I'm bored and thought it would be interesting to see what most MD fans thought was the definitive alternative to Mario.
In my mind it's between Kid Chameleon which has the depth, length, variety and ideas to put it on par, and Castle of Illusion which has some amazingly timeless art direction to it's credit.
Hmm, I'd have to go with Castle of Illusion.
The best one is Doraemon, which is missing from the option list...
Kid Chameleon is a good one. Lots of different helmets that grant you different powers, jumping on enemies, and an insane number of levels. CoI is a great game, but KC offers considerably more in terms of longevity, and challenge.
Buster's Hidden Treasure feels more to me like a Sonic clone. I'd say Kid Chameleon, personally, but I've regretfully never played Castle of Illusion. I need to rectify that imo.

Kid Chameleon hands down!
I voted Kid Chameleon. one of the best games on the Genesis, it was tough choice between KC and Castle of Illusion but I thought KC felt more mario like.
Also I Agree w/ Jerry about Buster's Hidden Treasure. it doesn't feel like a mario alternative at all, just really good Sonic clone.

I do have Tiny Toons Adventures on NES, pretty fun game.
I got Animaniacs on Genesis and it too is fun, a little challenging though.

The closet for me is Kid Chameleon, I quite enjoy that game.
