If this is the real reason why we're on the verge of download-only I just might boycott video games entirely.

The reason digital gaming is getting a push is because it costs far less to distribute games. If a game company can make pure profit off of a new game, why wouldn't they go that road? It is a business after all.
And game companies don't hate you. They're just looking to make a profit. As a collector, I don't like the idea of digital distribution only (I only like digital distribution as an alternative/convenience mean), but I get it.
Well look at it this way, moving to download only could make it incredibly easy to make an entire library of video games available to the public in one place, namely Playstation Network. Think of it, say a developer like Capcom or Sega uploads all of their PSP releases onto PSN, wouldn't it (at least in theory) cut out 2 middlemen (the retailer and the publisher)? I'm assuming though that Sony would take more of a percentage for sales since they are taking the place of the publisher in this case but the developers would still make more money, plus download only would make lost sales due to used sales/pirating non-existent.
Side effects of this are that if you wanted to get a game used to save a couple of bucks and it is download only, you either gotta pay full price or wait for a price drop. Also I imagine values of some rarer games will go down because someone could simply download the game off of PSN for not a penny over what it initially retailed for.
The real people that are going to get shafted in the near future I think here are not necessarily the gamers that need physical releases (we'll still get those for AT LEAST the rest of this generation for non PSP games), but the people who don't yet have high speed internet connections. Like MrMatthews theorized, Sony's move to download only titles might be a way to stunt/stop used game sales, and while they are taking it to the extreme, there is another idea being kicked around for combating used game sales that I think is more imminent. It's been going around that some developers are considering doing something to the effect of including a download voucher with a game when you buy it new, with the voucher unlocking the ending of the game. When someone sells the game and it is bought again as used, the ending is not available on disc, and must be purchased as DLC. People without access to Xbox Live or PSN will at that point be SOL if they want to buy used. I don't know of any title coming out that would actually implement this, but it certainly wouldn't be hard to do if people *really* wanted to cut some of their losses.
Of course I don't really want any of this to happen, but it seems like it's on the horizon.
I have nothing against Digital Distribution.
I paid for a dozen PSN PS1 classics, a ton of XBLA games,DLC, Virtual Console downloads, and even play world of warcraft.
What I DO have a problem with is their apparent need to introduce it halfway through a console's life-cycle by killing support for the main distribution medium.
I don't care if the PSP2 is backwards compatible, or doesn't have a UMD drive, the current PSP should have UMD support.
Gotta be honest, I was only impressed with two things in Microsoft's conference: Modern Warfare 2 (I'm addicted to the series, and the video/demo looked amazing), and Shadow Complex, a Metroid-esque action game for Xbox Live by Epic Games.
What really boggled my mind though was how they said the new games that used the camera as a controller would be the next big step for gaming. It's just a new Eye Toy essentially, and if I remember correctly the Eye Toy wasn't really anything special.
I thought the same thing.
I'm getting kind of tired of companies trying to reinvent the wheel. I have a Wii. I like it. I also really enjoy the traditional experiences I get on my 360 and PS3. But because the Wii has enjoyed success, we get non-stop attempts to match that. It's getting old fast.
And 360 Facebook and Twitter? I wanted to punch my own face for that.
Yea, it looks like a really really good eye toy, or at least one with a lot more support behind it. What does the eye toy do game-wise other than Lingering in the Shadows and Mesmerize? I've had mine almost a year and I think that's the furthest extent they ever pushed it.
If I had a 360 though the voice and facial recognition alone would sell me on it because I'm a tool like that. Everything else aside I would feel like a really stupid mime trying to play games with no form of controller whatsoever in my hands.:?
I think game companies are getting way too caught up in motion control. Which is odd, because I don't think it works too well. My favorite part of the Wii-Remote isn't the motion control, but rather the IR pointer. I don't get the fuss.
Hmmm 'Natal'
I will eat my hat if this works anywhere near as well as it looks in the trailer.
Here's an idea Microsoft. Instead of wasting countless millions on shit like this that no-one cares about, how about instead investing the money in making your console not break down every 5 minutes???
Looking forward to Saboteur, Modern Warfare 2, and I wanna see what the whole Madden online franchise thing is about
Good year from Microsoft, and finally Metal Gear rumors are over.
No it's not a rumor anymore Koyima stood on stage and said that Metal Gear Solid was coming to 360. I never said I thought it was a 360 exclusive, I know PS3 will probably also get Metal Gear Solid Rising.
