SNES

The RPG department really is even. I like the Genesis RPG's more, but that doesn't mean that the SNES doesn't have good ones either. The Genesis has the aforementioned Phantasy Star's, Lunar's, and Shining Force's in addition to Warsong, Beyond Oasis, Crucader of Centy, Dark Wizard, Popful Mail, Vay and a few others I'm probably forgetting.

The SNES had a bunch of RPG's, but most of them did not actually appeal to me. Even ones that I liked, Ogre Battle for example, tended to depend too much so on level grinding.

Phantasy Star, Shining Force and Warsong also depend on level grinding, and sometimes you just gotta know beforehand what characters to pick. Have you mentioned that? The overall quality of games might be nearly equal, but there's just a whole lot more of the good stuff on the SNES, especially including japanese games and their fan translations..

Mario vs. Sonic - Is this SNES Mario only or the entire series? I choose Mario either way, if only because of Yoshi's Island. But I think the gameplay of these series are too different to compare.. Mario has huge worlds (from 3 onwards) with secret passages and levels while Sonic has great bonus games, super sonic and characters that play differently (SMB2 did that, but it wasn't really a Mario game). Sonic 3 was more like the explorative levels in Mario, but it got tedious when nearly every level was like that.

Contra III vs. Contra Hard Corps. - I prefer the level based gameplay in Contra III, but alternate paths and tiny robots with double jumps are great. I dunno, it's an overrated series in my opinion so I don't really care.

Not nearly to the same extent. Shining Force and Phantasy Star are perfectly beatable without level grinding, something that games like Lufia and Ogre Battle are not. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of good RPG's on the SNES, but I didn't like most of them nearly as much.

I forgaot one of my favorite RPGs ever, Earthbound.

Yup that one is nice,Sonic 1 was not that good bit speed no spin dash to many obstakles for for an fun and run game the water levels are highly irritating the levels look bit uninspired not bad but not best sonic 2 was ways more like it and sonic 3/knuckles where fun untill you finished them both 100% then theyre going to collect dust and the graphics could have been done bit better at that time,mario 1 great 2 great 3 great world okay world 2 crap RPG fun Mario 64 good and more.

I love genesis and Snes....But i would def go with the Snes, just a better system overall. It fills all requirements for a great 16 bit system-great graphics, great sound, and awsome library of games. Its simply a fact that Snes is just a much better beast.

You need to do quite some leveling to beat Phantasy Star 2 or Warriors of the Eternal Sun I think. In the end it´s all a matter of taste. Personally I miss characters with a real personality of their own in most Genny RPGs I´ve played. They tend to be more defined by their skills and attributes, and that results in a weaker storyline where characters are not really involved. Exceptions of this are PS 4, Shining Force and Lunar. But still none of these games´ characters have the charm of the casts of FF 6, Chrono Trigger, Breath of Fire 2, Dragon Quest 6 or Star Ocean. I´d say most Genny RPGs are a bit more oldschool than the SNES games, making them less addictive. PS 4 for example is quite good, but it has flaws like the very standard battle system and the way all characters learn their skills just by leveling up, with no freedom of character developement at all.

This is a website dedicated to the Genesis after all, so it was to be expected to meet fans of every aspect of the Genesis´library here. But still I think for most players who are not dedicated Sega-fans the SNES RPGs with all their unique ideas and features are more attractive.:lawl: I think people remember them much better for a good reason...the fun they were to play.

Actually I didn't like Warrior's of the Eternal Sun either. Just to prove I'm not console exclusive. I think it's going a bit far to say that all the Genesis RPG's are lacking in storyline compared to the SNES. Because it's simply not true. Most of the so-called 'storyless' games just leave certain portions of the game open to speculation. Which isn't a bad thing at all. And the SNES RPG's, for the most part, weren't hugely more customizable than the Genesis ones. As you say we won't change each other's minds and it is a matter of taste.

And never once did I say that I didn't find the SNES RPG's to not be fun. I just generally thought that the Genesis ones were more fun. I loved Chrono Trigger and Zelda for example. Earthbound was pretty good though it was damn strange. And I did like Ogre Battle. And in the end we all remember games because they were fun to play. So that's a moot point.

I don't like these super pre-defined main characters in RPGs at all. It takes away the room for the actual roleplaying, which I think is one of the core definitions of the genre. Half of the point disappears when you have all the crucial events in the game decided for you, and they become more like adventure games with RPG elements.

Care to give an example of what you mean when you say super pre-defined?

Your typical FF-styled game where "your" character more or less acts on its own aside from map movement and battle commands. All you get are a few rare situations where you're presented with some extremly trivial yes/no questions.
