"Dick, Big Boy's been seen down by the courtyard."
"I'm on my way!"
Shame on the reviewer. Yes, its slow but the game mechanics alone make it a winner....a winner I tell ya...
this game rocks i have it

It says "Source Codes: (c) 1990 Sega of America" - I wonder who developed this game ? Sound engine (SMPS Z80) and the Shinobi / ESWAT / Streets of Rage font certainly give the impression it was developed by a Japanese team, but it wasn't released until a year later in Japan - along with SOA's Joe Montana Football.
I wouldn't complain about the graphics, they're pretty much on par with other 1990 releases, definitely not the Genesis' best, but appropriate for the era. My ony complaint is the occasional situations where you have to take a hit from something, no matter what you do you have to take at least one hit. Other than that, I kinda like this game.
Well, at least it's better than the NES, installment, so you can always point a finger at Nintendo-users and say "My Dick is better than your Dick!"
That was immature, I apologize...
i loved the first level. being able to wreck shit with my pistol and tommy gun was bad ass.
I used to rent this as a kid and recently picked up a copy on ebay and played it last night for the first time in over 10 years. It's fun as hell! Maybe a bit of retrogoggles for me, but it's really not that bad. If it played any faster there'd be no way to manuever through some of the punching levels.
Ok the graphics were better on some later releases. Play Super Mario Brothers right before playing this. Mmmmmm early 16-bit...
Just picked this up and I love it so far! As a kid I enjoyed the NES game The Punisher, which was a slowly scrolling screen, and shooting anywhere. Basically the whole game was like the background section of this game! Plus Dick Tracy has the foreground platforming / action section. I think it's brilliant!
Pesonally I really like this game and think it still stands up really well today, its a 7/10 for me
I like this game too... Nice recreation of the Dick Tracy's atmosphere from the movie.
I love the cartridge soundtrack.
I too enjoy this game. Dick moves a little slow, but it's fun gunning everything and everyone down in your path. Solid 6 or 7/10
Very enjoyable game and highly representative of what the Genesis does right. Much simpler and less varied than I remembered but undiminished for that. The reviewer's wrong all over; particularly, why should Dick Tracy jump like MegaMan? Not even Batman should jump like MegaMan. Thank god this was an early release or the graphics would've been blindingly garish; plus as they are it looks like old comic book print.
I wish it was just pure tommy-gun action or split into distinct levels instead of having to kill enemies in the foreground and background at the same time.
I have not really played this game long enough to comment on the review but i do remember making one observation and this was that when you spray the opposite side of the street with the machine gun anything glass breaks but you never get bullet holes in any brickwork:p,it did not look too bad to be honest and i feel i need to play this game again for longer.
The board won't let me create new threads for some reason but I might as well ask here. Does anyone know how to get the level select cheat for Dick Tracy to work? On various sites I see "UP, DOWN, A, A, B, C, C and Start on the options screen" listed but I can't get it to work.
A great game that I frequently play and I'm glad to see others on here that share my enthusiasm for it. Going toe to toe against bad guys in front of you and then mowing down bad guys on the other side of the street with your tommy-gun never gets old and neither does hanging on to the side of a police car and gunning down gangsters in passing cars. The last level is so bloody hard that I often wondered if the game was never finished and they just made the last level impossible so that you would never find that out! This game is a solid and very playable shoot-'em-up and I'm so glad I've found others who agree with me on that and I would also like to point out that considering when this title was released the graphics are perfectly adequate and actually better than a fair few others that came out at the time.
This game is alright. Nothing special.
This game is fun to play about once every year or two.
About the best thing I can say about it is that the Tommy Gun mechanic is kind of neat. Other than that little novelty, it's a very, very average action platformer with guns and the occasional fist.
An entertaining Shinobi (coin-op version)-like game that stays true to the weird - and quite attractive IMHO, with its weird use of colour - aestethics of the 1990 movie. In the cutscenes, the characters actually look like Warren Beatty or Al Pacino rather than the original comic strip designs by Chester Gould. Lots of action, fine pace, but nothing especially remarkable. Just a very correct licensed game.
5/10 seems pretty fair to me tbh.
5/10 being 100% average that is, it's not as good as Shinobi or Rolling Thunder (two biggest comparisons I could make... Sunset Riders? I dunno) but it's okay, it's not offensively bad but doesn't do much that makes it great either.
The two planes shooting makes this a good unique video game alone so being a Dick Tracy game is a added benefit but yes all that said it still feels like an average fun game.
I guess if you have a lot of nostalgia for the Dick Tracy comics or film (yeah, it's not actually that bad a film) you'd enjoy it more.
I have zero nostalgia for Dick Tracy though, pretty sure he was totally out of the public eye when I was born
The '90 Dick Tracy film I did go see in the theater also was much advertised around that time here and hard to miss. Yes liked it but didn't till than know much about the comics. So yeah that's apart of it.
Just beat it yesterday (the final two stages were HARD) and 5 is way too harsh. Hell, I'd say the entire review is not the best. The game is simple in concept, but it does all it needs to do to keep you entertained, the visuals are really good and the music is nice enough. It's funny that while this game never came out in the arcade, it's an arcade title through and through.
Something about seeing the glass destroyed when Tracy would shoot it was quite impressionable to me. Small details in the Genesis games really struck me.
