Sega Ages: The Terminator Games

Everyone should have believed him when he said "I'll be back." Now, Terminator: Salvation has finally hit theaters, and this latest outing seeks to reinvigorize the franchise and kick off a new trilogy. We finally get to see John Conner kick some ass, but what about all the other times Skynet has mangled the time stream, and John was a either whiny little kid or just a faint glimmer in his momma's eye? There have been several game versions of the first two films on the Genesis and Sega CD, and staff writer Tom Briggs takes a look back at all of them in another installment of Sega Ages. So grab a phased plasma rifle in the 40 gigawatt range, and take on the machines!

Sweet article. Though personally, I find T2 Arcade is playable without a Menacer if you have a friend with you, taking the other side of the screen.

Nice read, I don't quite like the criticism of music in T1 MD and T2 Arcade, they're awesome IMO. T2 Arcade is quite playable with controller, I even beat it once :3

I do agree with T2 part, its quite a disapointment, particulary when you have played the NES T2 which IMO is really great.

Ugg, I absolutely hate it when people say something like "the sound was limited by the Genesis audio limitations".

Duh. Not only is that redundant but what the hell else is it supposed to sound like? The TurboGrafx? If you hate Genesis audio, just say it.

The sound was limited by poor/untalented music composers and programmers. Not by the hardware itself.

I noticed it was redundant right after I sent it to Ken. And then I revised the article, and resent it, but somehow skipped over that part :) I'm going to use the excuse that my brain is fried.

"Like Aladdin and Earthworm Jim, the game just feels perfect."

Did you play either of those recently? The "smooth feel" is really just sacrificing responsiveness for better animation, and making the scrolling so loose that you end up running into stuff because your character walks too close to the edge of the screen. Fortunately The Terminator (CD) doesn't have any of those flaws, but then again the sprite animations in that one are pretty bad.

Nice article overall though, I like how it discusses the gameplay and music more in-depth than the previous one about the Disney games.

The T2 platformer sucks very badly. You all know what I think of T2 Arcade and RvT and I believe the Genesis Terminator game is a good "reduction" of the Sega CD game, even though it may have came out first.

Aladdin and EWJ are two of my favorite games...ever! So I'm not going to budge on that point. Sorry :p

Why state something over the top like that when you can't even defend your claims? Terminator feels nothing like Aladdin to play.
I love the games too, they just aren't the best at everything they do.

Well I didn't say that the games all play the same. I stated that they all feel perfect, which in my opinion they do. The Terminator is also running on the same engine as Aladdin, though heavily modified. This is why I felt the comparison was a valid one :)

How can a game NOT be limited by hardware limitations? AFAIK, games can never pass limitations unless they use additional hardware (used in SNES games by chips for example). For some reason NES and Atari 2600 games are never limited in their sound department according to reviews I read/hear.

The music was certainly top notch... The Sega CD version of Terminator wasn't bad either.

When stating that the audio was limited by hardware limitations (hate typing that sentence again!) I was trying to build up to why the Sega CD version is the superior version. I didn't make that clear in the feature, though, so my apologies.

Agreed, although to be completly honest, I liked it better on the SNES. That's just me though.

Or clever coding? I believe a number of Genesis and Saturn games went beyond what the hardware could do this way (rotation, true transparencies, etc).

Lots of games have been moved from subscribers area to general public - look in the New Games folder for them

And for our subscribers we have added lots of new games to the subscribers area as well
