of the reasons I prefer the music on the MD. I do like the atmospheric music of the SNES though. It fits the theme (aliens-claustrophobia-tension) better.
Genesis does
