No, I mean games where your character's dialouge is completely automated (Unless the protagonist is completely void of personality ala Breath of Fire/Chrono Trigger) and the ability to interact and change the environment around you is completely out of your hands.

In the very old days, like FF1, your characters had no personality whatsoever, and that was fun because it forced you to use your imagination to give your guys some depth. The newer FFs provide a personality for your character, and that is fun in the same way you enjoy (hopefully) reading a book. The newest evolution in role-playing is pre-determined opportunities to do either good or evil ala KOTOR.Quote:

How can anything be passive and aggressive? I hate that image it reminds me of hippies.Quote:

I hate passive conversations like that. I like to play my games, not sit by and watch them. That's the whole point of video games after all, they're supposed to be interactive unlike books or movies. With choice-driven games like KOTOR or Baldur's Gate the dialouge becomes part of the gameplay itself, and adds a ton of replayability knowing that you could play through the game as a vanilla hero, a complete asshole or a pacifist diplomat.Quote:

What is this you ask?
The idea is to be different, to go against the establishment, and to never settle for what is out there, always want more, and don't stop until you get it. For all of you that were there, running around screaming the name sega, you know.
Sega gave us this lifestyle with their edgy marketing and of course, the Genesis...which starts in the begining there was darkness...then there was sega :p
RPG,s is not snes its strongest point to be fair, many of them are hell slow pace Chrono trigger as exception, and actually have those need effects but therefor world mapps levels have nop volume its quit empty and the same use of sprites over and over, snes and megadrive are both multiplatform consoles id rather play a DK country game or mario world then any RPG on snes but the RPG,s arent bad.this is more like a genesis vs snes battle:For whom the bell tolls.
I generally prefer characters like the modern FF-heroes. They don´t give you much freedom of choice, characters with a personality make the storyline more interesting, as they are involved, with their past experiences, love and hate etc.Quote:
Your typical FF-styled game where "your" character more or less acts on its own aside from map movement and battle commands. All you get are a few rare situations where you're presented with some extremly trivial yes/no questions.
The KOTOR way is nice too, but still the character is less connected to the main story. Even non-existent personalities can be fun, like in Morrowind, or if the main character does not have a background but the other party members are strongly involved with the story (like Suikoden).
I did not say all the Genesis RPGs are lacking in storyline. As I said, PS 4 and the Lunar games have good storylines. I said that the involvement of the characters´personalities was mostly smaller. Like mentioned in the other posts, it´s a different style of RPGs. I like pre-defined personalities cause it gives the characters something more than just their stats: I begin to like them (or hate them). This is something I miss in Phantasy Star 2 and 3 for example, along with a more flexible skill system and more exciting battles.Quote:
Actually I didn't like Warrior's of the Eternal Sun either. Just to prove I'm not console exclusive. I think it's going a bit far to say that all the Genesis RPG's are lacking in storyline compared to the SNES. Because it's simply not true. Most of the so-called 'storyless' games just leave certain portions of the game open to speculation. Which isn't a bad thing at all. And the SNES RPG's, for the most part, weren't hugely more customizable than the Genesis ones. As you say we won't change each other's minds and it is a matter of taste.
And never once did I say that I didn't find the SNES RPG's to not be fun. I just generally thought that the Genesis ones were more fun. I loved Chrono Trigger and Zelda for example. Earthbound was pretty good though it was damn strange. And I did like Ogre Battle. And in the end we all remember games because they were fun to play. So that's a moot point.
The SNES games I mentioned before just gave me that feel like whith a good book:"Just one more page! I wanna see what´s happening next!"
This feeling is what fewer Genesis games had to offer me than SNES games. And some of my favourite RPGs/Action-Adventures are Genesis-games nonetheless:
Lunar 1 & 2, Shining Force 1 & 2, Beggar Prince, Warsong and my most beloved Landstalker.
But my personal list of SNES-top RPGs/Adventures is longer: FF 4, 5, 6, Chrono Trigger, DQ 6, Star Ocean, Breath of Fire 2, Seiken Densetsu 3.
But I have to say that 4 of those games never saw an official release outside Japan, but I count them now because I have played them thanks to fan-translations.
Maybe if more Genesis-RPGs are translated (please Super Fighter Team!!!), such as Surging Aura or Langrisser 2 (completely!), my opinion will change, but for now my score is clear.
And, Weasel, let me remind you: You started this endless discussion of ours´anew after I just stated my personal SNES/Genesis strong points (like you did before).
You scare me with your fanticism :DQuote:

108 Stars, it wasn't aimed so much so at you as everyone else who was supporting the SNES RPG's whom I hadn't shouted at yet. Then you came up and I had to respond. It's my nature you know?
Anyway, as long as we shout at each other in a civilized fashion there's no problem.
There is always a healthy balance to achieve. We may not have seen something fully like it yet, but it's very possible. I think Baldur's Gate (Or its sequel, more specificly) comes pretty close as you have some backstory with strong ties to the main plot as opposed to being thrown in from nowhere like Elder Scrolls, and you have some character relations to start off with. How you go on from there is completely up to you.Quote:

Would you consider Ultima 4 new? Or Monkey Island? This predetermined "reading a book" style is typical in japanese RPGs, and even though it's beginning to evolve it will be a long time before FF has the same depth as a game like Planescape Torment. Perhaps it won't ever happen.Quote:

Both Genesis and Snes are great, but i love the Snes a bit more.
Great selection of Games for all catagories.
I can name about 50 personal Fav Snes games while i can only list 30 or so Fav Genesis games.
I only found a 70% version...Quote:
