I haven't even voted yet.
The only game I've even played on that list is Mickey Mouse, and I'm not sure I would really classify that as a "Mario" game for the Genesis/Mega Drive.
I guess any game that I would consider a suitable Mario counterpart would have to at least be more than 10 stages long, for one thing. Even the shortest Mario game had 20. It would also have to control really well.
Hmm. Not trying to beat a dead horse or anything, but I've only played one game that meets both of my requirements.
Jesus.Arnold, just out of curiousity, what are the qualities that you consider make a game comparable to Mario Bros?
You've only played Castle of Illusion?! jeez I would've thought you'd be more of an expert with the Genesis game library than that :(
Dunno really, I was mainly just picking games which have a very similar feel to Mario, games that are obvious close relatives.
I guess if I were forced into and actual criteria I would just say -
1. Jumping on Heads of Enemies
2. high emphasis on jumping over hazards
3. Similar pacing
Though really on top of those two elements many of the games I chose each have other similarities specific to them.
Kid Chameleon - obviously expands on the Raccoon/Tanooki/Frog suit ideas of Super Mario 3, includes blocks to head butt, Mario World style multiple exits
Marvel Land - Gliding ability power-up, similar style, multiple exits (this predates Mario World)
Rolo to the Rescue - Secrets that you have to find to gain access to different levels, Overworld map.
Decap Attack - Main jumping on heads attack with a power-up that allows you to throw projectiles.
well, check out my collection below. I think it's decent. :)
Ah yes I see, you've got some gems there and some real stinkers too, I can't really afford to keep anything I don't really like (money wise and space wise) so I buy a lot of games and end up selling a lot of games. So my 115 odd collection is all games I really like.
Well, I can get CIB games here locally for $2 a piece, so typically if I see one and it's not a sports game, I'll buy it. The ones I've bought off ebay were the ones I really wanted and probably constitute most of the "gems" you mentioned (Quackshot, Herzog Zwei, Dune II, Zombies Ate My Neighbors, Battletoads, Cool Spot, TMNT, Rocketknight Adventures, etc).
Did Decap Attack win yet? ............
Chuck D. Head....... Dr. Frank N. Stein <----Get it? Hilarious!
Yes, and such worlds as Tibuland & Abdomainland, if I recall. Comedy gold.
Now that I think of it James Pond should've been included on that poll.
I think it's better with Mega Drive exclusives, I mean it wouldn't be very good if the Mega Drive community voted an very inferior port from the Amiga as their best Mario alternative would it
and anyway James Pond is in Rolo to the Rescue so there is kinda' a James Pond game in the options ;)
