whoah whoah whoah, let me get this straight: You won't buy licensed compilations straight from SNK (which in my comparison to a REAL MVS of Metal Slug 5 looked identical, I don't care what brain damaged individual thinks otherwise) featuring optional arranged soundtracks and full color palette adjustments (on some compilations anyway, moot features to me, but some may like it), but you would gladly pay about $500 (est. cost: AES+converter+multicart) to play BOOTLEG ROMHACKS on a real AES? If they were all PERFECT ROM dumps and was somewhat complete, it may be worth it, but considering many of them are hacked versions of other games and all of them probably have glitches/problems (at least it looked that way from the short video posted in this thread with the random vertical lines in MS 3), thats just stupid.

And for those that hate on compilations/ports/emulation, why on earth do you constantly recommend Metal Slug as a Saturn title? That version is dogshit compared to the PS2 compilation. I'm all for real hardware when the price is acceptable (for instance: fuck Genesis compilations), but if you are just looking for gameplay and not collector bragging rights, there is little reason to buy an actual Neo Geo. Not saying I won't as I plan to be rich one of these days, but if you're on a budget, there are much better game options for the buck.

Nothing compares to actually playing on the original hardware. As for the multicarts, I've realised that they are indeed bootlegs and bootlegs are a no no for me now a days.

I would like to just go on record that the vertical lines in the video aren't there. Thats just how the camcorder picks up the signal from the tv. Happens when I video tape a computer monitor to.

As for the multicart. My experience with it has been very favorable. All games I have tried seem to work just fine and I didn't notice any graphical error or changes in color templates. Now for the record I have a LOT of games. I am a collector and a gamer. When a game is 500 dollars thats's a pretty big investment for one game. now if i was a hardcore collector then maybe i would pursuit the investment. i am a collector thou and you might be able to see with the games i do own.

now i could understand the argument with people saying its bad to condone such a cart as the multicart but for me it perfect. it gives me a chance to play alot of games that quite honestly i would never get a chance to own. sure i could play them on an emulator but the cart plays just like it was the real hardware. even the system being modded detects each individual game to unlock codes for them.

so if you want to experience a wide variety of different games on the cheap using the real hardware i think the multicart is a good purchase.

if you want nothing but the original game then obviously you would turn your head to the cart.

the crazy thing about this whole neo geo thing is that one game for the aes can be almost 1000 and that's with case and artwork, same game for the mvs might be half that or even less and usually the carts are in fair shape with nothing. the screwy thing is there basically the same board in each cartridge but you can't play mvs on aes without the convertor.

collecting for this system is i believe for the hardcore enthusiest.

Don't listen to 17days, he has no idea what he's talking about. Those compilations on the Playstation are not 100% accurate. The most glaring difference is that the music and sound are off.

There is nothing like owning the actual hardware and getting the real ARCADE experience. MVS is the best route to go, the games are relatively cheap and easy to find. For example, I paid $20 each for Metal Slug 1, 2 and X. I own about 30 cartridges spanning all types of genres, like Baseball Stars 2, Neo Turf Masters, King of Figthers, Burning Fight, etc. That's one of the main reasons why I love the Neo, the library is extremely versatile yet deep. The compilation packs are missing some of my favourite games

Anyways, here's a picture of my big red 4 slot. I paid $350 for it with 4 games back in 2005. It was my dream to own one, and it was definitely worth all the difficulty of moving it down into my basement!

OK, well you got some HELLA good deals, and for that price, I would happily do the same.

I still, however, disagree with you in regards to the compilations. I have listened to the PS2 comps. vs. OST mp3s and I hear absolutely no difference. The sound isn't even emulated, its streamed from the disc, you can tell, for example, if you pause SNK Arcade Classics Vol. 1 on the Neo Geo boot screen (select button) it will continue to play the boot music, then when you unpause it, it will play the remainder of the graphic without sound (if you let the bios song finish first). There are also some games on these compilations you can't get otherwise, like Metal Slug 6 since it was never released on Neo Geo hardware. I personally use a Namco PSX fighter stick and you can map the top 4 buttons to be identical to a Neo Geo.

I map to X, [], ^, and R1 as if they were the red, yellow, green, and blue respectively. It may not be "perfectly 1337 haxor Neo Geo collector dawg tyte yo," but its damn good enough for me for the time being, at a HUGE fraction of the price.

Pssst, btw, all those games you listed are currently available on PS2 compilations ;)

I can't say whether or not the PS2 compilations are accurate or not. Before I had them I could only play Neo-Geo games through Mame with a shitty composite out from my Video card. Now I get to play Metal Slug with component Video and and an optical out. I think it is pretty sweet and a marked improvement. I can't argue with the Neo-Geo experts over accuracy. For the price of an AES or even a Supergun I could pay for a lot things like rent and food,etc. I think it is more of practical approach.If I ever get rich I'll buy both.

Thats a very nice cab you got there! I might design a super gun that can be incorporated in to a upright or candy cab. I was thinking of building a lowboy, but that is way into the future

OK, Here is some final advice from me. Obviously it's expensive regardless of what option you take in the Neo Geo collecting. If you search craigslist offen your bound to find a arcade cabinet for cheap. That is if you want to go in that direction.
I personally am happy with my setup and what I want to do. I collect ALL games and now that I have the multicart I feel very happy about my initial purchase of the Neo Geo system. I only had two games before hand. It's all in your hands what you want to do. I coudl tell you thou that Neo collector's are some of the most passionate and aggressive gamer's you'll ever meet. They know what they want and if they don't like something they'll make their voices heard. I read a few forums in regards to this multicart and some people love it others hate it. Most of the bash the cart without having played it. I have had nothing but fun with it. It game me a reason to bring my Neo system out of storage. Will I one day own a Neo cabinent....yes. When that time comes I'll snatch one up. But right now I am more then pleased with how I have my Neo Geo. If I see games I want for the system I'll still pursue them, so i am not saying that this cart is an end all for collecting on this system. The cart is what it is....100 games.

