right here...
Here too! I love me some Genesis RPGs and am now delving into the ones that were left in Japan. I've been playing King Colossus, and just recently started Barver Battle Saga (the game everyone says is Breath of Fire but isn't).
I'd also like to try Blue Almanac and Surging Aura, but the language barrier always knocks me on my ass.
Yeah the Genesis was a great console for RPG's no matter what propaganda is spread about. Unfortunately when games sucked on it the sucked hard. Sega CD has got to be the best though. I can't think of a single game that was even mediocre on that one.
The only Sega CD I didn't really like was Vay, and that was because of its brutal random battles.
Step and fight, step and fight, step and fight.
AGHK! :furious:
It was a really cool game, but the healing system and those darn random battles just ruined it for me.
Heh, I still liked Vay but I can see how that would drive some people insane. Although I did manage to once get 5 steps forward without a battle occurring. I'd also give the Saturn a high RPG score because it had quite a few good ones and SF3 which has to be the best RPG in existence.
I think the only RPG I ever found myself wanting to play was Shenmue. Every single other NPC grinding, level-upping, 'do this retarded side quest for me plz kthx', magick and fantasie spirits-of-the-netherworld game just felt like a slugfest to get through. Zelda, Phantasy Star, Shining Force, all of them. Shenmue felt real.
I always considered Shenmue to be more of an adventure game but I guess it's an RPG as well.
I've never gotten into many RPG's myself. Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy III on the SNES is are the only ones I actually sat down and played through and I nearly beat Grandia II on the Dreamcast but I just got sick of it near the end. I dabbled a little bit with Diablo and Phatasy Star Online but only because they were more action oriented and you can't beat free online play. I went and tried Phatasy Star IV once and I've been meaning to give it another shot but it really did't grab my attention. Action RPG's like Zelda I can handle, turn based RPG's were never my cup of tea as a lot of the stories just seemed cliche to me and I could never force myself to care about the characters like I did in other story driven games like the Wing Commander series.
If I were an RPG gamer like most of my friends I'd probaly have gone off and got an SNES with them and I'd be at one of the numerous SNES communities singing the praises of that system instead but I was an arcade/action gamer, not an RPG gamer and for that, the Genesis was king and I suppose that's the reason I ended up with a Genesis back in the 16-bit days. *Disclaimer* I'm not saying that the SNES RPG's were better I've just noticed the major divide between a lot of Genesis and SNES fans is usually Action and RPG.
Shenmue is definitely an RPG though not a typical one, that's for sure. I always loved RPGs on the Master System, Genesis and Saturn. For some reason I just COULD NOT for the life of me get into any RPGs on Nintendo or Sony game systems. I don't know what it was. I'd always get bored really quickly.
I used to love RPGs.. not into them as much now. Played a lot of them on Turbografx, Genesis, SNES, Saturn, and Playstation. A bit on NES and DC too. I don't really like many newer RPGs.
I miss true Action RPGs. Diablo-style hack 'n slash games are not what I'm talking about. I mean Beyond Oasis, Landstalker, Crusader of Centy, Light Crusader...those sorts of platforming/enemy slaying/item grabbing/world saving/warm fuzzies inducing games.
I'm a big rpg fan. I don't have any of the new systems so I haven't played any of the newer rpgs after playstation.
After playing Fallout 2 I could never go back to the old, japanese-style RPGs. They are much too stale and restricting to ever be able to compare with a such a roleplaying experience.
I do enjoy a good RPG, but I prefer action titles like Rocket Knight and Turrican.
But I have been binging 'Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne' once again.
Ys VI. Get it, play it, love it.Quote:
