Well these are good "for master system", and maybe some good competition for C64. If you start comparing it to nes though, then it is still rather laughable :)
I picked those games not so much because of arpeggio but because of their much improved drums, echo effects and c64-ish worbly bass sounds. I do like arps though, when they're used right (ie not in the lead instrument).

Yeah The Master System is pretty well known for it's lacklustre sound chip, me and Alianger were only listing the best Master System examples out there not comparing them with the best the NES has to offer which is usually greater due to the hardware

The C64 custom sid chip completely obliterates the NES sound chip, there is absolutely no competition at all between the two in this respect.

I have not tried the PC-Engine/Turbo Graphics yet except for the Bomerman game on the Wii VC, but it seems like a cool console. Too bad it did not get much recognition in the Western countries. :(

I never knew there was a PSG on the Genesis until about 2004. It did describe the 8-bit sounding sound effects, and I do agree it does enhance the sound on the Genesis.

I also agree that arpeggios are overrated. They do sound good sometimes, but it mostly turns chiptunes into "phonetunes" ;) I rarely heard a C64 tune, so I cannot judge its sound, but the NES and Gameboy have some of the best PSG's I heared, especially with the Mega Man songs.

Of course, you're referring to the Master System out side of Japan. They got FM with the YM2413 in theirs. (and could even had an add on for the Sega Mark III) Although I havent seen any games on the SMS that uses both the 2413 and the PSG. (was it all or nothing in this case?)

Definitely, the C64 even had some limited capabilities for digitized sound samples. (granted you could force these on the NES or SMS, but they were very poor)
Most of the Codemasters games on the NES sound very close to C64 quality music, though they seem to use most of the NES's sound resourses, with very limited sound effects. (kind of like Doom on the SNES, which seems to have only used 1 channel for effects)

That very first note/sound annoys the hell out of me beyond any describable degree and they use it over and over and over and over and over and over and over in that tune! I'll take Mega Man 2 on the NES any day over this! Same with Blaster Master and many, many others. I'll even take the PSG version of Wonder Boy 3 on the SMS as well as Space Harrier!

Also, the Last Ninja. Why must so much of the screen be taken up by a giant border and the ninja's face?

Yes, the C64 R-Type music is awsome! A whole lot like Codemasters' stuff too.

From what I understand the Master System came out in Japan and then immediately died, they seem to have gotten even fewer games released over there than the US did so it seems that Sega were pretty much creating their MS games solely for the European market by the late 80s, there was little point in using features specific to the Japanese consoles with this in mind.

Too bad that intro music has nothing to do with R-Type and was just made for the C64 version (it doesn't even fit the ambiance of the game). A lot of C64 games are like that, original music with absolutely nothing to do with the game. Were Japanese melodies outlawed in Europe or something?

Anyway, with the exception of the great drums, I like how the PSG SMS version sounds much better. Way too much arpeggio in the C64 version.

I just wished they'd scrapped the rest of the soundtrack and made up their own music for the rest of the game because every other tune in that game pales in comparison.

There was no menu music before so they added that tune in, the whole rest of the game unfortunately has the correct arcade music, which is why the other shooter made by the same people, Katakis absolutely kicks the sh#t out of the R-Type soundtrack from start to finish.

Does anyone have a link to the second stage music for C64 R-Type?

There is title screen music in R-Type, but for some reason I've never heard any home version use it. The SMS version has it in the sound test. It isn't tremendously complex like the new music, though. R-Type is not a "high energy" shooter like Thunderforce and doesn't need that kind of energetic music. It'd be like playing Resident Evil 4 with Billy Joel in the background. Just wouldn't fit.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl" playing during the battles in RE4 would be hilarious for some reason.