It's a good starting point if the games are in fact 100% accurate (straight ROM dumps vs. hacks), otherwise, its a $75 waste of money. I see no point in choosing real hardware over an emulator when the emulator is playing a 100% bit for bit ROM dump and the pirate cart is playing a hacked/incomplete/inaccurate game. Not saying your decision is wrong or anything, which I feel alot of people tend to get from these discussions: its not about right or wrong, its about throwing out opinions and having others challenge the basis of said opinion in hopes that a general consensus results.

The way I see it, the Neo Geo options go as follows:

(from best to worst, assuming arcade joystick with each)
1. Full size upright MVS (the more slots, the merrier)
2. MVS guts in a custom cabinet (sometimes you gotta make do)
3. AES
4. PS2 compilations
5. MAME
6. Dreamcast ports
7. Neo CD
8. Saturn ports
9. Playstation ports
11. Sega CD ports
12. Genesis ports
13. SNES ports
14. Wii Virtual Console

now some will bitch about me putting the Neo CD so low, I would put it under the AES if the load times weren't so god awful, but they are awful, so down the list it goes. I put Wii Virtual Console at the bottom because its essentially an inferior $9 version of what you can do for free in MAME with no hard copy to prove ownership should tragedy befall the wii. Also, you have to play it with some of the worst D-pads ever known to man.

And if anyone disputes the Neo CD thing, whatever:



FWIW, the Sega CD version of Samurai Shodown (which I own) loads about 20~25X faster than the Neo CD version and all that's really missing is the scaling (which I don't miss at all, in fact, I prefer the Sega CD version because of that fact).

Well, I agree with you to some extent. The CD is definitely NOT worth it if you want to play fighters (2-3 minutes loading time for a 30-60 second match -- no thanks). The CD isn't bad at all if you want to play shooters, side scrollers and beat em' ups, the load times are much easier to handle since you might see a load screen every 3-5 minutes (depending on the legth of the stages).

Thanks for the comments, everything on the cabinet is original, manufactured in 1991. It was in service at the local arcade until it closed up in 2005. Last year I had to recap the Wells-Gardner monitor, but other than that no problems. The 4 slot does have some weird compatibilty problems with certain game combinations. For example King of Figthers will only play in slot #3, and NAM-1975 only works in slot 1 (this is a problem on 4 or 6 slot motherboards).

Don't you think there is a reason it loads 20~25X faster? Do you honestly think the only thing the game is missing is scaling? The colors, the details of the background, the depth of the background. EVERY SNK port on the Genesis looks completely washed out.


I don't care if I'm the odd man out here...I love my Neo Geo CD...the only fighters I have for it are:

Samurai Shodown II
Fatal Fury 3

and Samurai Shodown II especially is pretty decent and completely worth the loading times.

But as I've said before my Neo Geo fulfills my ultimate shooter desires...and some of the hack 'n slashes are AWESOME!

I really hate that LOUD warning alarm in Samurai Shodown.

Also, I find most SNK fighters extremely overrated.

Well no shit that's not the only thing missing, but I can do without the little flag guy and a few other minor details here and there. What matters is that the gameplay is solid (very solid) and the music is awesome.

Yeah, that alarm SUCKS.

SNK fighters are the most hit and miss games on the planet. I don't know how they managed to make some of the most laughably bad and best of the best fighters at the same time.

World Heroes: sucks, what a total broken shit pile

Art of Fighting: ditto

Fatal Fury: one of the best fighting games I've ever played (especially 3 and onward). Multiple planes (again, 3 and onward), a good variety of characters, good animation, a solid move list, not very many super cheap moves/combos (Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 makes me want to vomit), great music and cool backgrounds, just freakin awesome. Many consider Mark of the Wolves to be the best fighting game ever (though I would still prefer 3 or a Real Bout game). As much as I love Street Fighter II Turbo/Hyper Fighting/Special Championship Edition, I think the later Fatal Fury games beat it at its own game, per se. Oh, and SF III and IV suck, what a bunch of overrated crap.

Samurai Shodown: almost as good as Fatal Fury, but the slowodown hurts it and the gameplay overall feels a little too much like chess rather than an intense battle

King of Fighters: I almost want to call it Fatal Fury: Tournament Edition, because that's what it feels like. Its basically just Fatal Fury with characters from other SNK series and it forces you to be competent with at least 3 characters. My biggest complaint is that they named them "94, 95, 96...." and it makes them have that "98 exists, why should I play 95?" feel like Madden games or some other sports games. When will game makers learn to stop putting year designations after their titles?

I've come to prefer SNK fighters (the good ones: SS, FF, KOF) over Capcom's post ~93 garbage as they maintain the purity of the genre: a few special moves, but the player's ability to quickly react to the other player is where the real talent is required. All of the new Capcom games are full of stupid million hit combos so the people that win are the people that sit at home all day practicing setting up the pre-determined combos and then just sit and wait until they can execute it. Even the later Fatal Furies employ more of that combo bullshit than I would like, but no where near Capcom's complete nonsense gameplay.
