I like Truxton's music, and Adventures of Batman and Robin's.
I lived on Truxton Dr...everyone on the street got a free copy of the game.
General rule:
Shmups have good music.
Platformers have bad music. (Exception = Sonic games.)
Lately I have been listening to toejam n earl 2 and battle mania vintage. I love the music screen in battle mania 2, they have little band guys playing the music, the drummer and the guitars rock out really hard its hilarious.
Currently, my favorite Gen/MD tunes are from Verytex (stages 1 & 2 BGMs especially). What hurts this game even more (besides the banal gameplay) is that this game doesn't even have a sound test or option menu to listen to these sweet tunes.
More exceptions : Ristar and SocketQuote:

It's one of my favorites! Another game without a sound test in the options menu...Quote:

1.Sonic Games
2.Toejam and Earl
And there you have it.
The problem with Altered Beast's music is that the backing beat cuts out whenever a sound effect plays.
I can't believe Sword of Vermilion has only been mentioned once in this thread. It's got some of the best music of any Genesis game, IMHO.
'Last City' is my absolute favorite track. The ending tune is great too.
